Nubia Red Magic 5G Review: Wins at Games, Misses Elsewhere

Nubia Red Magic 5g review hand held

"An affordable gaming phone, assuming games are your top priority, but lacking the polish needed for a strong everyday device."

  • Good game-oriented design

  • Excellent multimedia capability

  • A lot of performance

  • Long battery life

  • Mediocre camera

  • Bad software experience

  • Fingerprint sensor is not working

The Nubia Red Magic 5G gaming phone is an enticing purchase with flagship specs for just $ 579, but buying a gaming phone is a big decision. You might want it mainly for games, but it almost certainly has to do other things as well. This includes taking pictures, making calls, using social networks and much more.

You have to live with it every day, so it has to do everything every other phone does, plus it has to meet your gaming needs. The Red Magic 5G will meet your gaming needs, but is not enough elsewhere.

design

There is no doubt that the Red Magic 5G is a gaming phone. It has cooling slots on the side, a sci-fi design on the back, and the biggest giveaway of all – the Red Magic logo lights up. My test model is in Eclipse Black, which is a bit reluctant, but the Hot Rod Red and Pulse versions are much brighter and more like what I would expect from a gaming phone design.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

This is not a featherweight. It weighs 218 grams and is also 9.8 mm thick. While this is usually too much for a "normal" smartphone like the 220-gram Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, it is quite welcome on a gaming phone because the size makes it easier to grip and hold. It's not that hard to cause fatigue, and it's still lighter than the Monster 240 gram Asus ROG Phone 2.

Despite the vents, buttons, and lights, the Eclipse Black Red Magic 5G is a bit boring to look at, and some of the visual elements are random. The three lens camera body is small and full of mismatched shapes, with only two of the lenses and not all three having a bump. The phone calls "5G" on the back, which looks uncomfortably cheap. I like the textured, bright red Game Space button on the side of the phone, which feels great.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

On the side opposite the Game Space slider are the on / off switch and the volume rocker. I usually pressed the volume button instead of the power button, which I think is too low on the side of the phone. The placement is affected by the cooling slots and two additional shoulder buttons on the same side.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Holding the Red Magic 5G in landscape mode is extremely convenient due to the excellent balance, the rounded corners, the flat screen and the chunky body. The portrait orientation is not as comfortable as the phone is not only thick, but also just a little bit wider than the Asus ROG Phone 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. The Red Magic 5G serves its target audience well, but loses notes as an everyday tool.

screen

The Red Magic 5G has the world's first screen with a refresh rate of 144 Hz on a smartphone. It is a 6.65-inch AMOLED with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. It also has a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz for a faster response.

Let's talk about the 144 Hz refresh rate. Yes, you notice the difference between 60 Hz and 90 Hz or 120 Hz, but it becomes much more difficult to see between 90 Hz and 120 GHz and between both and 144 Hz.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Red Magic 5G works at 90 Hz most of the time and is very easy on the eyes. Screens with a higher refresh rate should be displayed on all cell phones today because they make scrolling and gameplay more enjoyable. But is 144Hz overkill? The setting is activated when you play games that are optimized for Red Magic 5G, of which there are currently a handful. Real Racing 3 is one of them, and although there's no denying that it's incredibly fluid, I'm not sure if I make a big difference when compared to the 90 Hz OnePlus 8 Pro or the 120 Hz Asus ROG phone 2 found.

Watch videos with the default settings of the screen. The colors are a bit washed out and details are missing, especially when compared to the iPhone 11 Pro. Go to the "Settings" menu and select the "DCI-P3 color scale" option. This makes everything more saturated and the details are further hidden in the deeper black tones. I'm going to pick a little here because otherwise it's a great phone for games, media, and videos. The stereo speakers are loud and there is plenty of bass to the point where the back of the phone vibrates in your hand.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

There is a large bezel at the top and bottom of the screen, which is not preferable on most phones, but makes it easier to hold and edit in landscape orientation – something gamers want. For the same reason, most will be happy that there is no curve on the sides. This makes controlling games much more natural, but affects how modern the phone looks.

Play

Real Racing 3 presents the Red Magic 5G with a challenge. If you activate Game Space, you can switch the refresh rate from 144 Hz to "On". I played it in both auto and super performance modes, where it fully exploits the capabilities of the CPU and GPU. The game plays great, with no difference between minute one and minute 60 in terms of speed, smoothness and fun. However, the phone gets hot.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Red Magic 5G has an active, multi-layer cooling system with a fan (a real, whirring fan that you can hear rotating) for just this situation. It didn't make much of a difference to the phone's surface temperature, especially on the sides of the case, but I suspect that it effectively cools the components inside since the performance has never changed. The sound in action is somewhat distracting.

For comparison, I played Real Racing 3 on the Red Magic 3, the OnePlus 8 Pro and the Asus ROG Phone 2. The game looks better on the Red Magic 5G than on the OnePlus, generally brighter and more attractive and with improved response. However, it cannot keep up with the ROG Phone 2. The Asus phone's 120 Hz screen is stunning, it has front-facing stereo speakers that sound great, and the tilt control of the Asus phone responds faster than the other two. I was a better and faster driver who played on the ROG Phone 2. The ROG Phone 2 is almost twice as expensive as the Red Magic 5G, but it shows.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The phone has two capacitive shoulder buttons that work with Asphalt 9: legends for drift and boost controls. They are responsive and easy to press and locate with your finger. They were also easy to configure with most games. When you use them, your fingers stay away from the screen. The Red Magic 5G has a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz, which allows you to react quickly to your taps and swipes, while the shoulder buttons go beyond 300 Hz.

Is the Red Magic 3 about graphically intensive, processor-intensive games? I spent time playing Game Dev Tycoon with Game Space active, and although the fan did turn on occasionally, it didn't seem to be charging the phone in any way. Playing on the Red Magic 3 was no different than playing on another high-end smartphone outside of the very comfortable body, which during my review never resulted in fatigue when kept in landscape orientation.

Game space is turned on using a physical slider on the side of the phone. It acts as a menu for your games and a slot adjusts the phone's GPU and CPU performance, sets up the Pro Trigger shoulder buttons, activates the fan, 144 Hz refresh rate and also minimizes notifications. It also has a programmable macro mode to perform complex functions quickly, as well as a screen recorder system. I don't like how it suddenly increases the volume in the game when you activate it, as it has made me decrease the volume each time. If I want to increase the volume, I turn it up myself.

Overall, playing on the Red Magic 5G is a very enjoyable experience as the excellent visual and acoustic performance adds a lot to my favorite games and urges me to play more.

software

My test Red Magic 3 had Android 10 installed with the security update March 2020 and exaggerated version 2.0 of the user interface of Red Magic OS. If you expect the phone to have software as good as Google Pixel 4 or OnePlus 8 Pro, be prepared for disappointments. Red Magic phones come from device maker Nubia, which was once part of the ZTE empire, and the similarity to dodgy Android user interfaces on Nubia and old ZTE phones is still evident.

Symbols are large, stylized, and often mismatched, with some more curved than others. This makes the home screen look cheap and messy. Even though there is an app drawer, the phone still distributes app icons across multiple home screens, so you'll end up having to clean everything up yourself.

The always-on screen is customizable and shows a clock and battery level, but no notification icons. On the home screen, only a few icons have notification counters like messages, but others like WhatsApp don't. Email notifications are also not grouped in the notification shade, which results in a long list that isn't particularly useful. It's full of other little quirks, like warnings that don't have an OK option to close, but an "I know" button instead.

Handling the phone with notifications is frustrating. I checked my phone more because I couldn't tell at a glance whether a message was waiting. Otherwise there were no compatibility or performance problems. I like the Google News panel that appears and Game Space works well. In addition, drawing shoulder triggers for certain functions in a game is easy and effective. It's unfortunate that I trust the phone less because of everyday issues, which in turn means that I don't want to use it.

camera

Obviously, Red Magic is focused on gaming, and at this price, other aspects of the phone may not get the attention they deserve. The camera seems to be one of them. The main sensor has 64 megapixels, the wide-angle sensor has 8 megapixels and the macro lens has 2 megapixels. On paper, it's a mid-range setup that should still deliver some decent photos.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

In reality, work is still needed. The main problem is the dynamic range, as the phone has difficulty handling shadows and exposure, especially when the lighting is uncomfortable. Shots on sunny days have lost many details or increased the saturation too much, while some indoor shots have mixed up the colors. A photo I took of cooking rice turned yellow when, for example, there was no yellow at all.

The software of the phone supports a 3x, 5x and 10x zoom function. However, these appear to be completely digital, and the quality over 3 times is poor. Don't be fooled that the Red Magic 5G will question the Huawei P40 Pro's mega-zoom capability. There's also a wide-angle mode, but strangely, the setting is only available in Pro mode. The results are solid, so it's a shame that many miss their very existence. There are also a variety of bizarre camera modes, from a multiple exposure mode to "phantom" that gives videos a strange motion blur effect. They are all totally unforgettable.

Don't buy the Red Magic 5G and don't think the camera will be above average. I want it to get a lot better, but I guess it's not about what the phone is about. As long as you do, you won't be disappointed.

Performance, battery and security

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor is the power source of the Red Magic 5G with 8 GB or 12 GB RAM, depending on the version you purchased. My test model has 8 GB. Here are the benchmark results:

Geekbench 5: 3222 Multi Core / 902 Single Core

3DMark Sling Shot Extreme: 6702 (volcano)

These numbers match those of the Xiaomi Poco F2 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro, all of which have the same Snapdragon 865 processor. The results of the Red Magic 5G outperform the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus with Exynos technology. I haven't found any issues with the phone's performance and calls were fine, but I haven't tried the 5G connection due to movement restrictions and no 5G service near me.

There is a fingerprint sensor under the screen. This has refused to register my fingerprint at all, which makes it completely unusable. Although my software version claims to have a face unlock feature, it doesn't exist. I spoke to Red Magic about this and was informed that a software update that resolves these issues is available for my device. However, it has not yet arrived at the time of writing. My Red Magic 5G can only be secured with a PIN or a sample.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Battery life was strong, and the phone lasted a full day in addition to my usual activities, even after several hours of gaming. With more general use, it took almost two full days. However, charging does not match because the phone supports 55W quick charge, according to Red Magic, but you will need to purchase a special charger, sold separately, to charge it. Otherwise, you can get by with the 18 W charger in the box, which takes almost two hours to charge the 4,500 mAh cell. Disappointing, and there is no wireless charging either. In addition, the USB Type-C port is traditionally located at the end of the phone, as opposed to the side port on the ROG Phone 2, to improve ergonomics.

Price, guarantee and availability

You only pay £ 579 or £ 539 for the 8GB / 128GB Red Magic 5G phone I've tested here, or you can spend £ 599 or £ 599 for the 12GB / 256GB version. It's best to buy the phone through Red Magic's own website so you can take advantage of the manufacturer's warranty that covers one year in the United States and two years in the United Kingdom.

Our opinion

The Red Magic 5G does what it was built for – playing games – very well and is decent in terms of hardware. Outside of gaming, however, the phone disappoints on several fronts, including the camera, slow battery charging, and software.

Is there a better alternative?

Yes. If you only want to spend around £ 600 or £ 600, check out the OnePlus 8 and Poco F2 Pro. Both have the same processor as the Red Magic 5G, while the OnePlus 8 has a screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a more elegant design. Both have cameras that are better than the Red Magic 5G, but obviously don't have game-centered features like the shoulder buttons.

If a gaming phone is at the top of your list, the Asus ROG Phone 2 still applies despite its age of almost a year. However, we recommend waiting to see if Asus releases a sequel in the near future as there are rumors that it will arrive before the end of summer. It's also much more expensive than the Red Magic 5G, and if the price doesn't matter, it is our recommendation to put the iPhone 11 Pro at the top of your list due to the wealth and quality of the games available for it.

How long it will take?

Do you see these vents on the side of the Red Magic 5G? They should give you an indication of the phone's ability to withstand water. That's right, there is no IP protection class here, and the glass bottom and heavy weight mean that it is unlikely to be great even in a long fall. Treat it with care.

With 5G and the Snapdragon 865 and the high-spec screen, the phone should stay fresh for some time. However, if you aim to use the phone for a lot of photos now or in the future, it may not meet your needs very well. However, if you just want to play games, the Red Magic 5G will be there for you for at least several years.

I asked Red Magic for software updates. Apparently the phone will get Android 11, but there is no timeframe at the moment. The team also says it sends general software updates to the phone every two months.

Should you buy it

No. The Red Magic 5G is a good gaming smartphone, but not a great everyday smartphone.

Nintendo Switch Review: Latest Updates, Games, and More

Nintendo Switch 32 GB console

"The Nintendo Switch is a home run for Nintendo and fulfills its innovative premise."

  • Play at home or on the go

  • Sharp display

  • Unique multimode controller

  • Excellent game library

  • Great battery life

  • Limited internal storage

  • Some controller options are uncomfortable

This review was last updated on March 27th, 2020 by Lisa Marie Segarra, Gaming Editor of Digital Trends.

Nintendo wants to win you back. After the failure of the last home console, the Wii U, the publisher of Mario and Zelda, announced very quickly that they were working hard on a new console. Although the legendary publisher has made some amazing games in the meantime – like Super Mario Maker and Splatoon – Nintendo felt it was holding back, and fans accepted it because they knew there was a new era on the horizon. In our Nintendo Switch test, the question was, "Can Nintendo change things with new hardware?" The answer is a resounding "yes".

What's in the box

The Switch is a "hybrid" game console. It can be connected to a TV like a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One or can be carried as a portable device, similar to the Nintendo 3DS or Game Boy.

The switch itself is a small tablet with a 6.2-inch LCD multi-touch display. Inside, the console has a custom Nvidia Tegra processor and 32 GB of internal storage. It also has what you'd expect from a portable device: accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, Wi-Fi and WiFi (IEEE 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac).

On the outside there is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, power and volume buttons, connectors for game cartridges, a microSD slot for expandable memory, a USB Type-C connector for charging and a stand.

It also comes with a dock, a holder that the switch slides into when you want to charge it or play it on a TV. The dock is practically a hollow plastic hub that connects via the console's USB Type-C port. There are three ports on the back: USB Type C for charging, HDMI for audio and video output and a USB 2.0 port. There are also two additional USB 2.0 ports on the side. The rear connections are exposed through a simple door in the rear area, in which some cables are also hidden.

The switch perfectly reflects Nintendo's sensitivity to gaming.

Also included are two detachable controllers called "Joy-Cons", which have all controller buttons and can be slid onto the tablet, two Joy-Con straps and the Joy-Con handle, the two Joy-Cons as a single controller connects with each other.

(They're pretty versatile. For example, you can connect them to your PC or create art on a Surface Pro.)

Battery life and portability

The original switch has a battery life of 2.5 to 6 hours, and its lifespan depends on how demanding the game you are playing is. For example, a game like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" places a greater strain on the resources of the console, so the battery lasts about 3 hours, even less if you play at full brightness. To say all of this, it won't take through most flights, but it's fine if the shuttle service works.

For a system that promotes portability, this is disappointing. While both the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita last between three and five hours, Nintendo could easily have used the original Switch as an opportunity to improve the standard.

Fortunately, a new version of the Switch with improved battery life was launched in 2019. The updated console with a new chip layout and revised Tegra X1 processor dramatically improves the battery performance of the original switch and offers a battery life of 4.5 to nine hours. That's two precious hours of game time added to your Breath of the Wild game session. This change to one of the Switch's biggest flaws takes the console to a new level, especially for gamers who play a lot on the go.

Speaking of gaming on the go, while the Switch is not quite as portable as the 3DS, the upcoming Switch Lite promises to be. The Switch Lite offers a smaller, lighter, and more compact design for the family and aims to satisfy gamers who prefer the handheld gaming lifestyle. It has the same revised chip layout and the same Tegra X1 processor as the updated switch and promises a battery life of up to seven hours. The September 20 release may only add the lack of portability that the hybrid version of the console lacks.

Play your way

Although the Switch is a small tablet, it carries its soul outside of its small case. With the Joy-Cons, games can be controlled in many different ways. The small, remote-controlled controllers can be inserted and latched on both sides of the switch and transform it into a handheld game device à la Nintendo Game Boy and 3DS systems.

Both the console and Joy-Cons feel robust and are solid and of high quality.

Turning the Joy-Cons on and off may be one of the best physical design features of any game hardware in modern memory. It is simple, fun and there is a nice click that you can both feel and hear when the Joy-Cons are in place. It's a seamless transition, even in the middle of the game.

The switch feels good in the hand. Both the console and Joy-Cons feel robust and are solid and of high quality. The matte finish of the Joy-Con makes the console look and feel modern, whether you buy the gray or the colorful red-blue version. At 398 grams (0.9 pounds) and connected to Joy-Cons, it's light enough to last long distances in portable mode.

Although the dock doesn't feel as robust or well constructed as the console itself, it does the job. Although only the USB-C connector holds it in place, the switch in the dock appears to be secure and there have never been any connection problems between the console and the dock. It may be difficult to connect the switch console to the USB-C port at the bottom of the dock the first time, and the same “click” of detection that Joy-Cons provides you with to inform you that the console is secure.

Nintendo Switch review

Nintendo Switch review

If the console is connected to its dock or you just don't want to hold the entire console, you can use Joy-Cons freely or plug it into Joy-Con Grip, making it a conventional controller. The grip works like any other gamepad, but is much smaller than the Dualshock 4 of the PS4 or the Xbox One controller. This can cause discomfort in most adults. The small joysticks of the Joy-Con are also not as big as usual, making them seem difficult to grip. The optional Pro Controller fixes this problem – and is a great gamepad – but it's an accessory for $ 70.

A multiplayer machine, even on the go

Two Joy-Cons open the door for self-contained local multiplayer experiences. In some games, players can use a single Joy-Con as a controller. The Joy-Cons also have all the motion sensors that are required for gesture-based, motion-controlled games, similar to the Nintendo Wii.

However, using the individual Joy-Cons as a mini controller for the local multiplayer mode can be downright uncomfortable. The controllers are very small and have a rounded rectangular shape when rotated horizontally. Holding on to them can become painful after prolonged and / or intensive game sessions.

The included "Joy-Con straps" of the console give each Joy-Con more comfortable shoulder buttons and of course a wrist strap – but they only slightly improve comfort. The Joy-Cons are also not identical. The analog stick and the buttons are in different positions on the left and right. Joy-Cons.

The analog on the right is basically in the middle of the controller, making it difficult to get a grip on the stick. The player with the left Joy-Con definitely has an advantage when a game uses the thumb handle. If you need a controller if need be, using a replacement GameCube controller might be a better option. Thanks to a recent update, they are compatible.

There is a badly built element of the switch: its stand. It's a thin plastic flap that flips out of the back of the console and holds the console upright for multiplayer gaming on the go – or when you're tired and don't want to hold the console. The console remains upright as long as it is not touched or jostled. However, after opening it once, you are afraid that it may break. That would be particularly bad, since the stand also serves as a protective cover for the MicroSD slot.

A toy box with peripherals

There are a number of third-party peripherals that are designed to address all of the minor problems when playing the switch in its many use cases. These “optional” elements not only significantly increase the cost of the switch, they also show that the cost of the switch's “all-rounder” approach to hardware design has created a console with acceptable but annoying errors.

For example, the console's 32 GB of internal storage can store many screenshots, short video clips (for a small number of first-party games), and probably more than a few small indie games. However, players who are used to buying games digitally need a large MicroSDXC card for additional storage.

If you travel frequently and over long distances, you'll need an extra battery, similar to the one people carry around to charge their phone. Third-party accessory manufacturers have even started to develop portable docks and batteries specifically designed for the switch, such as: B. the SwitchCharge, which replaces the weak stand of the console.

If you're playing competitive or long distance games at the same time, you'll want to buy the Nintendo Pro Controller, which costs an additional $ 70.

However, not all peripheral devices have been developed to remedy the shortcomings of the system. With Nintendo Labo, launched about a year after the Switch itself, younger players can combine the Switch and its Joy-Con controllers with cardboard kits to create completely new experiences. This includes everything from playable pianos to RC cars to a fishing rod, each of which uses the system's infrared cameras and rumbles to do unexpected things. Existing games, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, are even supported, offering fans a new way of racing.

Everything about the games

Nintendo's Achilles' heel with some previous home consoles was a lack of software support. The Wii U struggled to release games consistently over its short lifespan, and the Wii struggled to attract third-party developers.

However, this did not prove to be a problem with the switch. From Zelda to Mario to Pokemon, the Switch has experienced a flood of excellent games that can appeal to long-time Nintendo fans as well as newbies.

Even better, the switch has become the point of contact for remastering, remakes and reissues of older games. It can play the original doom. It can play Star Wars Episode I: Racer. It can play the original Final Fantasy VII. It can play a variety of emulated NES and SNES games. Even The Witcher 3 is available. There is an enormous depth of content.

Mostly better online

Nintendo hasn't been at the forefront of online gaming innovation over the years, but the Switch offers a relatively stable multiplayer experience from Arms to Splatoon 2. Some games, like Mario Kart 8, work great online.

However, the limited matchmaking options in some of the biggest games, as well as the bizarre decision to omit voice chat without a smartphone app, are confusing and fading compared to the quality of life options available on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has also used its online service as a barrier to online gaming and its popular virtual console system. While a paid subscription for online access is common on current generation consoles, it's unfair to limit access to some of Nintendo's most popular retro games. Instead of allowing you to buy classics like we saw on previous Nintendo consoles, you get a selection of NES and SNES titles as part of your subscription. It's a good option, but it's a mistake to make it the only option.

Still, Nintendo has shown a surprising willingness to work with other platforms in some of its online games. If you want to play Minecraft or Fortnite: Battle Royale on Switch with your friends on Xbox or PC, you can even get Xbox successes in the case of the previous game.

No Netflix here yet

Despite its variety of game styles and parts, the Switch is actually an uncomplicated slot machine. Unlike other consoles that want to become an all-in-one living room or mobile online entertainment device, the switch is (at least for the time being) exclusively dedicated to gaming and gaming.

The user interface is very simple – a series of large squares that show your available games. Below the games there is a second set of smaller round buttons with a Nintendo curated blog feed, eShop, a place to view and share screenshots, etc.

Only a few non-gaming apps are currently available – Hulu is currently the only major streaming service – and Nintendo has not specified when or if these features will come to the console. As with the camera, its omission is not a big loss.

Most players already have a large number of devices – phones, tablets, laptops – on which they can watch Netflix and YouTube. At the same time, the switch would be a good personal screen with its sharp screen and third-party status.

Maybe Link can save our world

You probably don't think about the performance a game console consumes, but it can be significant. An Xbox One X can suck more juice than a small fridge while playing. This harms our planet and can cause hidden costs for your electricity bills over time.

The Nintendo portable switch circumvents the problem. When playing in docked mode, about 12 watts are consumed. The switch's total power consumption is even lower if other factors such as standby and data center usage are taken into account. PlayStation and Xbox consoles often download large patches and can be used to stream content from power-hungry data centers.

It all adds up. A study by the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory found that the switch uses less than a tenth as much power as the PlayStation 4 Pro when all energy sources are taken into account. It's far less demanding than the Xbox One S or Xbox One X.

The switch can also store your wallet. A light player spends $ 47 less on their electricity bills if they buy the switch instead of a PlayStation 4 Pro. A player who often plays all day can save up to $ 180. That's enough to buy three new games at full price.

Nintendo also offers free recycling for your old console and peripherals through the Take Back program. Microsoft and Sony offer similar programs, but they are more difficult to find on each company's website.

Warranty information

The Nintendo Switch comes with a one-year warranty from the manufacturer.

Our opinion

The Switch manages to combine Nintendo's penchant for strange, tricky hardware with the high-quality design that we expect from consoles in the modern era. From a hardware perspective, it's the best console the company has had in generations – possibly ever.

Nevertheless, the Switch is a Nintendo machine that was developed to play Nintendo games. Despite all the measures taken to reinforce the feeling of the mainstream, the shortcomings show that the console was designed so that the developers of Nintendo can develop interesting games. If you love Nintendo, this is a good sign as the capital N seems to be taking a new step.

Is there a better alternative?

The switch is unique. There are no platforms that offer the same home / portable “hybrid” functionality or such a wide range of controller options. Many of his best franchise companies like Splatoon and Mario cannot be played on any other platform, Nintendo or in any other way.

If you can do without Nintendo games and play on a TV or monitor, it's better to buy a PS4, Xbox One, or a gaming PC. If you already have one of these, the Switch is a fantastic second system that gives you access to more original games than any other option.

If you are specifically looking for a portable platform, we recommend the Switch over the 3DS. With improved battery life and an extensive collection of games available on the switch, you would only limit your options if you have an inferior handheld that is at the end of its life cycle.

How long it will take?

In the past, successful game consoles have a shelf life of about five years before the manufacturer makes a new console. We should also note that console manufacturers have worked to shorten the lifecycle of systems, even if the hardware is successful. This is the case with the switch.

Nintendo launched an updated version of the console with improved battery life two years after its first release. The Switch Lite, a compact version of the Switch that was developed exclusively for handheld games, came onto the market shortly afterwards. Original Switch owners who aren't interested in a more handheld-friendly console will likely pass the Switch Lite on, but the revised version of the Switch is a permanent replacement for the original, which significantly shortens battery life, which was a bit short of the debut version.

Should you buy it

Yes. If you love Nintendo and want to keep playing new Nintendo games or already have a modern game console, the Switch should be your next game console. However, if this is your first modern console or you mostly want to play a lot of games online, you should fit.

Google Stadia Review: You Can’t Play Games On Potential

google stadia review rs 3

Google Stadia Premiere Edition

"Google Stadia has immense potential, but a confusing interface and small library sell it briefly."

  • Excellent picture quality

  • Plays excellently on TV and on the phone

  • 1080p animal is free

  • Poor PC performance

  • Latency can be an issue

  • Too few games at the start

  • Subscription is not a good value

This review was updated by Matthew S. Smith on 03/04/2020.

I picked up Death Stranding when it was released. Not a download, but a real, physical CD. I took it home and put it on my PlayStation 4 Pro.

You think that would be the end, but it was not. An installation bar crawled across my screen at an agonizing pace. When it was done, I checked the time on my phone. An hour and a half had passed since I touched the game for the first time; 40 minutes since I put it in the console.

Google wants to fix this with Stadia.

What is Stadia?

Stadia is Google's cloud gaming service. You need an internet connection and a Google account. If you have this, starting a game is easy. No expensive console or gaming rig is required. There is no need to install from a disc or cassette. There is nothing to download. Just buy, play, and off you go.

That is the dream anyway. It is big and that means big obstacles. Errors, a lean library and confusing interface decisions bring Stadia's cloud gaming future to the ground.

Stadia basics

Google relies on the simplicity of Stadia, but it is not easy. Misunderstandings about the service have increased since its announcement. It was called "Netflix for games". It was called a console replacement. It was referred to as a switch competitor.

Here is the summary: Stadia is a cloud service that runs games on Google's servers and then transfers them to your device. You can play on a TV, phone, or PC.

Stadia is not an all-in-one game library like Xbox Game Pass, so the comparison "Netflix for games" falls apart.

Stadia has two levels of service. The basic level offers 1080p quality with stereo sound. Unfortunately it is not yet available. The Stadia Pro tier costs $ 10 a month, offers 4K HDR quality, 5.1 surround sound, and benefits like free games and game discounts.

This isn't an all-in-one game library like Xbox Game Pass, so the Netflix for Games comparison falls apart. Aside from a handful of "free" games included in Stadia Pro, you need to buy the Stadia version of every game you want to play in the Stadia store.

Confusion comes in the small print. You can play on your TV, but you'll need a Google Chromecast Ultra to launch it. You can play on a phone, but you need a supporting Android phone. You can play on your PC, but only in the Chrome browser.

There is more. PC users can play on startup, but they cannot play in 4K with HDR. That will not come until 2020. There is a whole table that lists the different ways in which Stadia devices and game controllers work together (or do not work together). You cannot buy games on TV. This is only possible in the Stadia app on your phone.

Stadia has a limitation for every situation.

Access is also confusing. Stadia was launched, but only if you either ordered the $ 129 Founder's Edition or bought the Premiere Edition for a similar price. This includes a Chromecast Ultra, a controller and three months of Stadia Pro. Don't you want the hardware? Then you won't be able to play for now, even if you're ready to pay for Stadia Pro.

It goes on and on and on. Stadia has a limitation for every situation that undermines the simplicity promised by Google.

No, I don't have to wait for a game to be installed like I did when I brought Death Stranding home. But Stadia still gives me a lot to fear.

The controller is overpriced

The founders edition I received for this review includes the Chromecast Ultra and the Stadia controller. We have tested the Chromecast Ultra in the past and it is a simple streaming puck so I don’t spend time describing it. The Stadia Controller, new and unique in Stadia, is more fascinating.

OK, I lied. It is not. It is a generic controller. The design has a lot in common with the Nintendo Switch Pro controller, while the Thumbstick layout is similar to PlayStation's DualShock4.

The Stadia controller feels good in the hand and works well, but is not comparable to the controllers from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony. The triggers feel a bit loose and the D-Pad is vague compared to the DualShock 4 or Nintendo Switch Pro controller.

Rich Shibley / Digital Trends

The only unique features are two buttons that are located above the "Stadiums" button (which brings up the "Stadiums" menu) and below the "Select" and "Start" buttons. One calls Google Assistant, the other takes screenshots. Technically, these add more features, but I found them confusing. I have pressed the wrong key many times because I am used to having only two keys in this area. However, I assume that I will familiarize myself with the time.

The Stadia Controller can be purchased individually for $ 69. This is the Nintendo Prize and the Stadia Controller doesn't deserve it. An Xbox wireless controller costs $ 60 at MSRP and is often available for far less.

Some good news? The controller works with other games and services. It even works with other cloud gaming services like GeForce Now and Shadow from Nvidia.

You do not have to buy the Stadia controller if you wait until the service is generally available next year. Alternative controllers, including the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controllers, can be used to play Stadia on a phone or PC. However, they don't work with Chromecast Ultra.

Stadiums fulfill the dream …

It's not looking good for Stadia, is it? The start of Google was half-hearted. Many functions are missing or confusing.

Here's the good news: Stadia works. The dream of seamless, patch-free, download-free and high quality games is true.

I spent most of my time playing Stadia on TV. My home has the luxury of gigabit internet, so I wasn't surprised to see smooth gameplay on my TV. Still, it's an impressive technical feat. The picture quality was excellent. Blur, banding and stuttering were rarely visible, but the image quality was comparable to a console most of the time.

As confirmation, I switched between Destiny 2 in Stadia and Destiny 2 in my PlayStation 4 Pro and found little difference. Details appeared the same on everyone. In dark scenes, the stadiums lacked contrast, but otherwise there were few flaws.

Rich Shibley / Digital Trends

The mobile experience (via WiFi) was even more breathtaking. Destiny 2 looked fantastic on the small, sharp display of the Pixel 3a. Stuttering and delay were rare annoyances that didn't stop me from playing the game.

I am still amazed at how smooth it felt. Stadia sets new standards for graphics quality on mobile devices. This is the full experience running in console quality on a smartphone. The phone doesn't even heat up and the battery life is reasonable as games are run in the cloud. I used less than half of the battery on the Pixel 3a during a two-hour session of Destiny 2.

Google promised to deliver a console-quality gaming experience over the Internet. At this point, Stadia delivers the goods. I couldn't tell the difference between Stadia and my PlayStation 4 Pro. Unlike my PlayStation, Stadia never asked to install, patch or update a game.

As an added bonus, Stadia's loading times are fantastic. Levels are usually loaded in just a few seconds. This is a big leap over the PlayStation 4 Pro, where charging times over 30 seconds are the norm.

… but you have to wake up at some point

At best, Stadia delivers what was promised. This is a technical achievement that deserves recognition. But I think you know what's next. It's time to talk about the shortcomings.

The latency was a companion on all devices that I tried. Google tried to downplay the latency in its marketing, but made no mistake. It is there.

The problem was the worst in Mortal Kombat 11, which like all fighting games requires accurate timing. After less than half an hour, I stopped playing in frustration. I was consistently hit shortly after I pressed the D-pad to dodge while my attacks wielded the space my opponent was just a moment before. I'm the first to admit I'm bad at fighting games, but I've played Mortal Kombat 11 on both the PC and the console. The game felt appealing to both.

Rich Shibley / Digital Trends

In Destiny 2, the latency was bearable thanks to the slow pace of action, but I found that I often missed over-corrected and melee attacks that I should have hit. It didn't make the game more difficult, but it lacked the crisp, snappy feeling I'm used to from playing Destiny 2 on a PC.

The problem was temporary and came and went like the tide. In the worst case, I turned 360 degrees in Destiny 2, as if I had suddenly teleported into a session from Tony Hawk. In other cases, the latency was absent, so even Mortal Kombat 11 felt smooth for a few minutes. Latency often correlated with reduced image quality and stuttering, but not always.

The picture quality can be excellent, but it can be neglected depending on the available bandwidth and the device you are playing with. As you'd expect, you'll have the best experience if you have a great ISP and can connect directly to a router via Ethernet. However, if you cannot do this, you can expect blurriness in the image. The level of softness depends on the resolution you want to play with and the quality of your connection. If you're using Wi-Fi, you can expect the picture quality to vary significantly during your gaming session.

How important that is depends on what you're playing. It didn't affect my experience in Destiny 2 as the game's strong art style shines through even when Stadia's image quality leaps. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, on the other hand, tries a sharp and realistic look. If you are on a PC or TV, you will find that the bandwidth forces the stream to a resolution well below that of the screen.

About this game library

Stadia's technical achievements and shortcomings are worth discussing. It is a revolutionary platform with immense potential and serious problems. However, all of this may not matter since there is not much to play.

The platform offers a slim selection of games. The list includes several popular peculiarities, including Destiny 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Metro Exodus, NBA 2K20, and the recent Tomb Raider trilogy.

Rich Shibley / Digital Trends

These are good games, nothing will lure players to Stadia from other platforms. Even Apple Arcade started with a strong selection of exclusive games.

I'm also deeply upset with Google's decision to create its own platform. This hurts Destiny 2 deeply, where you can only play with other Stadia players (but your profile is cross-save compatible). Want to show a friend a success in Red Dead Redemption 2? You need to take a photo of it on your phone because your friend may not have used Stadia and may not even have heard of it.

Google's game prices don't look good either. Many games are sold at their original MSRP. Mortal Kombat 11 for PlayStation 4 costs $ 25 on Amazon and $ 59.99 on Stadia. This pattern is repeated throughout the cast. Occasional sales lower the prices of selected titles, but the offers have not yet impressed.

The limited library makes Stadia Pro subscription difficult to bear. Why should you pay $ 60 for Mortal Kombat 11 in Stadia and get a monthly subscription of $ 10? This is only useful if you do not have a current generation console and a playable PC, but want to play modern games with 4K resolution and HDR switched on.

This is the most serious problem for stadiums. It's faster and more convenient than my PlayStation 4 Pro, but I can't play Death Stranding in Stadia. I also can't play Control, Civilization VI, The Witcher 3, Final Fantasy XIV and many other games that I enjoy. Patches and system updates are annoying, but I would rather deal with occasional patches or installations than just play the handful of titles on Stadia.

Use all the data

Streaming can use a lot of data, and Stadia is no exception. In fact, it is one of the data hungry services you can use today.

I tested the data usage when playing Destiny 2 on the Pixel 3a via WiFi. After three test runs, each lasting five minutes, the average data usage was approximately 830 megabytes per test. Do the math and Stadia consumes an incredible 10 gigabytes every hour.

Stadia consumes an incredible 10 gigabytes every hour.

Playing at this speed is not possible on the go, even if you have a data connection that is reliable enough to make it possible. You will quickly use up your data limit. Remember that even unlimited plans are not really unlimited. Heavy players may encounter their data limits when connected to the internet at home, although I assume that this will be rare.

Our opinion

The Stadia from Google is an amazing technical feat. I am honestly impressed with its quality and performance. I was skeptical, but I came out as a convert. Cloud gaming works. Home consoles will last at least another generation, but Stadia proves that the cloud can really replace a console – at least if you have an excellent internet connection.

That makes it a shame that the execution of Google Stadia has turned into a labyrinth with no exit and with many dead ends. The functions do not work the same on all devices. PC performance is a disaster. And the limited game library will not win Stadia fans.

Maybe one day I'll leave my consoles to the cloud, but I'll keep them for now. Stadia is not worth the price of the $ 129 Premium Edition or the $ 10 monthly subscription.

Is there a better alternative?

Alternatives include GeForce Now from Nvidia, Shadow, PlayStation Now and Microsoft’s Project xCloud, which is still being tested. Shadow is arguably the most mature of them, and since it mimics a PC, it can play almost anything a PC can play. The downside is pricing; With an annual commitment, it is at least $ 12.99 per month. Nvidia's GeForce Now is the budget option and even offers a free tier with a session limit of one hour, but limited to a resolution of 1080p.

Should you buy it

Stadia has potential. However, you cannot play potential games.
