Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: It’s Finally Fixed!

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4

"Microsoft's Surface Laptop 4 is by far the best in the range thanks to the huge performance improvements."

  • AMD chips are widely used in configurations

  • Thinnest 15-inch laptop

  • Excellent workmanship

  • Great typing experience

  • Long lasting battery life

  • Older AMD chips will degrade performance

  • Thick bezels, bad webcam

Well, Microsoft did it. It finally fixed the Surface Laptop 4.

The previous model was plagued by poor performance and a lack of solid configurations to choose from. This was difficult to recommend, especially for the 15-inch model.

With the Surface Laptop 4, Microsoft fixed these issues, thanks in part to the incredible performance and battery life of some new AMD processors. I looked at the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4, which had an eight-core Ryzen 7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. That added up to $ 1,800, which ultimately feels like a reasonable price for what the Surface Laptop 4 has to offer.

design

There are a lot of things to love about the design of the Surface Laptop – even in 2021. All of these things are still intact on the Surface Laptop 4, which means that the case remains relatively unchanged.

At just 0.58 inches for the 15-inch model, it's still remarkably thin than ever. This thinness is really noticeable in the palm rests, which are barely lifted from the table. This is especially true if you are used to thicker laptops in this category, e.g. E.g. the Dell XPS 15 (0.71 inch thick) or the MacBook Pro 16 inch (0.64 inch thick).

Of course, these laptops have a larger chassis to support the extra performance that you can configure. Since the Surface Laptop 4 doesn't support discrete graphics or 45-watt processors, Microsoft can work extremely thinly. It's still an accomplishment, however – the similarly configured LG Gram 16, for example, is still 0.66 inches thick. This makes the Surface Laptop 4 the slimmest 15-inch laptop you can buy.

The tiny stature of the chassis makes the build quality all the more impressive. You won't find the bend or bend that is common on laptops that thin. The lid is rigid, the hinge opens with a finger and it doesn't wobble too much either. It's a superbly made device worthy of the Surface brand.

I also like what the ultra-thin design does to make the screen stand out. The Surface Laptop 4 is one of the few 15-inch laptops that offers a 3: 2 screen – and it's great. The bezels are bigger than I'd like, but in the 15-inch form factor, they're less outrageous.

The ports include USB-C 3.1, USB-A, a headphone jack and the magnetized Surface Connect. Microsoft continues to ignore the existence of Thunderbolt 4, which means that the USB-C port is not as fast as on other laptops and cannot be used for charging. The docking capabilities of the Surface Connect port are great, although everything is proprietary.

performance

The new components make the Surface Laptop 4 what it is. It now comes with a wide range of Intel and AMD processors. AMD's Ryzen processors debuted in the Surface Laptop 3, but were a year behind with Ryzen 3000 chips. Performance was disappointing, especially when compared to a large 15-inch laptop. It made it very difficult to compete with competitors like the XPS 15 or the MacBook Pro 16-inch. Microsoft's first hug from AMD didn't go over so well.

The Surface Laptop 4 addresses this issue in two important ways. First, Ryzen processors will be available in both 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes. The smaller size is limited to the six-core Ryzen 5, while the 15-inch model only offers the eight-core Ryzen 7. These additional cores offer the Surface Laptop 4 great performance potential, especially with the 15-inch model Microsoft and AMD need all the performance they need.

The Surface Laptop 4 is pretty powerful thanks to this Ryzen processor.

These are still a year back, although they use Ryzen 4000 processors. It feels a little more forgivable given the current drought in chip shipments. More importantly, AMD achieved its biggest performance leap in the generation with Ryzen 4000, so the Surface Laptop 4 benefits from these advantages.

And that has definitely proven itself in my tests. These four additional cores mean huge improvements in multi-core performance. That was evident in benchmarks like Geekbench and Cinebench. In everything that just depends on the CPU, like the video encoding in Handbrake, the Surface Laptop 4 is pretty powerful thanks to this Ryzen processor. It also performed reasonably well on the photo editing test in PCMark 10, which makes it a reasonably decent option for photographers, and I couldn't have said that about the previous model.

Geekbench (single / multi) Cinebench R23 (single / multi) PCMark 10 3DMark Time Spy
Surface laptop 4 15 1016/6658 1137/5881 4849 1177
LG gram 16 1573/5454 1394/4137 4827 1390
Lenovo Yoga 9i 15 (Core i7-10750H) 1532/5415 1141/6400 4800 3487
MacBook Air (M1) 1727/7585 1479/6680 n / A n / A
Asus ZenBook 13 OLED (Ryzen 7 5800U) 1423/6758 1171/7824 6034 1342
Surface laptop 3 15 900/3056 722/2407 n / A 835

Based on my tests, the Surface Laptop 4's thinness is still holding it back. Less thickness means less space for airflow. Outside of the Surface Book line, this applies to all Surface products. But because of its size, many potential buyers could be fooled into thinking this is a serious workstation. This is certainly not the case – there will always be tasks the Surface Laptop 4 is not designed for, such as: B. Video editing.

I tested the Surface Laptop 4 in PugetBench for Premiere Pro, which tests everything from 4K playback to video encoding. It's sad to say, but the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 pales in comparison to the M1 MacBook Air. It's not even close – and that's a far cheaper laptop. The graphics are the culprit here, which can speed up the tasks in Premiere significantly.

It is possible to play games, but it is not pretty.

To be fair, the Radeon graphics are a massive improvement over the Vega 9 graphics I tested in the Surface Laptop 3. It ran over 30% faster in 3DMark Time Spy. If Microsoft had chosen Ryzen 5000, the graphics performance would have been a better match for Intel models.

Due to the lack of a graphics card, the Surface Laptop 4 really isn't something you want to play on. I've tried Civilization VI and Fortnite and the results have been poor. You don't want to play a full resolution game, but if you set the Civilization VI settings to Medium, you can get some playable frame rates. I wouldn't care about a game like Fortnite. I had to lower the pixel resolution to 1620 x 1080p and the 3D resolution to 70% to get 60 frames per second (fps). It is possible to play, but it is not pretty.

Battery life

Aside from performance, battery life is the most important advancement Microsoft has made with the Surface Laptop 4. Microsoft claims that this configuration gives you 17.5 hours, but I've never achieved that much. However, I got 13.5 hours in my test that went through a series of websites until the battery ran out.

That's really impressive, especially for a laptop this size. It's nearly four hours longer than the last iteration – which puts it in the league of laptops like the LG Gram 16 and many other laptops with 1080p screens.

This could be the first Surface product to exceed my battery life expectations, which is a good sign for Microsoft. This is the only case where the lack of a number of performance-hungry components is beneficial.

According to Microsoft, you can do a few more hours with the 13.5-inch AMD model, while the Intel models take about an hour less.

Display and speakers

The Surface Laptop 4 offers a beautiful resolution of 2256 x 1504 pixels that is sharp, bright (378 nits) and color accurate. I guess Microsoft only sells one resolution per size so you don't have to choose between a 1080p and a 4K model, both of which have flaws. This is the MacBook approach, and it ensures that you get a sharp screen anyway.

I want to point out that the color saturation is not quite the same as the competition, which in turn strengthens the target audience for this laptop who is not a creative professional. The screen hits 97% of the sRGB color space, but only 73% of the AdobeRGB. Microsoft offers an sRGB color mode that is included in the display settings, but has not improved the color saturation.

The speakers are under the keyboard where they point up. I prefer this position across from the bottom of the case, but the sound isn't as clear as laptops, which instead position them next to the keyboard, such as a laptop computer. B. Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro. The sound itself has a fuller audio profile than many other laptops, even with a slight hint of bass. This time around, the addition of Dolby Atmos adds the much-needed stereo separation that gives the Surface Laptop 4 a decent music and show experience.

Keyboard and touchpad

The Surface Laptop 4 has an excellent keyboard and touchpad. It's roomy and the keys have a long travel of 1.3mm. This makes for a very comfortable typing experience. The keys have a very even and even white background lighting, but only three levels of brightness.

I also have a lot of good things to say about the glass touchpad, which tracks smoothly and has plenty of room for multi-finger gestures. The palm rejection is great too, which is why I wish Microsoft had used a bigger touchpad for the 15-inch model. It would fill in the empty palm rest space better, as we've seen on many other laptops lately.

The laptop does not have a fingerprint reader but relies solely on the IR camera for secure logins. I like laptops to offer both, but Windows Hello is lightning fast on the Surface Laptop 4.

The webcam could have used an update, however. It's only 720p, which is unfortunately still the standard specification on laptops. We're seeing some new laptops transitioning to 1080p in 2021, and I would have liked Microsoft to be at the forefront of this trend to help people work from home.

Our opinion

The Surface Laptop 4 isn't perfect. The case could still be updated, and I wish Microsoft had used Ryzen 5000. But both the 13.5 and 15 inch laptops are now much better work laptops because of the improved performance and battery life. The Surface Laptop 4 has gone around the corner.

Are there alternatives?

The LG Gram 16 takes a similar approach to a large, ultra-thin laptop that isn't geared towards content creators.

It's hard not to recommend the Dell XPS 15, which has built-in or discrete graphics options. You'll also find a few cheaper options than the Surface Laptop 4, but they don't have a sharp 3: 2 screen.

How long it will take?

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 should last at least four or five years, as long as you don't get jealous when the case is inevitably redesigned.

Should you buy it?

Yes. The changes Microsoft made to this design in its fourth iteration make it a great option.

Subaru STI S209 Review: The Best STI Finally Hits The U.S.

Subaru STI S209

Subaru STI S209 review: The fastest STI comes to America

"The S209 justifies its price for Subaru super fans."

  • Incredible grip

  • Sharp, responsive chassis

  • Well behaved in the city

  • Aggressive style

  • Expensive

  • Additional performance is hardly noticeable

Subaru has a well-documented history of playing alphabet soup with hot rod cars. From the Impreza 22B to the BRZ tS, these special machines ranged from legitimate legends for road traffic to glorified equipment packages. This has led to confusion over the years. For connoisseurs, STI, which stands for Subaru Tecnica International, the company's performance-oriented sub-brand, is an acronym that stands for size.

We had a fair share of the seat time in the fifth generation WRX STI, based in Impreza, a car that is a bit unrefined compared to some of its competitors, but offers a lot of charm. But there is another STI offering that a US driver may not know about. Over the past 20 years, Subaru Tecnica International has launched a range of limited-production S-Line models that take STI performance to a new level. All were exclusive to Japan.

Subaru STI S209Bradley Iger / Digital Trends

With the S209, the latest S-Line creation from STI, Subaru decided to change the program. Only 209 copies of the automaker's latest WRX STI are produced, all of which travel to the United States.

Each model includes a laundry list with upgrades for the STI garden variety and a high MSRP of $ 63,995. This type of coin takes the STI out of its original competition set, which is occupied by cars like the Ford Focus RS and the Honda Civic Type R, and places it next to the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and the BMW M2 Competition.

Does the S209 have the hardware to secure its price?

Inside and outside

Although Subaru's performance is often linked to a rally competition on stage, S-Line vehicles focus more on the road course capabilities. For this purpose, the route intentions of this car are obvious at first glance, from the fenders on display to the canards and the unique rear wing. It is clear that the S209 has fast runtimes in mind. However, its extroverted aero is just the tip of the iceberg.

The strongest iteration of the Subaru 2.5-liter boxer engine EJ25, which we have seen in a production car, is hidden under the hood. It features a new intake and air filter design for improved engine breathing, larger injectors and a larger turbocharger that can deliver a maximum boost pressure of 18.9 psi.

There is also a trick intercooler water spray system. It works like an overboost function. With paddles mounted on the steering wheel, you can call up the system at will to inject water mist into the charge air cooler. This briefly lowers the temperatures for brief additional power surges.

The combination, which exhales through a unique low throttle exhaust system, is good for 341 hp and 330 pound-feet of torque, up to 31 hp and 40 pounds per foot. from the standard STI. Coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox with a tight gear ratio, the all-wheel-drive Sube is said to be able to perform sprints from 5 seconds up to 60 miles an hour on its way to a top speed of 162 mph from 5 seconds.

Subaru STI S209Bradley Iger / Digital Trends

Sharper looks and more grunts are always welcome, but it's the suspension and suspension improvements that really set the S209 apart from its STI-branded brothers. Specially tuned Bilstein dampers are equipped with 10 mm lowering springs, a 20 mm stabilizer bar at the rear and pillow-like bushings for the front / rear side arms to improve body control. A two-piece strut tower bar and flexible front / rear stiffeners stiffen the body of the vehicle to maximize tire grip, improve cornering stability and improve steering behavior.

Speaking of tire grip, there are some of them. This is not only due to the improvements in handling, but also to the 265 mm wide Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600A summer tires on which the S209 rolls and wrap the unique 19 × 9 inch BBS wheels. The braking force is provided by the same Brembo hardware that you find on a standard STI. However, a new material with a high friction pad replaces the standard pads to improve light resistance.

Subaru STI S209 interiorBradley Iger / Digital Trends

Inside, it usually runs as usual, although the steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara, the S209 emblem, silver contrast stitching and a serial badge in front of the gear lever help distinguish this S-Line car from other models. Subaru's 7.0-inch Multimedia Plus infotainment is standard and the only system offered in the S209. This means that navigation and the Harman Kardon sound system are not available. Fortunately, the touchscreen system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so Google Maps, Waze and other supported apps are available to help close the gap.

Steering

The standard STI has earned a reputation for being a fairly stiff driver, and given the route focus of the STI S209, we expected this machine to have even less compliance in the city.

Imagine our surprise when the S209 not only proved good-natured in LA's urban sprawl, but also more comfortable than a typical STI. The lightweight, communicative clutch and the Recaro sports seats made the car's sporting intentions clear, but had only a minimal impact on daily driving behavior. We wouldn't mind strengthening the thighs a little more to keep the front occupants seated if it was fun.

Subaru STI S209 interiorBradley Iger / Digital Trends

Speaking of which, it should come as no surprise that the technical switchbacks of the San Gabriel Mountains highlighted the greatest strengths of the S209. The extra power under the hood – even if we pulled the intercooler paddles in the hope of a video game-like performance boost – isn't transformative, but the improvements to the suspension and suspension are.

The Dunlops offer breathtaking grip and are connected to a chassis that both wants to change direction and quickly forgive imperfect inputs. This makes the S209 a car that promotes trust if you familiarize yourself with its limits.

Subaru STI S209Bradley Iger / Digital Trends

As with all WRX-based models, the overall sophistication of the Subaru pales in comparison to cars like the Volkswagen Golf R, but the quick fading of the VW in the rearview mirror on a good road will be a source of comfort for S209 owners.

Our opinion

Given its price, the fact that only 209 vehicles are built, and the lack of options available, the S209 is ultimately a model aimed more at collectors than enthusiasts. This is a bit of a shame, because the improvements in the entire car serve to noticeably increase performance without affecting driving behavior.

This is the most powerful WRX STI that has ever come out of a Subaru factory, but its price tag puts it in a league of cars that are likely to outperform it on a number of fronts. However, if Subaru applied these suspension and suspension modifications to a garden-style STI at a cheaper price, it would have a potential game changer in this segment.

How DT would configure this car

The only option available for the STI S209 is color – 128 units will be produced in World Rally Blue with matte silver wheels, while the remaining 81 cars will wear the Crystal White Pearl paint with gold wheels. Ideally, we would choose the World Rally Blue with the gold wheels of our test car, but we would be ready to settle for the combination of blue and matte silver.

Should you get one?

Most people, including enthusiasts, will want to see more powerful cars in this price range. However, if you have the resources and are a Subaru fan, this car is a real treat.

Blue by ADT Review: DIY Home Security Is Finally Here

blue from adt rating three cameras

"Blue by ADT is a solid DIY alternative to expensive security systems, but Amazon Ring and Google Nest have better apps."

  • Two-way audio with noise reduction

  • face recognition

  • Multiple privacy features

  • Works with LifeShield systems

  • Further components will follow shortly

  • Bad motion detection

  • Slow app

  • Bulky design

DIY security systems are becoming more and more attractive as they offer both homeowners and tenants affordable home security options that they can customize. LifeShield (now "Blue by ADT") has become a household name in DIY security systems. Blue by ADT announced three new cameras at CES 2020.

These cameras can work alone or as part of a LifeShield system. But Blue by ADT will release additional components in the coming months. I tested three new Blue by ADT cameras – the inside camera ($ 200), the outside camera ($ 200), and the video doorbell ($ 200). I also tested the Chime and Extender accessory ($ 50).

Here is my full review of the Blue by ADT security system.

Bulky but attractive

The indoor and outdoor cameras are both rectangular with a gray and black color scheme. The indoor camera is 4.3 inches tall, 2.6 inches wide and 1.8 inches thick. It comes with a stand that you can place on a table, desk, or bookcase. or you can mount the camera on a wall.

While the outdoor camera is completely wireless, you need to connect a power cord to the indoor camera, although it has a temporary backup in the event of a power failure. The outdoor camera is similar in size to the indoor camera, but is shorter and thicker (3.7 x 2.8 x 2.7 inches).

The video doorbell corresponds to the aesthetics of the surveillance cameras with the same color scheme. It has a thicker profile than other popular video doorbell options on the market because it measures 4.9 x 1.7 x 1.4 inches. The doorbell button is surrounded by a blue light ring, so your visitors know where to press. Each device – both the cameras and the video doorbell – has red lights that are activated when the cameras detect motion.

DIY installation

Setting up the cameras, doorbell, and chime wasn't the worst experience, but it wasn't as seamless as I expected. The carillon gave me a bit of trouble. To connect the carillon, you need to connect it to Bluetooth so that the app can find it and then connect to your Wi-Fi network. The app couldn't find the carillon when I tried it for the first time, but finally made a connection after performing a factory reset.

The outdoor camera was easy to assemble.

Setting up the indoor and outdoor cameras was relatively painless. However, the app made me re-enter my Wi-Fi credentials for each connected device instead of just letting the camera choose from my phone's Wi-Fi settings.

A positive note is that the outdoor camera was easy to install, stays securely in place, is IP65 waterproof and can withstand temperatures between 14 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The doorbell has battery support, but is not permanently operated with battery power. You must therefore connect the device to the electrical wiring of your doorbell (alternating current / 16-24 VAC transformer). However, the installation process is no more difficult than with most video doorbells on the market.

Once you've completed the installation process, you'll need to connect the doorbell to the app and re-enter your Wi-Fi credentials.

After you've connected all of your devices to the app, you can set your preferences and which features you want to use.

Functional, with a few quirks

Since the system contains several components, I will go through each one individually.

The outside camera

The outdoor camera battery lasts a long time. After two weeks, the camera's battery was still over 90 percent. It withstands different weather conditions because I placed it in the middle of my garden and the heavy rain and moisture did not affect the operation. However, the lens can become foggy. Therefore, you may want to spray an anti-fog spray on the lens.

The outdoor camera battery lasts a long time.

It has a 1080p picture with a 130 degree field of view. HD night vision works well, but night vision isn't as good as some other cameras on the market (it's not comparable to the Arlo Pro 3). The outdoor camera offers other advantages such as face recognition, bidirectional speaking and compatibility with Alexa and IFTTT. It comes with a month of free video storage. However, there is also an SD card slot for local storage. The camera has motion detection, but the motion detection function has some special features. It appears that the sensitivity to movement adapts to the sensitivity of the camera to the proximity of the movement, as opposed to the type or severity of the movement.

The inside camera

The indoor camera offers many features that we all expect from a modern surveillance camera – 1080p video, bidirectional speaking, motion detection with zones and night vision. It also has facial recognition.

A cool feature is the ability to watch out for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and send you a notification in response. It has an SD card slot and battery support in the event of a power failure. When you buy the camera, you also get free video footage for one month. The inside camera is a bit bulky, but works reliably overall.

The video doorbell

The video doorbell offers night vision, face detection, bidirectional speaking, motion detection with zones and much more. You can set the video doorbell to ring the chime and extender, or you can have it ring on your existing doorbell.

The doorbell has a 1080p image, a wide 180 degree field of view and IP65 water resistance. The doorbell has an excellent picture and you can see a lot of your porch and front lot if you place it properly.

The carillon and the extender

Another device that is an optional component of the Blue by ADT camera system is the carillon and the extender. This device plays motion signals and video doorbell chimes and at the same time extends the WiFi range and the battery life of the cameras.

It is an approximately 5-inch box that is connected to an electrical outlet. Two antennas protrude so that the cameras get a better Wi-Fi signal. It has the same color scheme as the cameras and the doorbell. Once you plug it into an electrical outlet, you don't really notice it.

The blue from ADT App

In the app, you can customize all kinds of settings, set your notification preferences, view video feeds and clips, communicate through your cameras, and more. You can activate a data protection mode for both surveillance cameras in the app and set a security question.

The app is not always fast, but it works well with the main functions of the cameras. The biggest problem I've experienced is the accidental disconnection of the outside camera. Some of the features, like the invite user feature, are also a hit and miss.

Blue from ADT and LifeShield

Additional components for the Blue by ADT system are expected to be released in 2020. Blue by ADT will come out later this year with a base and keyboard. The indoor camera can also serve as a base, so you can add a keyboard and sensors to your DIY security system.

The Blue by ADT cameras are backwards compatible with LifeShield systems.

You can currently use or purchase existing LifeShield products, and the Blue by ADT cameras are backward compatible with LifeShield systems. If you want professional monitoring, you can pay $ 20 a month (the first month is free) and there is no long-term contract.

Overall, this new DIY push is a welcome effort and is establishing itself as a competent offering in the same room as other players such as SimpliSafe, Nest Secure, Abode and Ring Protect. Even better, the company's website has been updated to reflect upfront prices for its products and services, as opposed to the "call us to get a quote" approach that has served many security system companies in the past .

Data protection functions

I asked ADT to explain some of the data protection functions of the cameras in detail. In addition to being able to put the cameras into data protection mode, Blue by ADT uses password security measures such as blocking login errors and enforcing password strength to reduce the risk. However, I haven't seen an option for two-factor authentication in the app.

The blue cameras are encrypted throughout.

The blue cameras are encrypted throughout. ADT's security features include service-wide encryption, which improves security for communication between devices, the ADT cloud and the Blue by ADT app. ADT agents cannot view live video or saved Blue videos from ADT cameras, and the cameras have an SD card slot that allows customers to use local storage.

warranty information

Blue by ADT cameras are guaranteed for one year.

Our opinion

The cameras in the Blue by ADT system are brand new and like many new products there are a few kinks. However, each of the cameras and the video doorbell offer useful functions, the integration of additional safety equipment and compatibility with assistants such as Alexa.

Is there a better alternative?

If you just want a surveillance camera or just a video doorbell, better and less expensive options are available. For example, the Wyze Cam V2 is a good choice for those looking for an affordable surveillance camera as it sells for just $ 20. And despite recent safety concerns, the Ring 2 is still an excellent video doorbell that offers easy installation and battery power. You can find a refurbished Ring 2 for under $ 100.

How long it will take?

The cameras and doorbell are robust and should last for several years if properly cared for. The doorbell and the outdoor camera are both waterproof and should be suitable for outdoor use. In addition, the cameras will become more powerful in the coming months as Blue by ADT is expanding the system and launching new products.

For example, the indoor camera will be given the ability to become the basis for a more complete system. Although the cameras are currently compatible with Alexa and IFTTT, they still need to be certified for Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant, so they should get additional features later this year.

Should you buy it

No. For those looking for a complete security system, Blue by ADT may be worth a look if budget is your main concern. However, if you only need a standalone surveillance camera or a video doorbell, Ring and Nest does better.

Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020: Entering A New Decade Having Finally Made Peace With Myself Inside & Out

Well that passed in a jiffy, didn't it? It seems as if I called a half a liter of Prosecco a few weeks ago in 2019 and wondered what the next twelve months would bring, just so that it would last a lot in bloom and come by in a flash. Perhaps it is a sign that we are getting older, that time is passing faster, and that we are constantly recognizing this fact out loud, or maybe just because we all seem to fit so much more into our days, weeks and months. But it's a little scary to be back in a brand new decade – and still no sign of hoverboards.

The past ten years have been revolutionary for me personally: They have transformed me from a social butterfly living in London, who spent her weekends feeling incredibly lonely (and her weeks incredibly stressed), into a married, country-loving homeowner, freelance consultant and dog mother. Frankly, it's more than I could have ever dreamed of – even if it wasn't necessarily the dream that I would have admitted to everyone (including myself).

Although the years have been full of lessons, struggles and successes, I can think about how I can finally love and respect myself internally and externally. And that's the only achievement of the past decade that I'm really proud of.

As a 37 year old (honestly, how the hell did that happen?) I wish I had spent a lot less time and energy shaping myself into what I thought the world wanted and more time, just to embrace the joys of youth.

Too much of me was used for yo-yo dieting, wearing uncomfortable shoes, pretending to like sports, and impressing people I wouldn't remember a few years later. Too much of me was put on putting on a brave face, creating an impenetrable exterior, proving myself worthy, and analyzing every encounter. Too much of me was used to measure my value by the size of my jeans and seek approval from the opposite sex.

Not enough time was spent just laughing, enjoying the energy and wrinkle-free complexion of the youth. And boy, what would I give to have the liver / figure / face of my 27 year old self!

Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020: Enter a new decade after finally making peace with myself Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020: Enter a new decade after finally making peace with myself

Partly driven by age, partly driven by love and partly driven by the fact that I make my living by posting photos of myself on the Internet, my own self-acceptance brings peace. I no longer feel like I have to adapt to an ideal because I have learned that it is impossible to try: I know that I am as fabulous as I am and I do not need someone else's approval to cement that.

So when we start a new decade, may it give you the confidence to love and celebrate your best self – in whatever form, overclad * or otherwise.
