The kart racing genre is packed with standout titles, each with their own twists and turns. Mario Kart is the undeniable king, but tons of other franchises – Sonic and Crash Bandicoot, to name a few – have their own somewhat unique karting games. Hot Wheels Unleashed then rushes into the fray of this competition and screams, “Look how realistic our cars are!” Before promptly being blown away like a piece of paper on a racetrack.

That's because Hot Wheels Unleashed, a fun kart racer, quickly shows its flatness when you start playing. Behind its extremely impressive graphics, Hot Wheels Unleashed is about as naked as it gets, offering an extremely simplified kart racing experience that had so much potential to be more and a bevy of ultimately boring content.

A brilliant start

The experience starts strong and goes from zero to sixty. When you start it for the first time, Hot Wheels Unleashed gives you three “blind boxes”, a tastelessly named loot box. Players are instantly given three cars to use in races, and the first glance at their stunningly rendered plastic and aluminum is all it takes to get someone hooked.

Before it's fun or inventive, Hot Wheels Unleashed is a nice game to check out. Everything from the cars themselves to the tracks players drive is breathtakingly detailed. You can even look under the cars and find Mattel's name (copyrighted of course) and “Made In Malaysia” on the plastic. The game's vinyl tracks look spectacular and the sunlight that shines from them and the cars is eye catching. These are, of course, the visuals you would expect on a PS5 or PC. If you're playing the game on a last-generation console, the visual shock and awe may not be as expressive.

Regardless, I got sucked into the vibe of Hot Wheels Unleashed for the first two hours that I played it. The game is just fun to watch, and its racing mechanics are equally impressive, although that feeling quickly fades.

Racing in Hot Wheels Unleashed is awfully easy. There are no power ups on tracks, with the only quirk of the game being how it handles boosting. By drifting or simply driving along, your car builds up thrust, which you can then use to detach yourself from a car driver or to catch up with the leader.

However, not all boosts are created equal. Cars in Hot Wheels Unleashed are extremely varied, each with their own stats for speed, acceleration, braking, handling, and of course, boost. Some cars have individual boost charges while others have a counter that can be spent at any time. Of course, this system means you will be directed to every car that has impressive statistics. You can also upgrade any car with gears, either of the game's two currencies, but upgrading a vehicle from an ordinary tier to a legendary one is incredibly expensive.

Before it's fun or inventive, Hot Wheels Unleashed is a nice game to check out.

That being said, there is an unspoken genius in the track design of Hot Wheels Unleashed. Some races are wonderfully unique and open, with one thing left on my mind that forced me to run a 180 degree corkscrew to land my car after driving on an inverted maglev. Another section from another race made me pull off the track for a single turn, instructing me on where to go from a handful of traffic cones. Except you can drive outside of those cones in-game, so I'd pull a tight drift and completely bypass the usual corner in favor of my much faster shortcut.

So it's a shame that Hot Wheels Unleashed never makes full use of any of these concepts. If you try to skip a distance with a certain imagination, you will be sent back to the last checkpoint. Gravity and tricks almost never come into play, save for a few standout tracks. With more frequent use, these ideas could have made Hot Wheels Unleashed stand out from the rest. However, instead of accepting this weirdness, the game tries to be a no-nonsense racer and eventually becomes total boredom.

Slowly to the goal

The more I played Hot Wheels Unleashed, the more problems I saw with the game. Aside from the clear tendency to push players to specific cars instead of what they wanted, the game's main single player mode was quickly getting old. The mode called Hot Wheels City Rumble lets players go from race to race, which normally wouldn't get tiring in a game like Mario Kart.

Hot Wheels Unleashed's races, however, have little that defines them. Yes, the tracks are quite varied, only a handful have been repeated during my playing time, but at some point the races start to mix into a big jumble of vinyl and neon. Thankfully, there's a pretty good reason to stick with these races. If you win a race, players will be rewarded with gears, cosmetics, and coins that can be used to buy more blind boxes.

However, these cosmetics are not for your cars; They are for one of the most redundant pieces of content in the game. Every player has a basement that can be adjusted to their hearts' content, and it's pretty much a man's cave for a Hot Wheels-obsessed millionaire. Players can customize this area to their liking with unlocked sofas, chairs, computers, walls, floors, and more. The attraction, I think, is that you can then race around in this area. However, it's hard to see the trophies in boxes or paintings hanging on the wall when your camera is two inches off the floor.

However, instead of accepting this weirdness, the game tries to be a no-nonsense racer and eventually becomes total boredom.

The only innovative feature of Hot Wheels Unleashed is the track construction. Right from the start, players can take full advantage of every single unique route in the game. It allows players to take advantage of the ideas that were given up by the game's developers, which I can only hope will happen in the end.

Our opinion

Aside from its stunning looks, Hot Wheels Unleashed is a toothless kart racer who relies too heavily on the nostalgic glasses and the Hot Wheels brand to wear instead of the solid ideas that are barely implemented in the end. What players get with Hot Wheels Unleashed is the same experience I had with many of my Hot Wheels as a kid; I was entertained for a couple of hours, then I got bored and threw it in a box.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy the game. Those few hours have been full of spectacle because it's just impossible not to get caught up in the sights and sounds of the game. At some point, however, it takes more than driving a hot dog car over a vinyl strip to interest me.

Is there a better alternative?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the king of kart racers and will likely remain so until Nintendo decides to make another Mario Kart title.

How long it will take?

Defeating Hot Wheels Unleashed's City Rumble mode will likely take 15-20 hours. Trying to collect every car in the game could bring that to over 30, by my estimate.

Should you buy it?

No. Hot Wheels Unleashed is all glitter with no substance and becomes dull too quickly to justify its price.

Train Hard, Recover Harder | Breaking Muscle

Because of my email inbox and Instagram DMs, post workout recovery is a hot topic. I get all sorts of questions about recovery techniques.

  • "Can you rate my supplement stacks?"
  • "Should I do active recovery training?"
  • "When do I foam?"
  • "How would you change my diet on rest days?"
  • "What post-exercise stretching routine should I do?"
  • "Do ice baths or cold showers help my winnings?"
  • "What about cupping, compression garments, and percussion massagers?"

I'm glad people are paying some attention to their recovery. Unfortunately, I think they are paying their attention to the wrong pieces of the recovery puzzle. In this series of articles, I'm going to help you maximize your recovery and results by focusing on what really matters.

I will explain::

  1. Why stress is a double-edged sword and how to deal with it.

This trend towards paying more attention to recreation is admirable.

In part, this is not surprising I like to remind people that instead of lifting bigger and stronger weights, they are recovering from lifting weights.

I have tried many times to illustrate the importance of recovery by presenting progress as a simple equation:

Stimulus + recovery = adjustment

Stress can be good

Stress can be both good and bad. Good stress, or what psychologists call eustress, is the type of stress we feel when we are excited. Exercise is a burden on the body. With sufficient dosage, it is undoubtedly useful.

Bad stress comes in two forms:

  1. Acute Stress triggers the body's stress response, but these triggers and emotions are not happy or exciting. In general, acute stress does not take a heavy toll. The stress response is fleeting and the body quickly returns to homeostasis or its pre-stress state.
  2. Chronic Stress is bad. It occurs when we are repeatedly exposed to stressors that take a heavy toll. We often feel down, overwhelmed, and trapped by this stress. For example, a stressful job with a donkey for a boss or an unhappy relationship at home can cause chronic stress.

Your tolerance and ability to cope with stress are different from mine.

Our tolerance also fluctuates over time. There is only so much stress to deal with. When you are under too much pressure you become overwhelmed. Your recovery from exercise will suffer during times of high stress.

Managing your stress level improves the quality of life.

It improves your digestion, rest, mood, and productivity. It will also improve your muscle building and fat loss.

Coping with stress; Not avoidance

Note that I am calling it stress management – not avoiding or reducing stress.

The fact is, you can't completely avoid stress.

However, you can improve management. The better you deal with stress, you will be happier, fitter, leaner, and more muscular. In short, life is getting better.

What is stress

The body's control center is the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS regulates the involuntary functions of the human body. The stuff that happens without you consciously thinking about it, like breathing or digestion.

The ANS has two branches::

  1. The parasympathetic is also known as resting and digestive mode.
  2. The sympathetic is the fight or flight mode.

These two work like a seesaw. Whenever one of the modes is activated, the other is not activated. When one is up, the other is down.

Unfortunately, your body cannot differentiate between different types of stress.

When the sympathetic nervous system is upregulated, it can't tell the difference between the stress of a life-threatening event, challenging workout, or the asshole that just cut you off in traffic.

To deal with stress, we want to spend most of our time in a parasympathetic state. However, the reality is that we spend too much time in a personable state. The uninterrupted flood of stress adds up when we face daily challenges.

This sympathetic state has many negative health effects and inhibits our ability to build lean muscles and reduce body fat.

In my experience, so many hard-gainers have difficulty seeing progress because they are chronically stressed and are working to manage stress, which increases their anxiety and creates a downward spiral.

Instead of winning hard, I refer to these people as easy losers.

Their stress levels cause them to lose profit at an alarming rate at the slightest change in a routine or a life circumstance because they handle stress badly.

With this in mind, it is time to identify strategies that can be used to control stress as much as possible.

Heart rate monitoring to help manage stress

A good indicator of your stress level and your parasympathetic versus sympathetic dominance is your waking heart rate.

By monitoring your heart rate, you can get useful data that can help you assess your general stress status and determine when it is increasing.

Significant increases or decreases in your waking heart rate indicate when you are experiencing higher periods of stress. I suggest you get a decent heart rate monitor to assess this. You can also examine heart rate variability apps to add another tier of rating.

Be more productive with less stress

Cal Newport talks about how the autopilot can help you be more productive and less stressed. He says that there are two types of work in his world:

  1. Regularly occurring tasks

  2. Tasks that do not occur regularly

Being autopilot applies to almost everyone.

The problem with tasks that occur regularly is that they are so numerous that if we try to manage them on the fly, we get left behind and overwhelmed.

I believe that feeling of being overwhelmed is one of the main drivers of stress in people's lives. It is certainly a major cause of mine.

To cope with this, Newport assigns a specific time slot to each regularly occurring task. He calls this his autopilot schedule. He found that he doesn't waste time or energy prioritizing and planning tasks on a daily basis. You're on autopilot.

Once you've assigned this stuff to specific times and made it a routine, you can assign any other available times to other things that interest you. This method requires some advance planning, but it pays off.

The last point is to understand that it will take time to refine and adjust this process.

Fortunately, you're so much more efficient that you have the time to make adjustments as needed.

The miracle morning routine for positivity

When you have a morning routine to start your day, you are on the right foot and set the scene for the rest of the day.

You can run the day instead of the day you run.

I am a supporter of the Miracle Morning Routine. I'm doing the express version, which takes less than 15 minutes and has six steps.

The six steps are::

  1. remain silent

  2. Affirmations

  3. Visualizations

  4. exercise

  5. read

  6. Write

Various apps are available to walk you through the process.

If I stick to the Miracle Morning routine, I will be more productive and feel in control.

Meditation combats stress

Meditation is a great way to combat stress. I haven't gone full muesli yogi yet. When I get a little older, I may fully embrace Zen.

I am aware that the word meditation has negative connotations in some people (my cereal yogi reference is a case in point). So if you're not ready to think about meditation, call it silence, chillaxing, mindfulness, or whatever makes you comfortable.

Instead of fully meditating, I sit quietly and concentrate on my breath for a few minutes.

Abdominal breathing, breathing deeply through your nose and slowly exhaling through your mouth do the trick.

If you want a guide, the Headspace app is excellent. I did some of the 5-10 minute guided meditations and it definitely calms you down. Those few minutes a day have a remarkable effect on managing your stress levels.

Mindfulness

Being mindful or present is all the rage these days.

There's a good reason for that. We live in an always connected, yet very distracted world. The sheer amount of input competing for our attention is mind-boggling.

Living in this always distracted state is stressful and is similar to attention deficit disorder (ADD).

Try to fix this:

  • By focusing on one task at a time
  • Then try to be present during this task.
  • Immerse yourself in the sounds, smells, sensations, images and tastes of everything you do.

It doesn't matter whether you keep a diary in your leather-bound notepad while you have a coffee, hang out with friends over a barbecue or write the sales pitch in front of your laptop in the office.

When you are fully in the moment, you will become more productive, efficient, and effective in everything you do. It will help improve your mood and filter out potential external stressors.

Emotional responses last 90 seconds

In his book The Chimp Paradox, Dr. Steve Peters on our chimpanzee brain and how it can control us. When the chimpanzee takes over, the logic evaporates and the emotions take over.

Too often when we are under stress we act emotionally. The chimpanzee in us becomes irritable and can wreak havoc before we know what happened.

When we get an emotional reaction to something, it usually wears off after about 90 seconds if we don't respond to it.

Pema Chodron talks about it in the book "Living beautifully: With uncertainty and change".

Emotions will drain and drain. In stressful situations, they can rise up inside you like a tsunami. It's only natural. The best way to deal with stress and keep it under control seems to be to accept the emotions. To feel it. But don't act on them. If you act on them, you add fuel to their fire. They will rage higher and longer. Instead, let them burn themselves. Then, when you are calm and the logic has returned, think about how you can avoid repeating the situation that put you in a position of stress and brought up negative emotions such as fear, worry, hate or fear.

Take a deep breath

While feeling the emotions, it may be a good idea to inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale through your mouth.

This deep breathing has an incredibly calming effect on your body. In my experience, it can help speed the reduction of negative emotions when they occur.

A side effect of stress is shallow breathing.

Shallow breathing interferes with proper oxygenation to cells and reduces your body's ability to recover.

Given that I love to say, "You don't get heavy weights, you make a big recovery from lifting weights."

I've said it twice in this article, so it should be obvious why I believe that if you get stuck in a stressed, shallow state of breathing, it will limit your gains.

Tip for recovery after exercise: With a few simple breathing exercises you can switch from combat or flight mode to rest and digestion mode after training.

This breathing immediately reduces stress, increases the oxygen supply to the cells and accelerates the recovery processes. Exercising in the evening will also help you relax and fall asleep.

Sleep is the most powerful recovery tool available to you. It is therefore of vital importance!

Breathing exercises can also be useful as a proactive stress management tool when done daily. As I mentioned before, I try for a few minutes every morning. It creates a wonderfully calm feeling. I would never claim to be calm, but this is probably the next thing I feel.

Gain perspective

Is it that bad what challenges you? Most of the things we worry about are not that important. It is rarely life or death, or it leads us to financial ruin.

Sit back, take stock, and ask yourself, "What's the worst that can happen?"? "

Often you can gain perspective, look at the stressor objectively and place its meaning appropriately in the hierarchy of events, needs, desires or stresses in your life.

Then nine times out of ten you will relax and find that you unnecessarily twisted your knickers.

Phone addiction

What do you instinctively do while waiting for a train or a queue? Most of us reach for our cell phones. This dependency for our phone wasn't the case 10 to 12 years ago.

We'd have to wait – just preoccupied with our thoughts or maybe the conversation has started with a stranger waiting next to us (conversations with real people, in person – that's strange).

We have lost the art of patience, waiting and thinking.

Boredom is a thing of the past. There's always a notification, something on social media, YouTube, or Netflix to keep us entertained. We are still joining the matrix and we seem unable to extract ourselves.

Smartphones have many advantages (don't get me wrong, smartphones are amazing). The downside is that we have become slaves to them.

Our phones increase our stress and anxiety and help us achieve a personable state.

Try to take some time – some kind of digital detox. Turning off / on airplane mode can reduce stress and anxiety. It can also enable you to achieve the mindfulness and presence that I discussed earlier.

It is not easy to take time for our phones. Smartphones are addicting! I have problems with this, but I know that when the phone is out of sight, when I'm at work or out with family, I'm less stressed, more productive, and happier. This struggle also applies to those I am with. Start small and build time.

Some ideas to control the usage of your phone are:::

  • Don't check for the first 30 minutes of your day.

  • If you are doing important work, please switch it to airplane mode and set a timer for how long the work task should last. Don't look at your phone until the time is up.

  • No smartphones with meals

  • Put your phone in a different room at home so you don't get distracted by it.

  • Are you watching TV with your wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend, friends, family, cat or dog? Keep the phone out of sight. Enjoy doing what you do and the fact that the phone doesn't distract you.

  • Set up restricted areas. Whether it's physical (e.g. not in the bedroom) or time zones (e.g. not using the phone for the first hour after getting home from work), this rule improves the quality of your relationships to important other people.

  • Set a good example. If you want to be less distracted when spending time with your partner, the first thing you should do is consciously be less distracted. Then, when you suggest that they do the same, they are more likely to respect and value your opinion. Trying to impose it on them before you have achieved it will meet with resistance.

Because of my email inbox and Instagram DMs, post workout recovery is a hot topic. I get all sorts of questions about recovery techniques.

  • "Can you rate my supplement stacks?"
  • "Should I do active recovery training?"
  • "When do I foam?"
  • "How would you change my diet on rest days?"
  • "What post-exercise stretching routine should I do?"
  • "Do ice baths or cold showers help my winnings?"
  • "What about cupping, compression garments, and percussion massagers?"

I'm glad people are paying some attention to their recovery. Unfortunately, I think they are paying their attention to the wrong pieces of the recovery puzzle. In this series of articles, I'm going to help you maximize your recovery and results by focusing on what really matters.

I will explain::

This trend towards paying more attention to recreation is admirable.

In part, this is not surprising I like to remind people that instead of lifting bigger and stronger weights, they are recovering from lifting weights.

I have tried many times to illustrate the importance of recovery by presenting progress as a simple equation:

Stimulus + recovery = adjustment

Stress can be good

Stress can be both good and bad. Good stress, or what psychologists call eustress, is the type of stress we feel when we are excited. Exercise is a burden on the body. With sufficient dosage, it is undoubtedly useful.

Bad stress comes in two forms:

  1. Acute Stress triggers the body's stress response, but these triggers and emotions are not happy or exciting. In general, acute stress does not take a heavy toll. The stress response is fleeting and the body quickly returns to homeostasis or its pre-stress state.
  2. Chronic Stress is bad. It occurs when we are repeatedly exposed to stressors that take a heavy toll. We often feel down, overwhelmed, and trapped by this stress. For example, a stressful job with a donkey for a boss or an unhappy relationship at home can cause chronic stress.

Your tolerance and ability to cope with stress are different from mine.

Our tolerance also fluctuates over time. There is only so much stress to deal with. When you are under too much pressure you become overwhelmed. Your recovery from exercise will suffer during times of high stress.

Managing your stress level improves the quality of life.

It improves your digestion, rest, mood, and productivity. It will also improve your muscle building and fat loss.

Coping with stress; Not avoidance

Note that I am calling it stress management – not avoiding or reducing stress.

The fact is, you can't completely avoid stress.

However, you can improve management. The better you deal with stress, you will be happier, fitter, leaner, and more muscular. In short, life is getting better.

What is stress

The body's control center is the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS regulates the involuntary functions of the human body. The stuff that happens without you consciously thinking about it, like breathing or digestion.

The ANS has two branches::

  1. The parasympathetic is also known as resting and digestive mode.
  2. The sympathetic is the fight or flight mode.

These two work like a seesaw. Whenever one of the modes is activated, the other is not activated. When one is up, the other is down.

Unfortunately, your body cannot differentiate between different types of stress.

When the sympathetic nervous system is upregulated, it can't tell the difference between the stress of a life-threatening event, challenging workout, or the asshole that just cut you off in traffic.

To deal with stress, we want to spend most of our time in a parasympathetic state. However, the reality is that we spend too much time in a personable state. The uninterrupted flood of stress adds up when we face daily challenges.

This sympathetic state has many negative health effects and inhibits our ability to build lean muscles and reduce body fat.

In my experience, so many hard-gainers have difficulty seeing progress because they are chronically stressed and are working to manage stress, which increases their anxiety and creates a downward spiral.

Instead of winning hard, I refer to these people as easy losers.

Their stress levels cause them to lose profit at an alarming rate at the slightest change in a routine or a life circumstance because they handle stress badly.

With this in mind, it is time to identify strategies that can be used to control stress as much as possible.

Heart rate monitoring to help manage stress

A good indicator of your stress level and your parasympathetic versus sympathetic dominance is your waking heart rate.

By monitoring your heart rate, you can get useful data that can help you assess your general stress status and determine when it is increasing.

Significant increases or decreases in your waking heart rate indicate when you are experiencing higher periods of stress. I suggest you get a decent heart rate monitor to assess this. You can also examine heart rate variability apps to add another tier of rating.

Be more productive with less stress

Cal Newport talks about how the autopilot can help you be more productive and less stressed. He says that there are two types of work in his world:

  1. Regularly occurring tasks

  2. Tasks that do not occur regularly

Being autopilot applies to almost everyone.

The problem with tasks that occur regularly is that they are so numerous that if we try to manage them on the fly, we get left behind and overwhelmed.

I believe that feeling of being overwhelmed is one of the main drivers of stress in people's lives. It is certainly a major cause of mine.

To cope with this, Newport assigns a specific time slot to each regularly occurring task. He calls this his autopilot schedule. He found that he doesn't waste time or energy prioritizing and planning tasks on a daily basis. You're on autopilot.

Once you've assigned this stuff to specific times and made it a routine, you can assign any other available times to other things that interest you. This method requires some advance planning, but it pays off.

The last point is to understand that it will take time to refine and adjust this process.

Fortunately, you're so much more efficient that you have the time to make adjustments as needed.

The miracle morning routine for positivity

When you have a morning routine to start your day, you are on the right foot and set the scene for the rest of the day.

You can run the day instead of the day you run.

I am a supporter of the Miracle Morning Routine. I'm doing the express version, which takes less than 15 minutes and has six steps.

The six steps are::

  1. remain silent

  2. Affirmations

  3. Visualizations

  4. exercise

  5. read

  6. Write

Various apps are available to walk you through the process.

If I stick to the Miracle Morning routine, I will be more productive and feel in control.

Meditation combats stress

Meditation is a great way to combat stress. I haven't gone full muesli yogi yet. When I get a little older, I may fully embrace Zen.

I am aware that the word meditation has negative connotations in some people (my cereal yogi reference is a case in point). So if you're not ready to think about meditation, call it silence, chillaxing, mindfulness, or whatever makes you comfortable.

Instead of fully meditating, I sit quietly and concentrate on my breath for a few minutes.

Abdominal breathing, breathing deeply through your nose and slowly exhaling through your mouth do the trick.

If you want a guide, the Headspace app is excellent. I did some of the 5-10 minute guided meditations and it definitely calms you down. Those few minutes a day have a remarkable effect on managing your stress levels.

Mindfulness

Being mindful or present is all the rage these days.

There's a good reason for that. We live in an always connected, yet very distracted world. The sheer amount of input competing for our attention is mind-boggling.

Living in this always distracted state is stressful and is similar to attention deficit disorder (ADD).

Try to fix this:

  • By focusing on one task at a time
  • Then try to be present during this task.
  • Immerse yourself in the sounds, smells, sensations, images and tastes of everything you do.

It doesn't matter whether you keep a diary in your leather-bound notepad while you have a coffee, hang out with friends over a barbecue or write the sales pitch in front of your laptop in the office.

When you are fully in the moment, you will become more productive, efficient, and effective in everything you do. It will help improve your mood and filter out potential external stressors.

Emotional responses last 90 seconds

In his book The Chimp Paradox, Dr. Steve Peters on our chimpanzee brain and how it can control us. When the chimpanzee takes over, the logic evaporates and the emotions take over. Too often when we are under stress we act emotionally. The chimpanzee in us becomes irritable and can wreak havoc before we know what happened.

When we get an emotional reaction to something, it usually wears off after about 90 seconds if we don't respond to it.

Pema Chodron talks about it in the book "Living beautifully: With uncertainty and change".

Emotions will drain and drain. In stressful situations, they can rise up inside you like a tsunami. It's only natural. The best way to deal with stress and keep it under control seems to be to accept the emotions. To feel it. But don't act on them. If you act on them, you add fuel to their fire. They will rage higher and longer. Instead, let them burn themselves. Then, when you are calm and the logic has returned, think about how you can avoid repeating the situation that put you in a position of stress and brought up negative emotions such as fear, worry, hate or fear.

Take a deep breath

While feeling the emotions, it may be a good idea to inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale through your mouth.

This deep breathing has an incredibly calming effect on your body. In my experience, it can help speed the reduction of negative emotions when they occur.

A side effect of stress is shallow breathing.

Shallow breathing interferes with proper oxygenation to cells and reduces your body's ability to recover.

Given that I love to say, "You don't get heavy weights, you make a big recovery from lifting weights."

I've said it twice in this article, so it should be obvious why I believe that if you get stuck in a stressed, shallow state of breathing, it will limit your gains.

Tip for recovery after exercise: With a few simple breathing exercises you can switch from combat or flight mode to rest and digestion mode after training.

This breathing immediately reduces stress, increases the oxygen supply to the cells and accelerates the recovery processes. Exercising in the evening will also help you relax and fall asleep.

Sleep is the most powerful recovery tool available to you. It is therefore of vital importance!

Breathing exercises can also be useful as a proactive stress management tool when done daily. As I mentioned before, I try for a few minutes every morning. It creates a wonderfully calm feeling. I would never claim to be calm, but this is probably the next thing I feel.

Gain perspective

Is it that bad what challenges you? Most of the things we worry about are not that important. It is rarely life or death, or it leads us to financial ruin.

Sit back, take stock, and ask yourself, "What's the worst that can happen?"? "

Often you can gain perspective, look at the stressor objectively and place its meaning appropriately in the hierarchy of events, needs, desires or stresses in your life.

Then nine times out of ten you will relax and find that you unnecessarily twisted your knickers.

Phone addiction

What do you instinctively do while waiting for a train or a queue? Most of us reach for our cell phones. This dependency for our phone wasn't the case 10 to 12 years ago. We'd have to wait – just preoccupied with our thoughts or maybe the conversation has started with a stranger waiting next to us (conversations with real people, in person – that's strange).

We have lost the art of patience, waiting and thinking.

Boredom is a thing of the past. There's always a notification, something on social media, YouTube, or Netflix to keep us entertained. We are still joining the matrix and we seem unable to extract ourselves.

Smartphones have many advantages (don't get me wrong, smartphones are amazing). The downside is that we have become slaves to them.

Our phones increase our stress and anxiety and help us achieve a personable state.

Try to take some time – some kind of digital detox. Turning off / on airplane mode can reduce stress and anxiety. It can also enable you to achieve the mindfulness and presence that I discussed earlier.

It is not easy to take time for our phones. Smartphones are addicting! I have problems with this, but I know that when the phone is out of sight, when I'm at work or out with family, I'm less stressed, more productive, and happier. This struggle also applies to those I am with. Start small and build time.

Some ideas to control the usage of your phone are:::

  • Don't check for the first 30 minutes of your day.

  • If you are doing important work, please switch it to airplane mode and set a timer for how long the work task should last. Don't look at your phone until the time is up.

  • No smartphones with meals

  • Put your phone in a different room at home so you don't get distracted by it.

  • Are you watching TV with your wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend, friends, family, cat or dog? Keep the phone out of sight. Enjoy doing what you do and the fact that the phone doesn't distract you.

  • Set up restricted areas. Whether it's physical (e.g. not in the bedroom) or time zones (e.g. not using the phone for the first hour after getting home from work), this rule improves the quality of your relationships to important other people.

  • Set a good example. If you want to be less distracted when spending time with your partner, the first thing you should do is consciously be less distracted. Then, when you suggest that they do the same, they are more likely to respect and value your opinion. Trying to impose it on them before you have achieved it will meet with resistance.

Fauna Audio Glasses Review: Don’t Sound Great, Hard to Hate

Optical wearable technology is in a strange place that I think comes from consumers who aren't sure what they are or should be. Google Glass, probably the most famous smart glasses, has failed. In a more focused branch of this type of wearable, Bose – the next biggest name in the segment – is said to have left the audio eyewear market unceremoniously in early 2020, but recently announced several new pairs. The prices and availability of these products have not yet been announced, however, and right now Fauna is one of the few players currently active in the audio glasses game.

The company's product, also known as Fauna, is simple enough: glasses that look good and act as listening devices. However, the biggest hurdle for someone could be asking why Fauna has any number of headphone or earphone options. In addition, at 200 euros at the introductory price (20% less than the full 250 euros) they are not a small investment that can be easily picked up and tried out. People understand the need for earbuds, but are they going to get audio glasses?

Let's take a look at the fauna they want to be and answer whether they are good at it or not.

More than a feeling

From the box to the feeling they have on your head, the fauna is absolutely aesthetic. The orange / pink branding on their website carries over onto the packaging and looks really chic. The same orange / pink is a nice accent on the charging case and the included USB-C cable. The outside of the case is mostly dark green, which looks nice and doesn't attract too much attention.

The glasses fit in nicely, although they are not magnetically attached to the charging pins as expected, as this feature is common on earphones. However, you wouldn't expect your normal reading glasses or sunglasses to be magnetically attached to your suitcase. So why should they be here? From this perspective, Fauna did an excellent job with the design.

From the box to the feeling they have on your head, the fauna is absolutely aesthetic.

Back to packaging: I think the importance of good packaging for electronic devices is often underestimated. The Fauna box experience was spot on with Apple's premium packaging, and I can't think of any higher praise for it.

It should also be mentioned that the packaging was made almost entirely of cardboard and paper, with the exception of small plastic sheets that covered the charging contacts. I like packaging that doesn't contain too much plastic and ends up in a landfill. So it's nice to know that almost all fauna ships can be easily recycled or composted.

To look good

The idea that an everyday object could also cross over and be a listening device sounds fascinating. I like the idea of ​​not needing headphones to enjoy media, and the Fauna really delivers it by packing headphone technology into glasses that are just a little heavier than my prescription glasses.

With that in mind, it's quite remarkable how light the fauna is. They clearly crammed a lot more into glasses than typical glasses, but when I wear them I don't feel the extra weight. I loved to wear the fauna for a whole day at work and often forgot that I was wearing it at all.

Maybe this is an opinion exclusive to me, but I think the Fauna goggles look great. I would always wear these well. I can see some people thinking that the sides of the glasses look too thick, but I don't particularly mind. I'm a fan of thicker-rimmed glasses initially, and I think the sides don't look obtrusive or bulky. This thickness is also guaranteed because the drivers are housed there together with the touch controls. More on that later.

The fauna really delivers … by packing headphone technology into glasses that are just a little heavier than my prescription glasses.

The Fauna offers four different styles of glasses that cover almost the entire scope of the thick-framed style. I generally like a more angular frame than any other fauna, but I was pleasantly surprised by how I thought they were looking at me. I think their Memor Havana or Levia Black designs do the best job of not making the thick sides of the glasses seem too obvious. The company's Spiro Transparent Brown and Fabula Crystal Brown both have transparent pieces, making the huge opaque blocks on the sides more prominent.

One of the pairs I rated has a Zeiss blue light filter lens, and this filter makes it easier for my eyes to look at television or computer screens for long periods of time. A second set had the sunglass lens that protects against 99% UVA and UVB light. The quality of the glass is very good in both cases, but if I want I could take it to my optician and have the lenses changed on my prescription.

But how do they sound?

I wish I could keep praising them, but fauna falls short on this one key area – these don't sound very good.

While the Fauna has two MEMs speakers and a dedicated subwoofer over each ear, this implementation of the technology just doesn't result in high quality audio. Despite having six drivers, the quality doesn't match most earbuds with two.

They don't sound bad at all, but they lack a lot of depth in the presentation of music, with the bass feeling being particularly underrepresented. The mids are also weaker than I would like, but the lower registers are the main weakness despite the bass support from Fauna via these special subwoofers. The best way to compare the sound would be to see what 2009 laptop speakers sounded like. If, like me, you were listening to music on your standard speakers back then, you will understand what I mean when I say that music is perceived as "thin". There is no robustness for music from the fauna, and I miss that when I hear almost every track.

These don't sound very good.

I will say that the only type of music that will work with this type of audio quality is the very popular “Lofi Hip Hop Music to Relax / Learn” playlist curated by ChilledCow on both YouTube and Spotify . Because these tracks already have low fidelity, they don't ask the fauna to do too much, and that's why I enjoyed this style of music played by the fauna.

You know what it sounds like to sit in a hotel lobby playing soothing, voiceless tracks? This is what my whole life has sounded like wearing the fauna and I have to say it's pretty beautiful. Chill, sure.

Just as you can't hear lobby music as well because it exists in the background of conversations, the fauna doesn't get particularly loud and makes music you play on them almost background noise. I've been running it at maximum volume the whole time and it always feels just a few decibels quieter than I'd like. If they have to compete with other sounds around you, they will drown very easily.

Strangely enough, while they can't make me feel loud, they really do a good job of stopping me from hearing someone trying to speak to me from more than a meter away. Something about how the speakers project sound specifically blocks human vowel sounds and volume. So, if you're planning on working in a coffee shop (someday, right?), Let the pleasant clatter of that hustle and bustle pass through without distracting you from certain conversations.

Basically, wearing Fauna is like using headphones with ambient noise all the time, but at a lower volume and music quality with lower fidelity, with the advantage that glasses are put on at the same time.

When I switch from Fauna to my Jabra Elite 75t or my Sony WF-1000XM3, the difference in quality is painfully obvious. I don't think the fauna ever intended their audio goggles to go head-to-toe with special earbuds, but the sharp difference in quality due to the distinct lack of support for lower registers in the fauna makes it impossible to recommend these as primary Hearing aids through earphones or headphones.

It should also be noted that these are expected to have pretty terrible noise isolation. If someone is sitting next to you, they can hear what you are hearing pretty clearly, especially since the volume is most likely being maximized.

Battery, connectivity and control

Fauna rates the audio glasses for about four hours of non-stop gaming per charge, which isn't great and feels like what we expected from headphones a few years ago. Nowadays, some companies are increasing battery life to eight or even ten hours. Given that fauna has significantly more room to work than earbuds, it's a little surprising to see estimates this low.

In addition, you can only get four full charges out of the case, which means your maximum usage time is only 16 hours per wall charge. Given that glasses are the kind of item you put on in the morning and wear until you go to bed, the low battery power makes it hard to imagine these glasses taking the place of your earbuds or low vision glasses.

After the initial pairing, these audio glasses establish a solid connection to my iPhone (a process that is identical to all other Bluetooth earbuds, where the glasses switch to pairing mode after being removed from the case and via Bluetooth -Menu can be added in your phone settings). I had no issues with cutouts or drips and even walked my entire yard while my phone was still in my kitchen.

The Fauna supports 20 hours per charge of passive connection time, that is, without playing music.

Do not add further to the complaints, but control with the fauna is not great. First, let me explain how the controls work: Any stretch of the sides about three inches long along your temple line has a touch sensitivity with a variety of functions.

Overall, these controls are not intuitive.

Double tap on the left temple answers a call, ends a call, plays music, or pauses music. Tap and hold to reject a call or skip to the next track. Pushing forward decreases the volume and pushing back increases the volume.

Tapping the right temple twice activates the voice assistant on your phone. Tap and hold to put the glasses into pairing mode.

Overall, these controls are not intuitive and in many cases contrast with years of training that other equipment performed prior to them gave me. Making the pause / play action by tapping twice and skipping rather than tap and hold was an odd decision.

Remembering these controls was a challenging learning curve that only applies to the fauna and no other equipment I have tested. Additionally, sliding forward to lower the volume is an extremely confusing decision. Moving a little forward in my head means increasing the volume and moving backward means decreasing the volume. Why the fauna chose to reverse this hard-wired propensity is astounding.

Other properties

The fauna is successful in one audio area: phone calls. Both you and everyone you speak to will have a wonderful experience, provided you don't maximize the volume. You will hear that the other end is not a problem. If you keep the volume at 70% or less, this will also be the case with whom you are speaking. When you set the volume to maximum, the glasses record their own audio signal and give your listener annoying feedback on their own voice.

I mentioned that these weren't particularly loud at first, so turning the volume down may not sound intuitive. However, it works for phone calls. Even walking down a busy street I could have a great phone call with my friend who reported the same thing to me.

The Fauna app adds a function to the audio glasses that goes beyond audio. The fauna has special warning messages called "whistles" to help remind you to do things like drink water or improve your posture. I like the idea, but the implementation is … strange.

Although referred to as a whistle, the actual warning isn't a whistle, but a robotic male voice that can be programmed to say what's in a text box in the app.

For the whistle, the app sends a notification that says "Hey Jaron, it's time to get up and stretch your body." It's a bit unsettling and I wish I could just have a comfortable chime sent to me instead of a robotic voice. You can record a different voice, but hearing myself may be even stranger than the robot.

There aren't a lot of options in the whistles either, but Fauna has a direct link to their developers on the app if you have an idea you'd like to see which is lovely.

I ended up not using this feature because I personally didn't find it helpful, but others may disagree. Still, it's a good idea.

Our opinion

Fauna placed more emphasis on style than audio quality, but maybe that's not all that bad. While they won't blow you away with their sound, they do their job and provide an overall experience that will keep you coming back time and time again. I complained to my wife about one thing or another and asked her, "Then why do you keep wearing them?"

She's right, I wore her for a week. Despite all of its shortcomings, I still like it.

Are there any better alternatives?

As previously mentioned, Bose recently announced a number of new frames options, but there was no indication of pricing or availability. Hence, it is difficult to say whether it is worth doing without it. In addition, Flows makes glasses with similar aesthetics to Fauna at a lower price, so it may be worth considering.

How long will they last?

The Halo from Kwikset is an intelligent lock that can be controlled with an app, codes or an old-fashioned set of keys. This versatility, paired with super hard hardware, seems to be a winning combination. But while the halo has a lot to offer, there are some shortcomings that make it less practical than it looked at first glance.

installation

The halo is more difficult to install than some locks because you have to take out your current latch and install a new one. Other door locks like the August Smart Lock or the Wyze Lock fit over your existing bolt and make the transition easier. If you're not mechanically inclined (like me), getting the old latch out and inserting the new one can be frustrating.

If you don't need to install a new latch, why should you do that?

Kwikset's instructions even say that you may need a wooden chisel during installation. I'm not sure how many households have a wooden chisel on hand, but I tend to estimate few.

However, my biggest frustration with the installation was due to the app. The quick start guide will ask you to download the app. You will then need to follow the on-screen instructions to install the lock. Paper instructions are not included.

However, I had to switch screens to answer a text. When I got back to the app, she insisted that I go through a long, lengthy account login process. When that was done, I never returned to the installation process. I had to find it again and then try to find the installation screen I was on before the interruption. That seems to me to be a usability error.

The big problem is sensitivity. You need to touch the pad to activate it and then enter your key code. I found that if I didn't enter my code quickly enough within seconds, the pad would fall asleep and wouldn't wake up again. I stood around, tapping the screen impatiently, trying to bring him back to life for a minute or two. If you're in a hurry to get in, this is a no-go.

In addition, the keyboard clearly shows fingerprints. This means that a potential crook can look at the pattern of fingerprints on the touchpad and find your code easily. I tried wiping the touchpad after use, but who will really clean the lock every time they use it?

One feature I like is that you can use the app to turn off the keyboard completely. You can then use your keys or the app to control the locking and unlocking of your door. It undermines the sense of an intelligent lock with a keyboard, but that shows you how much I don't like the Halo keyboard.

Too bad, because this lock can store up to 250 user codes, including time limits and expiration dates, which you can control via the app. I can see where that would be useful.

The alarm didn't work

One of the features I liked when I first heard about the Halo is that an alarm sounds when the code is entered incorrectly three times. This would let you know immediately if someone tried to find out your code and break into your home.

So I tried it in the interest of science. I entered three random codes and nothing happened to my dismay. There was no alarm. No notification appeared on my phone. Other attempts have also not triggered an alarm.

I contacted the company's support team and they were informed that the batteries may be weak or the connection may become loose. Neither seemed to be the cause. As far as I can tell, the function just doesn't work as an advertisement.

The Kwikset Halo is disappointing. The keyboard is tedious and installing a new latch is a big problem. At $ 229, other smart locks are cheaper and work better.
