Fitbit Ace 3 Review: Kids Tracker for the Fitbit Family

"The Fitbit Ace 3 uses rewards and fun challenges to help children lead healthy lifestyles."

advantages

  • Easy to use

  • Comfortable fit in child size

  • Attractive, animated user interface

  • Fun, family challenges

disadvantage

  • The fastener can break

  • Works best with a parental Fitbit

Activity trackers are usually aimed at adults who want to get fit and stay fit. These trackers are designed for adults and have interfaces designed for adults rather than children. While they may not set the Fastest Known Times, kids can benefit from the health benefits of a fitness wearable.

Fitbit wants to reach these kids with its Ace 3 tracker, which has an animated user interface and a kid-friendly design. How does the Fitbit Ace 3 hold up to the demands of childhood? We tested it on a couple of elementary school children to find out.

Design: Small, but mostly robust

Although it's a kid's device, the Ace 3 isn't a problem. It has a triaxial accelerometer for step tracking and detailed sleep monitoring. There's even a heart rate monitor, but it's probably not turned on for privacy reasons. On the surface, it seems Fitbit has taken its adult tracker and reduced it for kids.

Fitbit Ace 3 is worn around a child's wrist with a hula hoop.

The touchscreen is small enough for a child's wrist, but not too small for a child's hand. My kids had no problem swiping or typing on the screen. The black and white display is big enough for kids to see their stats and bright enough to be seen from outside and inside. Unlike the Fitbit Ace 2, which is completely covered with silicone, the Ace 3 has recesses for the buttons so that they are easy to press.

The Ace 3 is reminiscent of Fitbit's early fitness trackers. It consists of a tiny fitness tracker unit that fits into a sturdy silicone strap. The bracelet is designed for smaller wrists with an easy-to-use standard watch clasp. My children, 8 and 10 years old, had no problem putting the band on and off themselves. It was comfortable to wear day and night and we had no problems with rashes. We took some preventive measures that minimized skin irritation. After a day outdoors, we took off the tracker and washed both my child's wrist area and the tracker.

A child playing tug of war while wearing Fitbit Ace 3.

While not as slim and slim as Fitbit's all-in-on trackers like the Charge 4, the Ace 3's modular design is perfect for kids who are electronics-prone. If the tape breaks, it's easy to replace. Simply pull out the tracker unit and place it on a new tape. Be prepared to replace the tape, especially if your child likes to take the tracker on and off. We broke one tie in our tests while the second stood the test of time.

Software: fun and kid-friendly interface

The user interface adheres to basic step counting and doesn't overwhelm your kids with advanced metrics like heart rate analysis or calorie consumption. It features a handful of fun watch faces that my kids loved. Our favorites were the animated ones that change with fitness stats. The missile, for example, was nearing launch as the step count neared its target. When they reached their target, the missile took off with a bang, much to the delight of my younger child. I found that the younger the child was, the more they enjoyed these animations.

The Fitbit Ace 3 harnesses rewards and fun challenges to help children lead healthy lifestyles.

Another feature we liked was the family competitions, where my kids could challenge family members and friends to do the most steps in a day. We often had to take an extra walk around the block to add that extra step count. The Fitbit Ace 3 judiciously uses more than one strategy to encourage your children to exercise, as not every child is motivated in the same way. My younger child enjoyed the rewarding animations, while my older child seemed more motivated by this competition than just achieving their goal.

Performance: Viewing fitness stats can be annoying

The Fitbit Ace 3 is a kid's device and, as such, has a parental component that you need to navigate through. Almost everything is done through the parent's Fitbit account under the My Family tab in the Fitbit app. How you view your child's daily fitness stats depends on whether or not they have their own mobile device. For older children, you can install the Fitbit app on the child's device and they can keep track of their stats for themselves. It's a little harder to see the stats with your younger kids.

Younger children who don't have a mobile device need to use the Fitbit app on their parent's phone or tablet to view their daily stats. You can switch between two views – the parent's view with their tracker information and a child's view with data from the child's tracker. This kids view is simplified so your kids can easily track their progress without being overwhelmed with too many numbers.

A girl holding onto a skateboard while wearing Fitbit Ace 3.

My kids looked forward to checking their stats on my iPhone several times a day and changing their watch faces frequently. Unfortunately, it was a pain to switch between the child's and the parent's views. Every time you return to the parent view, you will have to enter your password. I couldn't use a fingerprint or facial recognition for this authentication step, so I had to enter my randomly generated, 12-digit string. It was so annoying that I changed my Fitbit password to a shorter and easier to remember one, which is likely to compromise the security of my account for convenience.

Our opinion

The Fitbit Ace 3 takes the best features of its successful fitness tracker line and bundles them in a tracker that was developed exclusively for children. The Ace 3 has a vibrant user interface that encourages kids to exercise. It is especially effective for elementary school children who get caught up in animation and family-friendly competitions. Older kids, like the fast growing tweens, may find this tracker too childish.

Is there a better alternative?

The main competitor of the Fitbit Ace 3 is Garmin's Vivofit Jr. 2, which offers a similar playful user interface. Both are very powerful trackers for kids, so your choices should be made based on the platform. If you already own a Fitbit, or are planning on buying a Fitbit, then the Ace 3 should be your first choice. It integrates seamlessly with the Fitbit app and enables communication with and control of the child's device. Likewise, those with a Garmin device should stick with the Garmin ecosystem and get a Vivofit Jr.

How long it will take?

The Fitbit Ace 3 will last a few years, depending on your child's age and activity level. Your child can grow out of the device before it breaks. The weak point is the closure of the tape, which is made of plastic. However, since the tracker can be detached from the tape, you can easily replace the tape if it breaks. Fortunately, Fitbit offers a one-year limited warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use.

Should you buy it?

If you're looking for a new fitness tracker for your kids, the Fitbit Ace 3 should be at the top of your list. It has a comfortable fit and a fun user interface that will keep your child moving all day. If you already own the Fitbit Ace 2 or a competing kid tracker, there's no need to upgrade. The Ace 3 primarily offers an improved user interface that is not a compelling reason to upgrade.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Review: No Objections

A character points a finger in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles – Nintendo Switch

RRP $ 40.00

"The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a must for fans of the series and anyone interested in visual novels."

advantages

  • Great writing

  • Dynamic new characters

  • Excellent new mechanic mechanic

  • Fresh identity

  • Strong writing

disadvantage

  • Some legal proceedings drag on

  • Sometimes too familiar

When it comes to visual novels, Capcom's Ace Attorney range is superior to the rest. The series started with the first entry, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on the Gameboy Advance. Its popularity has ushered it into a new age, and after being a Japanese exclusive for six years, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles series has finally made its way west.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles bundles the two titles of the prequel spin-off series. These games take everything that made previous entries so great and mix them up with a new time and place – late 19th century Meiji-era Japan and Victorian Britain. This archaic setting offers new avenues for solving legal proceedings and new barriers for returning fans of the series eager to pass judgment.

While the first game in this duology sometimes felt almost too familiar and others even felt a little unfulfilled (since this is a special Ace Attorney title where the story is not stand-alone and is expanded further in 2), both titles can be played back back solves this problem. The range of packages and great additions to the series make the long wait for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles worthwhile.

Memorable characters

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles begins on very familiar territory and evolves into a unique story that receives an identity that sets it apart from the modern day stories of the Mainline Ace Attorney series. For certain fans, this breakup can feel like a burden as the first title is almost too similar to the previous episodes. Thankfully, the amazing characters and charming writing keep things interesting. I found myself very invested in where it was going next.

The first entry begins in Japan with Phoenix Wright's ancestor and protagonist Ryunosuke Naruhodo, who died after his alleged murder of university professor Dr. John H. Wilson is on trial. In this first trial, Ryunosuke's best friend, who is a law student, Kazuma Asogi, represents him in court.

The Great Ace Attorney, Herlock Sholmes, holding his hat.

After Ryunosuke's innocence is proven and his judicial awakening, the two travel to the UK, where Asogi will graduate and make his debut in court. This trip ushers in a series of events that push Ryunosuke further into his legal calling with his new partner Susato Mikotoba and the English detective Herlock Sholmes at his side.

These characters and their interactions really make this spin-off so valuable. They all feel unique and can even rival the charms of older characters in the main entries. I fell in love with Asogi straight away, as I expect many will. He and Ryunosuke's dynamic in the courtroom quickly made them my favorite duo on the show.

These characters and their interactions really make this spin-off so valuable.

As with every game in the series, there will be various lawsuits throughout the story and players will uncover more secrets that appear along the way. As far as I can speak of the story. The narrative twists and turns are what make Ace Attorney so special. So the fewer players who know how to get in, the better.

Detect better

As with previous games in the series, gameplay is the typical investigative and experimental formula. However, certain twists have been introduced to better reflect the period, with the tests seeing the most noticeable changes.

The Great Ace Attorney, trigger completion screen.

The new mechanic of the dance of deduction is a remarkable addition. Whenever Herlock Sholmes begins putting the facts and arguments together, it is up to Ryunosuke to point out the contradictions in his quick bursts of logic. To do this, players must carefully look at all of their evidence. This literally means that said evidence is turned upside down to find clues Herlock may have overlooked, which may lead to a different conclusion.

The test segments now differ significantly from the main series. You're a little closer to the witch trials in the crossover title Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. Players will still face the series' usual penal system while harassing a witness and producing evidence to find inconsistencies in testimony, but players may have to cross-examine multiple witnesses at the same time this time around. Another mechanism straight out of the Professor Layton crossover is the ability to interrupt a witness's dialogue in order to conduct further investigation and get closer to the desired truth and judgment.

Once the players reach the English court system, another twist is made predominant with the addition of jurors who work with the judge to decide a final verdict. Throughout the trial, these jurors can change their minds based on how they think about the case at hand, each with their own thoughts. Players will reach out to the jury and can even use the testimony of one judge to find a contradiction in someone else's testimony.

A great new feature in the courtroom is the summation check. The new mechanic shows up whenever the jury agrees on a guilty verdict. If it happens, players can ask for a summation and try to dissuade the jury from their guilty vote.

These fresh gimmicks have made these two spin-offs my favorites on the series.

The jurors of the Great Ace Attorney.

All of this appeal makes it clear that this court system is nothing like what veterans of Ace Attorney have ever played. As in Professor Layton's crossover, the court is much more archaic. Players will not use technology or surefire evidence to reach a desired judgment, but will have to come up with logical explanations while finding flaws in those of others in order to succeed.

These fresh gimmicks have made these two spin-offs my favorites on the series. They make the games so unique and more dynamic than ever. Trust me when I say your first moment with Sholmes ‘Conclusions will change your life. These new mechanics are brilliant and I hope they return in some form or another with the next main series entry.

A little too familiar

While the games offer a lot of new ideas, the first game has some familiarity issues. This first half of the Chronicles story feels a lot like the plot of the original Phoenix Wright trilogy, which sometimes left me disinterested other than how the characters interact and grow. It quickly became clear that this first entry was mostly just a setup to lead into the more unique sequel.

The slow pace of this first half was further fueled by a series of legal proceedings that felt they were taking too long. Although I enjoyed it, starting with the first case, I thought, “Wow, are we going with this case?” I feel like this is a by-product of the environment the title is placed in, and this one Spin-off was originally very experimental.

A character points a finger in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

The environment itself is another weak point in the first entry. The Great Ace Attorney doesn't really take advantage of the setting and its limits. There were points at which I felt the same things could have been accomplished with another modern day ace attorney instead of going the 19th century path.

It quickly became clear that this first entry was mostly just a setup to lead into the more unique sequel.

Certain highlights, new mechanics and the superior sequel complete the package. The second game improves on the first in almost every way, including the use of the settings – although some of the game's modern technology tools feel like a cheat.

I found The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles more than worthy of the long running series, with both games quickly becoming two of my favorite posts. It can be a bit of a chore at first, but this spin-off quickly finds its own unique voice and takes full advantage of its individuality.

Our opinion

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a must have for fans of the Ace Attorney franchise and the visual novel genre at large. It's a perfect entry point for anyone interested in the genre or series. Although it has some slow points, strong writing and charming characters are enough to make up for its weaknesses. Thanks to those strengths and the very fun new mechanic, I wanted more.

How long it will take?

Since both titles run for around 30 hours each, the entire package should take around 60 hours. However, due to the nature of visual novels, there isn't much replayability.

Is there an alternative?

Some players who want a darker and more active gaming experience can enjoy the popular Danganronpa range. It's one that I would highly recommend investing your time in after you've enjoyed your time with an Ace attorney, and vice versa.

Should you buy it?

Yes. This double pack is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a good visual novel to empathize with.

Motorola One 5G Ace Review: Battery Life, Specs, Cameras

motorola one 5g ace review 1

“You get good performance, great battery life, and a nice big display. But below-average cameras and a short software life have harmed the One 5G Ace. "

  • Modern design

  • Excellent battery life

  • Solid display

  • Good performance

  • Below average camera for the money

  • Only one software update guaranteed

Motorola recently unveiled the Moto G-Series 2021, which is solid value for money for those looking to spend no more than $ 250. In addition to the Moto G, the company has also launched a new model in its high-end One line: the Motorola One 5G Ace.

At first glance, the Motorola One 5G Ace is a bit confusing (and an awkward name), but it's important not to think of it as a replacement for last year's Motorola One 5G. This device has a lower-priced processor, a poorer display, and other cutbacks – but it costs $ 400 or $ 150 less than the standard Motorola One 5G.

However, there is no lack of competition in this price range. Does the Motorola One 5G Ace compete with the Pixel 4a and iPhone SE among its competitors? We put it to the test to find out.

Design and display

Motorola has done well at offering relatively modern looking phones for the price, and the One 5G Ace is no exception to that rule. It's a large phone with a large 6.7-inch display with an aspect ratio of 20: 9 that is great for scrolling through Twitter, seeing all of your email at a glance, and seeing more anytime. Of course, there's a tradeoff: don't expect to be able to reach the top of the display without the help of a second hand.

While the original One 5G had a double front camera, the Ace has a single centered cutout for the selfie camera. And there's a tiny chin at the bottom of the display, although it's not too intrusive and you probably won't notice it at all in everyday use.

At first glance, the back of the phone looks metallic, but you won't be fooled for long. It feels like plastic. Well, that's not a big deal for the price – it doesn't feel as high-end as a glass or metal device, and its weight helps make it feel solid. Plastic makes the phone more durable against typical bumps and scratches, which is usually a solid selling point for those buying a device on a budget. On the back there is also a fingerprint sensor, which works relatively quickly and accurately, and a camera module with three sensors.

In addition to the standard power switch, volume rocker, and USB-C port on the edges, you also get a headphone jack. It's nice that Motorola has stuck to the headphone jack on its budget phones for so long.

Thanks to its higher resolution of 1080p, the display is a clear step forward over the Moto G series. Unfortunately, you don't get the 90Hz refresh rate that you get with the standard Motorola One 5G, but it still has decently vivid colors and gets relatively bright. It's a good looking display for a phone in this price range.

Power and battery

Under the hood, the Motorola One 5G Ace is a clear step up from any Moto G device thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor, 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB or 128 GB of storage. It's a solid setup, and the Qualcomm 7 series has proven to be a great way to get good performance over the past year without buying a flagship phone.

The phone is more than capable in everyday use. There were seldom problems even when used for heavy-duty multitasking, mobile gaming, and more. I have the 6GB RAM model and have never had issues with apps closing in the background before I was done with them. It even handled some Call of Duty: Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends with ease. Sure, load times can be a little longer than the Snapdragon 765G-equipped Motorola One 5G, and it may slow down sooner, but in normal use they feel almost identical at this point.

The phone has a 5,000 mAh battery (yes, just like a Galaxy S21 Ultra) which is more than enough for a full day of heavy use. Although it doesn't last quite as long as the Moto G Power, most people can still work with it for two days due to the higher resolution display, as Motorola announced. If you can charge your phone well every day, no need to worry here. Unfortunately there is no wireless charging, which is a bit disappointing. It's still tolerable that a $ 400 phone doesn't offer it, but it won't be long – and it would have been nice if the One 5G Ace had been ahead of the curve.

Cameras

As mentioned earlier, the Motorola One 5G Ace has a triple camera system with a 48-megapixel main sensor with a f / 1.7 aperture lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera with a f / 2.2 aperture and a 2 megapixel macro camera. I still don't think people really use macro lenses (more than just to check them out), but Motorola disagrees, arguing that in the era of COVID-19, more people than ever are taking photos of things up close At home. I would have preferred a telephoto to a macro.

The One 5G Ace's camera is fine, but not much better than fine. In good lighting conditions, a solid shot can be obtained even though the colors are not very vivid and the details are not as sharp as they could be.

The pictures are far worse in poor lighting conditions. There's little detail and a lot of noise – when you can actually lock the focus and even get a blurry picture. Highlights are often overblown, which is often the case with low-end phones in poor lighting conditions. So while you can tell what you photograph most of the time, don't expect much more.

The same is more or less true of the front of the phone. The 16-megapixel front camera can take fine selfies, but nothing will fake someone like you have a high-end phone.

The Motorola One 5G Ace's main problem in the camera department has more to do with competition than anything else. The fact is that great phone cameras are getting cheaper and cheaper and this fee is charged by Google. The Pixel 4a costs $ 50 less, but it offers a camera that is an order of magnitude better than that of the One 5G Ace. When you're ready to make the move to iOS, the iPhone SE has a better camera too – although it's not as good as the Pixel 4a. After all, the OnePlus Nord may not have the best camera, but it's still better than the One 5G Ace's.

Software and functions

Motorola has been offering near-production software for its phones for years, and the Motorola One 5G Ace is no exception to that rule. The software is pared down, easy to navigate, and well designed.

Motorola's My UX also offers a number of additional features and gestures that can be turned on or off at will that can help make using the device more natural. Things like pressing three fingers down to take a screenshot, rotating your wrist to jump to the camera, and a lot more are useful.

There are also mobile game settings that can be customized. My favorite thing with all of these features is that they are all included in the Moto app and not distributed via Android like other manufacturers do. That said, if you don't want to use or see it, you can hide the Moto app and essentially use the phone as your standard Android device.

Motorola's commitment to software updates is incredibly weak.

Well, almost a standard Android device. While other standard Android phones like the Pixel series update quickly for at least a few years, the Motorola One 5G Ace does not. It ships with the already dated Android 10 (Android 11 has been out of stock for months), and although Motorola has announced it will bring Android 11 to the Ace, it hasn't specified exactly when. And that will likely be it for the phone. Motorola has promised "at least one" OS update, but I wouldn't expect more than one – the track record in this department is poor. Fortunately, you will receive security updates for two years.

It's really disappointing to see old software paired with missing updates. With a $ 150 Moto G game this is more acceptable, but at $ 400 it's hard to deal with and we really hope that Motorola will improve their game in the near future.

Price and availability

As mentioned earlier, the Motorola One 5G Ace is priced at $ 400 available now from Amazon. In the US, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage are provided.

Our opinion

The Motorola One 5G Ace is a solid phone. It works well, has a nice display, and great battery life. But in 2021, phones under $ 500 have to go a step further – and it just doesn't. The advantages of the Pixel 4a are years of software updates and a camera in flagship quality. The iPhone SE offers flagship performance and even longer updates. The Motorola One 5G Ace, on the other hand, is “good” in just about everything, but “great” in almost nothing – expect a battery.

Of course, we didn't really mention the "5G" aspect of this phone, but there's not much to talk about there. I would warn against buying this phone because of its 5G support. Get the Pixel 4a instead, fix the lack of 5G, and when you're ready for your next phone, getting something that is 5G capable is more important. Alternatively, you can get the Pixel 4a 5G, which has an even better camera and improved performance for $ 60 more.

Is there a better alternative?

Yes. If $ 400 is a hard limit on your budget, then you can save $ 50 and get the best Google Pixel 4a. If you can just stretch a little and are interested in 5G and prefer a large display, then go for this Google Pixel 4a 5G instead.

How long it will take?

The Motorola One 5G Ace has a plastic back, so it should withstand most drops. However, it's not waterproof, so you'll want to stay away from the wet. Given the lack of software updates after Android 11, the features may be out of date within a few years – but this hardly prevents them from actually working.

Should you buy it?

No, go for that either Google Pixel 4a or the Pixel 4a 5G instead.
