Eero 6 Router Review: Smart Home Management Made Easy

Eero 6 Wi-Fi Mesh Router

Eero 6 Wi-Fi 6 System (3 Pack)

"When a growing smart home needs to be covered, the Eero 6 is a cost-effective solution."

  • Affordable Wi-Fi 6 mesh system

  • Intuitive device management via app

  • Solid speeds from the router

  • Few ethernet ports on the router

Routers are likely a priority for many people. It's one of those underrated devices in the home that only works in the background, and the only time it ever comes to mind is when things aren't working properly.

A growing smart home presents some challenges as more and more devices require connectivity. This is why you should look into a router that can manage them all. With Wi-Fi 6, an integrated mesh network and a system that can be controlled with Alexa from Amazon, the Eero 6 is undoubtedly an attractive option for the average consumer.

Cover for the whole house

Growing your smart home includes not just the devices, but adequate coverage to ensure they stay connected and are not compromised in any way. The Eero 6 is a dual band Wi-Fi 6 mesh network that allows you to provision extender nodes to cover large rooms. For smaller spaces like my apartment, which is a smidge over 1,000 square feet, the Eero 6 is a bit over the top – but others will appreciate its 5,000 square foot range for larger homes and rooms.

John Velasco / Digital Trends

In my setup, the system packs a router and two extender nodes. I use it as a secondary, complementary network that contains my Internet of Things (IoT devices). My main network serves as the primary network for surfing the Internet with my smartphones and computers. Similar to other mesh routers I've checked out, the Eero router is connected to my modem gateway via one of its two gigabit ports. If you urgently need to make other connections, there isn't much left. I know how quickly things can get out of hand when you introduce smart home devices that require their own hubs or bridges. So it would have been nice to have more ports.

This is exactly what the growing smart home needs.

The extender nodes only act as Wi-Fi hubs to extend the range of the network to every corner of your home. Depending on the signal strength, I like that the Eero 6 automatically selects which node / router the devices are connected to. For example, the two smart displays in my bedroom connect to the extender node, which is in the same room – unlike the main router in the living room. In contrast to the router, the node extenders do not have any Ethernet ports for expansion. Not too surprising, but I still wish they had one or two.

Convenient smart home management

Today's routers are more consumer-friendly than ever, and the Eero 6 is no exception. Setting up is a breeze and all it takes is plugging the router into my gateway and downloading the Eero app. From there, you can attach it to your Amazon account to access voice control with Alexa.

The app does a good job of figuring out which devices are connected to the Eero 6. Since the naming conventions for some devices can be unclear, I would recommend going back to the app as soon as possible to change them. My smart home consists of more than 50 connected devices. So it helps that I oversee their activities, especially if you notice that a gadget appears to be sending larger amounts of data. It's a red flag that will help users better understand how their devices are behaving.

When it comes to the smart home, disabling access to a specific device is made easier with the help of Alexa. Once you've enabled the Eero Alexa skill, you can instruct the voice assistant to stop WiFi for a specific device or the entire network.

It's worth noting that the Eero 6 has an integrated ZigBee smart home hub, similar to the current Amazon Echo (4th generation). This makes it a breeze to connect ZigBee-enabled accessories and devices through the Alexa app without the need to use other third-party apps. That way, you don't have to manage another app or service. So, if you're already deep in the Amazon ecosystem, the Eero 6's ability to control ZigBee devices comes in handy.

Speed, speed, speed

The Comcast Xfinity router I've been using for a while now offers average download and upload speeds of 250Mbps and 40Mbps, respectively. Interestingly, switching to the Eero 6 has boosted performance to around 350 Mbit / s and 41 Mbit / s. The faster download speed is only achieved through the main Eero 6 router.

Eero 6 Wi-Fi Mesh RouterJohn Velasco / Digital Trends

However, when connected to one of the extender nodes, the performance will drop to about the same as my Xfinity router. For most smart home devices, this shouldn't be a problem, unless it's a security camera that uploads footage to the cloud for you to access. The latency response via the extender nodes is roughly the same as that of the main Eero router. This is therefore useful for real-time video conversations that you may have on a smart display, security camera, or other device.

Our opinion

You can't go wrong with the Eero 6 – this is exactly what the growing smart home needs to keep expanding. It has it all: a built-in ZigBee hub, expansion with extenders, device management, Alexa control, and an affordable price of $ 279 for a 3-pack system. For comparison, a similar Google Nest Wi-Fi kit costs $ 349. However, what Google has to offer is the additional utility of its Node Extenders that use Google Assistant for voice control so that they can effectively act as smart speakers.

How long it will take?

The minimalist all-plastic construction of the Eero 6 feels decent. However, since they are unlikely to ever move once they are set up, there is little risk of damage to them. In the event something goes wrong on its own, there's a 1 year limited warranty to cover it.

Is there a better alternative?

Yes and no. The Google Nest Wi-Fi costs more, but the added convenience of the Google Assistant built into its extender nodes makes it a useful utility for the smart home.

Should you buy it?

This is a good option if you are looking for a mesh network system that does not require an expensive investment.

Hydrow Review – Total Body Home Happiness

Hydrow Review - Full Body Happiness At Home - Reviews, Rowing, Endurance, Indoor Rowing, Strength, Technique, Home Workouts, Full Body Workouts At Home, Staying Fit At Home, Hydrow

Full Disclosure: This won't compare the Hydrow home rowing system to a Concept 2 rowing machine, which most readers of Breaking Muscle are probably most familiar with. They are two completely different systems, and we'll be putting them both in a comparative summary before Christmas. This is a review of a standalone home exercise system, and not a complement to anything else. This means that I assessed how the Hydrow shapes up as a total package, assuming it would be the center of a home exercise program. I've been open about this, although I have to make a few confessions: I don't like bikes or treadmills because, as a cyclist and occasional runner, I prefer to do these things in the real world and not be restricted by the country or weather around me.

Rowing uses 84% of your body's muscles, far more than most other aerobic exercise.

Eric Stevens, broken muscle

And I think the best bang for your buck is always going to get as close as possible to a full body solution. Rowing is just the thing in every way. In all fairness, most of us will never have a boat or skull, or access to an appropriate waterway, let alone the necessary skill or ability to maneuver one on our own. While you don't need a lot of skill or instruction to ride a bike or walk, rowing is an acquired skill that also adds to its appeal.

At a glance
product Hydrow rowing machine
benefits Sleek design, a strong user experience, and an impressive group of teachers make it fun, challenging, and engaging. The quiet electromagnetic resistance mechanism ensures even tension for a unique rowing experience indoors.
disadvantage It doesn't appeal to every budget and requires a membership card.

Great fitness technology comes at a price

The hydrow is the rudder's answer to peloton motorcycles, insofar as it is designed and where it fits in the industry. However, I have a lot of comments on the pricing of a Hydrow rowing machine (currently $ 1,995 with discounts) versus a Concept 2 (the Model D is $ 900 before shipping and tax) or a NordicTrack RW900 ($ 1,599 before Shipping) seen and taxes). It's true you can get cheaper indoor rowers, but Hydrow is one of the emerging hybrid technology creations that is taking the fitness world by storm, making it part of a new category of equipment. It's no surprise that the Hydrow comes with a 22-inch screen, electromagnetic resistance mechanism, and most importantly, networked software and infrastructure that supports perfectly coordinated row-along workouts with top-notch instructors on the water. It's chic design and high production values for hardware, software, and content.

It goes without saying that the software that Hydrow supports is a tech boost in its own right and shouldn't be discounted as if you were signing up for a YouTube channel. It is a fully functional SaaS (Software as a Service) application that is scalable for a large audience. If the weight of the software is insufficient, the hardware itself is approximately 30 kg and measures 86 x 25 x 47 inches.

The hydrow may be shiny, but it is also surprisingly firm; The aluminum and steel frame can accommodate a person weighing 375 pounds, while NordicTrack has a maximum of 250 pounds and a Peloton bike has a maximum of 297 pounds. Would it be nice if the hydrow hit the 500 pound mark of a Model D? Sure, but kudos to the Hydrow engineers for outperforming their direct competition.

Improve rowing tips

  1. Don't grip too tightly
  2. Ride your legs
  3. Go straight back
  4. Don't let your butt go alone
  5. Don't pull with your arms
  6. Keep your elbows relaxed
  7. Don't shrug
  8. Always sit up
  9. Don't bend your knees too soon
  10. Focus on steady movement

The Hydrow's 22-inch screen is clear and sharp, even in direct light. It swivels so you can still see the screen once you've settled down for floor exercises, and it has a great software interface. Again, some users have noticed the similarity to the Peloton UI, but honestly that's not a problem as most of the fitness apps these days are pretty close to each other, which is moving through screens, finding workouts, selecting instructors, and that Search concerns. And a good thing too, because it works.

If you know how to lift weights properly, you will know how to row.

Ellen Tomek, Olympic rower

It's also worth noting that Hydrow, the company, has raised $ 52 million in investment and the money is up there on the screen and in the design of the product. The user experience is unique and everything from the seat design to the feeling of resistance feels like a premium product. Your instructors are on the water, your pace and pace need to be synchronized, your rowing experience is enhanced by the graphics, and the controls are never hampered or superfluous. This is a well thought out product with few weaknesses.

If there was one fear I had in getting involved with the Hydrow, it was the potential liabilities of long term maintenance. This is not a product that you can disassemble and oil and repair yourself. Time will tell how this affects users, but it's not uncommon to feel that pain of fear when you've invested heavily in something like this.

Home exercise gets better with help

If you are one of those people who are disciplined or advanced enough to do things on your own, the hydrow can be frustrating for you as it is best consumed as a guided experience. You can't ignore the screen or software and walk alone. Participating in the community isn't a must, but you get immersed in what other people are doing when you see their activity in rows with you or in a nice little feed that shows who finished a row and how they're doing have behaved. It's optional to share, but it works on a visceral level, engaging you, and making you feel like you are part of a group of fellow enthusiasts. You can filter the results by age and gender and this can be quite a motivating factor.

The best part, however, are the instructors. You have real rowers, you have a skull or two and oars on a body of water with bridges and boats and a real landscape. In one training session, I saw that the instructor had to adjust after getting too close to the walls of a tunnel under a bridge. You will feel like you are part of an experience on the water even if you are as cynical as I am. However, what really impressed me was the fact that the intimacy of the class forces you to maintain good technique. Your instructor is right in front of you, a skilled rower, and you can't whirl around or mess your own shape unless you turn off the sound and close your eyes.

Each row is different and can be a Zen experience as well as a challenge. The emphasis on shape and consistency is a constant challenge even for the best rowers. If you've experienced rowing at a typical boxing gym without the following instructions, the Hydrow experience is a revelation that makes you feel as close to the water as possible. I'm sure this may be an exaggeration for real rowers, but I can only talk about how I felt like someone who hasn't rowed on the water but is now itchy to try it out sometime. I don't know if indoor bikes and treadmills offer the same level of immersion. I received the Hydrow experience as a reviewer on these sites and have become a believer.

How To Do A Facial Massage At Home

If you've ever admired your skin after a treatment and thought, "That but glow! ", we will let you in on a little secret. One of the keys to a radiant, timeless complexion is a well-performed facial massage. Massaging the face not only relieves tension, but also promotes blood circulation, gives your skin an immediate boost and even helps that your products will absorb better. Read on to learn more about the benefits of facial massage and how to treat yourself to one at home.

What is facial massage?

With roots in China, Mexico, Hungary and Sweden, facial massage has developed a lot over the years. Eminence Organics International trainer Brian Goodwin Says, "Therapeutic massage began about 4,500 years ago and has expanded to include the discovery of face-lifting massage, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, the Swedish style and other techniques." Facial massage applies the principles of body massage to the muscles of the face. Not only does this reduce facial tension (which leads to fine lines and wrinkles), it also increases blood and lymph circulation to help rejuvenate the skin.

Benefits of facial massage

As Brian says, "The real benefits of massage are in massaging what's under the skin." He compares the structure of the skin to a house: it has a roof (epidermal tissue), a framework (skin tissue) and a foundation (subcutaneous tissue, fat and muscle tissue). Skin problems and conditions don't just affect the roof. Rather, they extend to the foundation. When we apply active and targeted pressure on the facial muscles, we can treat skin conditions from the foundation, which leads to better and longer-lasting results.

Structure of the skin infographic

Here is a closer look at the benefits of facial massage for the skin.

Increases blood circulation

ONE The 2018 study found that stimulating the skin with a five-minute facial massage increased blood flow for up to 10 minutes. Better blood circulation goes hand in hand with more oxygen and nutrients – both of which are important for the skin to perform important functions.

The short-term result of increased blood flow is an instant glow. When blood rises to the surface, the skin radiates from the inside out. The long-term result is greater and more efficient collagen and elastin production. Over time, this contributes to a stronger and more resilient complexion.

Activates the lymphatic system

The lymphatic system acts as the body's garbage disposal: it helps remove waste and toxins from body tissues, including the skin. But as Brian explains, "Our lifestyle tends to keep the lymphatic system from doing its job because our life is stagnant." When things get sluggish, toxins build up and block our lymph nodes, making the skin look puffy.

Lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage technique that encourages the movement of lymph fluids throughout the body. This type of massage targets the lymph nodes under the ears and neck, helping to drain toxins and remove excess waste. This in turn minimizes swelling and helps to "deflate" the skin.

Lifts & plump skin

We have a lot of tension on our faces, from furrowed brows to pursed lips and clenched jaws. When the muscles under our skin (almost 43 to be precise) are young and strong, they can quickly recover from facial tension. However, Brian explains, “These muscles lose their tone over time and the foundation begins to slide. When the foundation slips off, cheeks form, loosening the tissue around the eyes and making the entire face slack. “As those wrinkles deepen, fine lines and wrinkles can also develop (see you, forehead lines).

These muscles lose tone over time and the foundation begins to slide. When the foundation slips off, cheeks form, loosening the tissues around the eyes and making the entire face slack.

The facial massage works like a non-surgical face lift and helps to tighten the muscles under the skin. Like the rest of the body, the more you exercise these muscles, the stronger they get. Over time, facial massage (and even Facial Yoga) can improve skin firmness and resilience, helping to smooth out wrinkles and keep them toned, firm and toned.

Improves product intake

Massage also helps increase the penetration of the active ingredients in your preferred skin care regimen. The heat generated by the warmth of your hands and the activation of the facial muscles makes the skin more accessible for product absorption. This increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the key ingredients as they can more easily get into the deeper layers of the skin (the foundation) to address specific skin problems and conditions.

How to do facial massage at home

Convinced? Follow these facial massage steps to indulge yourself at home.

1. Clean your hands and face

Always (Always start with a clean base. Prep your skin by cleaning and removing all makeup. And make sure your hands are clean so you don't transfer bacteria to your newly cleaned complexion. The last thing you want is to massage dirt and grime back into your skin.

2. Warm product in hands

The key to a successful facial massage is slip. You never want to feel like you're pulling or pulling on your skin. A small amount Serum, oil or concentrate help your fingers to move more gently over your face – and ensure that the active ingredients reach the deepest layers of the skin. Simply apply a small amount of the product to your palms and rub the formula to evenly distribute it on your hands and fingertips. Our choice: Rose Hips Triple C + E Firming Oil. Or combine the massage with the cleansing step and choose our Stone Crop Cleansing Oil.

3. Use light but firm pressure

You want to apply enough pressure to really feel and move the muscles under the skin. Brian advises, "When you massage, work with muscles, not just the surface of your skin, and apply pressure in a targeted manner." That means don't go too hard for your skin. A facial massage is not a deep tissue massage: apply firm pressure but keep it gentle.

When it comes to massage, work with muscles, not just the surface of the skin, and apply targeted pressure.

4. Start massaging the lymphatic area

Start by activating your lymphatic system. Use your fingertips to massage the lymph nodes under your ears and on the sides of your neck. Use wide circles sticking out from under your ears, towards your neck, and back down your jaw. This encourages the buildup that causes you to feel puffy or puffy to keep moving.

5. Knead the sides of your face

Next, aim for the sides of your face. Using circular motions, massage the circumference of your face along the sides of your jaw and over your cheekbones. Remember to push your skin up and out – not down. This will help lift sagging skin and prevent the skin from drooping any further. Repeat this process for two to three minutes, focusing on the areas where you are most tensioned (usually around the jaw).

Facial massage steps infographic

6. Smooth forehead lines

Now for those annoying forehead lines. Press your fingers between your browbones and slowly slide them across your forehead. Repeat this movement over your forehead, gently pulling the skin up and out. Massaging against the lines (rather than with them) will help smooth them out in the right direction.

7. Be extra careful around the eyes

Next is the eye area. As always, be extremely sensitive to this area where the skin is thinner and more fragile. Position your fingers on either side of your nose and gently guide them up towards your temples. This action helps fight puffiness, lift sagging skin, and wake up the eye area.

8. Finish with your neck & décolleté

Finally, aim for your neck and cleavage. Using light vertical strokes, massage the skin from the chest over the neck to the jaw. This will help reactivate the lymphatic system and smooth out any fine lines that have built up in this often neglected area.

Discover Face Yoga at home

After enjoying a facial massage, you can also try facial yoga to get blood flow to this area. To release some tension from your upper body, pull your shoulders down to relax. Then, using your fingertips, gently smooth them down your forehead to your temples. Take deep breaths in and out as you apply this gentle pressure as your knuckles cross your forehead. You can do this four or five times, or until you relax. Take three fingers, reach for the temple on the opposite side and tap it gently.

Another facial yoga movement is to stretch our necks. Start by straightening your head, relaxing your shoulders, and raising your hand up and up to reach the opposite side of your head. With your fingers on the opposite side of your head, gently straighten your neck and shoulders and hold for three seconds. Repeat on the other side.

Try this pucker lips exercise

That is fun! You want to pucker your lips left and then right, with your head following the direction of your lips. As you turn your lips to the left, start by turning your head as well and lifting it up at a 45-degree angle. Hold this position for three seconds. Repeat on the right side, rotating your lips and head to the right, keeping your head at a 45 degree angle. Hold for three seconds. Repeat this exercise about five times.

Treat yourself to an eye massage

Take two fingers and circle under and around the eyes over the forehead area, pausing at the temples. You can do this five times. For another eye exercise, place your index finger on your upper lip and your middle finger under your lower lip. Then return to the temple and repeat five times on each side.

Relax with a forehead massage

Sweep ten fingers up to your temple five times on each side. Place your fingertips around your eyes and brush your fingers down to the hairline. Finally, slide your fingers over your face and neck. Another alternative is to slide up the side of the neck as well.

Should I use massage tools?

You can certainly use devices like jade rollers and gua sha to do your facial massage, but we're partially interested in using the hands. This allows for better control over the pressure and the ability to use your fingers to capture particularly tense areas. The exception: your eye area. A cool jade roller – or our stainless steel roller Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream – Can work wonders for puffy, tired eyes. Just put it in the refrigerator before applying for a super soothing eye treatment.

Here's how to add a massage to your skin care routine

The secret to long-term results is getting a regular facial massage. Beauty experts recommend adding a facial massage to your skin regimen two to three times a week. This can be helpful in promoting blood circulation, relieving tension, and lifting and tightening your complexion over time. Whether you choose your morning or night routine is up to you. We recommend adding extra strength to your skin before bed (after all, it performs most of its key functions while you sleep).

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit Review: Fun For Some Ages

Mario Kart Live Home Circuit Review

Mario Kart Live: home track

"A full grid of annoyances is forcing Home Circuit from a sweet drift to a disappointing spin."

  • The kart is well done

  • It's a pleasure to set up (the first time)

  • The effects are visually fun

  • No shortage of content

  • AR tracking is mediocre

  • Limited course options

  • The gameplay lacks depth

The place for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit is wonderful. Perhaps the most popular racing franchise in the entire gaming space, Mario Kart brings it to your living room with a real, physical kart that can move under tables and around chairs. This kart has a camera that provides an AR racing experience through a wireless connection to your Nintendo Switch. Suddenly every room in your house is a race track.

Unfortunately, Home Circuit doesn't work as well as the promotional videos suggest, but it does provide a fun and engaging experience at times that is content for even the die-hard fans of the show. However, like many Nintendo peripherals, it will likely start collecting dust in memory soon after a handful of playthroughs.

Home Circuit is great for a while

Opening the Home Circuit Box was pure, nostalgic joy. The toy kart impressed me with its workmanship and compactness. It's a toy, yes, but one that justifies its $ 100 price tag, especially when you start driving with it.

Mario Kart toy car

After you've downloaded the software from the eShop and used an on-screen QR code to pair the kart with your Switch, you're good to go. Driving feels incredibly responsive and the tight turns required to navigate small distances are surprisingly possible even at higher speeds.

The game finally offers a use for leftover Labo cardboard as you have to set up four colored gates around your room to form control points on a track. According to Nintendo, the track size can extend to 15 by 15 feet. After trying to push the size and design to the limit for the week I had the game, I can confirm that you don't want to build any bigger circuits than that. They may look impressive, but they definitely affect the gameplay.

Once the gates have been placed, you can design the track between them as you wish and use the kart to lay out the layout. I have a pretty narrow but long apartment, so I split myself into two rooms and let the kart go under the couch and table for many stretches. The kart ran fine when you drove from the hardwood floor to the carpet under my table, although you need to make sure there are no creases or wrinkles on a similar surface. My carpet became an unintended obstruction if it was curled up too tightly.

Depending on the size of your room, you may need to adjust some directions and spacing of the gates, although you should be able to create a trail even in a very small space. Jumping and piloting the toy kart in the first few races was like any other modern Mario Kart game. Using items and using items against you is snappy and gratifying.

The longer you play, the worse it gets

It is undoubtedly awesome to have a miniature Mario flying around your house, but you may not notice it because your attention needs to be on the game. The spectators can watch the kart at work. I'm sure families will happily get together to see the kart (at least once or twice). However, I quickly discovered that the kart was becoming invisible to the player.

Elemental Effects and Gate Modifiers add enhancements to the gameplay that attempt to reproduce the thrill of other Mario Kart titles, but the races are short and the consequences are not varied. Mario could be frozen by blocks of ice, stuck in puddles of lava, or snapped up by a piranha plant, but in all cases the result is the same: the kart stops. I kept stalling, and it didn't matter how it actually happened.

There are more sophisticated effects such as: B. blowing around in a sandstorm or pulling in different directions through a chain chomp. However, since there is no penalty for leaving the track limits, they don't really hinder your progress. I've learned to ignore them.

It's good that the game doesn't penalize the racer for cornering or leaving the track limits, as the augmented reality circuit keeps shifting and adjusting while driving. The course you set up at the start of the race looks different than the one you take. The game's AR tracking isn't terrible, but it could certainly be better, and it's weird to see the tracks shift slightly as you play.

I drove the kart into bigger rooms, hoping that more light for the camera and more space for the vehicle would alleviate my problems, but it didn't help much. Neither my friend's spacious roof nor a colleague's large performance room provided the experience I was looking for. The races still ended too quickly even on the biggest tracks. The only benefit of shorter runs is that you are never too far ahead of the pack to take it easy, so the races will stay tense until the end.

I wondered if I could use some pieces of cardboard to ramps up to my coffee table and create circuits with height differences, but I ran into two problems. The first was that when changing elevation, AR tracking didn't work well because it could only be played on a flat plane, so the track shifted even more than usual during the game. Also, the kart itself doesn't have the power to do anything other than a very slight incline. I tried gradually building ramps to counter this issue but this quickly became a requirement.

Despite all of its problems, I still played a lot with the kart and hit the entire course of the cups at speeds of 50 and 100 cc. I am now making my way through 150cc, although sometimes depending on the course this can be too fast to navigate my space.

Our opinion

There's a solid Mario Kart game at its core here, and I hope the environment and gate effects for the correct ninth episode carry over to the main series, as I think these additions could add something to the franchise.

Even so, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit has too many small annoyances that can only be mitigated by a perfectly sized, perfectly lit room – like in Nintendo's promotional materials. This may still be a hit with kids, or anyone less interested in Home Circuit as a game than a toy, but anyone hoping for depth or repeating the game will be disappointed.

Is there a better alternative?

For those who don't have space and don't have a strong craving for the novelty of the toy kart, it's best to stick with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe until the next installment.

How long it will take?

Once you've run through the Grand Prix a few times, there's little incentive to keep playing.

Should you buy it?

If you have kids and a switch this will be a hit with them on this vacation. If you're hoping for a real AR game that will keep you entertained for hours, you've got your wallet in your pocket.

Things To Consider When Buying Weights For Home Use

The convenience of exercising in your familiar home is one of the advantages of purchasing your own fitness and exercise equipment. It's also a worthwhile investment in your health. Good weights and exercise equipment aren't cheap, but they're also supposed to be durable and have a long life. It is also for your own safety to buy equipment that is solid and cannot break or malfunction with regular or heavy use. The following considerations and steps can help you make informed decisions about investing in weights and equipment to build or upgrade your home gym.

Assess your fitness goals and needs

Be realistic about what your short-term and long-term training goals are. This will help you determine what weights you will need for your exercise routines. If you want to focus on weight training, do research on weight machines specifically designed for bloating, slimming, increasing endurance, or a combination of goals.

Which weights are right for you?

Strength training weights come in a variety of shapes and styles. Consider the different types of weights, from weight plates to kettlebells. A multipurpose barbell set can be useful and can be supplemented with a set of simple dumbbells. You can mix and match as you wish, then opt for other factors to personalize your weight tracking.

  • Fixed or adjustable: Fixed weights are sturdy, simple and effective, but the weight cannot be adjusted and they can take up much more space. Adjustable can save space and can be changed as you increase your strength.
  • Round or hexagonal shape: Round weights can be more comfortable as they have no edges, but hexagonal weights don't roll around. It's a matter of personal preference and sometimes experimenting with both can help you decide.

Weight material

As for the material, quality weights are always made of steel, but there are two popular skin materials to choose from:

  • Rubberized weights have a rubber layer on the outside that makes it easier to grip, safer to use, and less loud when dropped on the floor. The only downside is that the rubber material can crack or wear out over time and with heavy use.
  • Bare or "bare" steel is a more traditional, industrial look that you may prefer. Bare steel weights have no additional coating other than possibly an anti-rust coating.

Know your strength

Wherever you're reaching your training goals, whether you've been training for a while or are just starting out, knowing how much you can realistically lift without overdoing it is important. This baseline will give you a better idea of which weight range to buy. You can always invest in more weights as your strength increases and you make progress in your training. Try not to overestimate or underestimate your strength. Be goal oriented and push yourself forward, but also be aware of your limits and don't take on too much too quickly. This will also stagger the amount of money you spend on weights. You don't need everything at once.

Take accurate measurements

Measure the space you will use for lifting and exercising, and create a rough floor plan to determine the designated area for your home gym. In addition to being heavy, weights take up a lot of space depending on the type of equipment you're buying. You want to optimize and maximize the space you have to exercise, with enough space to move around and not feel cramped or restricted in your freedom of movement. Once you have an idea of what will comfortably fit in your floor plan, check out the dimensions and weights of the equipment that you are interested in. Most importantly, make sure that what you are buying is the right size for your height and body.

Select Based on Efficiency

Weights and items such as benches can be multifunctional and used interchangeably with other devices. You can spend less money and take up less space with equipment that is more versatile and compatible with other weights and parts. If you want to use a cross-functional fitness kit that will allow you to train your entire body, there are a few options available to you:

  • Lifting stations: metal frames with supports and sometimes with a built-in bench. These can offer a number of exercise options.
  • Home / Multi-Fitness Studios: Holistically designed to target and strengthen different parts of the body, this is an all-in-one device. These are equipped with a cable and pulley system that establishes a resistance point for each exercise, and they come with a variety of attachments and features.

Weight benches: Efficient, versatile, simple, light and easy to move in the tightest of spaces. They're usually very affordable, but are generally sold separately from the weighted plates used with them. This can get expensive depending on the weight you're trying to lift.

Choose additional accessories for convenience, safety, and proper use

Comfort and safety should be your priorities when exercising with heavy weights. You optimize your training by using weights correctly and efficiently. There are a wide variety of fitness accessories on the market, not all of which are essential for every weight lifter, but some that can be particularly useful or even essential for your individual purposes. Additional exercise equipment that you might consider include gloves, weight rack and storage, collar, belt, straps, and floor pads. Depending on the type of flooring you are lifting on in your house, some type of floor protection might be a good idea to protect it from scratches or other damage from the heavy steel weights you are using.

Conclusion

After you've done your research and decided what type of weights and equipment is best, you can search online or in stores for the information you want and need. Customizing your weightlifting center at home can be an exciting experience that can motivate you to reach your fitness goals. You also don't have to worry about the gym fees and have the privacy to focus on yourself and develop a healthy routine.

Abode Starter Kit Review: A decent but flawed home monitoring system

Residence Starter Kit rating upright in front

"The basic hardware with low specifications is disappointing, but with a smooth app experience, Abode is a smart home platform that shouldn't be ignored."

  • Beautifully designed web and app dashboard controls

  • Z-Wave, ZigBee, Wi-Fi and Abode RF connectivity

  • Support for more than 200 device integrations

  • Voice control via Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant

  • Cheap, relatively weak hardware

  • Low resolution camera with blurry, smeared images

  • Inconsistent sensor connection

This year there was a revival of smart home security solutions, with August, Nest, Ring and Samsung SmartThings announcing all lines. Companies like Abode are, of course, old hands in intelligent security and sell gateways, sensors, remote key fobs and motion detection cameras after a successful Kickstarter start.

With Abode introducing a 1080p surveillance camera, door sensors, and a variety of third-party device integrations and compatibility with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, we thought it would be a good time to get the starter kit for $ 199 (originally $ 299 Dollars). You can find out how it developed in our test report for the Abode Starter Kit below.

The entire hardware range from Abode includes a comprehensive range of hardware, including a gateway alarm system, door and window sensors, motion and occupancy detectors, surveillance cameras, sockets, smoke detectors, temperature sensors and much more. The Abode Starter Kit is designed to introduce you to the ecosystem with a clear entry-level package that the bank does not break.

It contains the Abode Gateway, a relatively compact hub that serves as the heart of the security network and contains a siren with 93 decibels to deter even the bravest intruders. The gateway includes two door / window contact sensors, a motion camera and a remote control key to activate or deactivate the system with a simple push of a button.

Not a modest place of residence

The Abode Starter Kit is attractively packaged in a buff and cyan box, which describes itself as the "future of security at home". At first glance, it is certainly not a modest place to stay. The hardware itself is relatively well built, but does not quite match the premium feeling you experience with Nest or August products. The strict, modernist aesthetics of the black and white Abode Gateway will divide opinions. We're not big fans of the look of the device, which resembles a simple rectangular router from 2011 – fortunately without antennas. We were concerned about the sharp edges and sharp corners of the device. The Abode Gateway is covered with glossy acrylic, which easily takes fingerprints, stains and smudges. While it looks sharp (and literally feels that way), it also feels a little cheap.

Terry Walsh / Digital Trends

The remaining hardware that is included in the starter kit has a different build quality. The door / window sensors feel similarly weak, but the motion camera and two-tone key fob are more robust, with the latter feeling good in your hand.

Several radios connect a wide ecosystem of security devices with optional surveillance services

Perhaps the greater part of the construction costs were invested under the hood. With integrated Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, ZigBee and AbodeRF (the latter is a proprietary protocol for long-range connectivity), the Abode Gateway can be connected to a variety of sensors, intelligent sockets and controllers. Up to 155 devices can be connected. With Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, you can control some of your devices with your voice. You can also enable the Alexa Guard ability to enable and disable the system.

It's good to see a number of options, and the plans themselves are easy to understand

Some third-party devices also work with Abode, including Nest Cam, Nest Protect and the Nest Learning Thermostat, Philips Hue, Amazon Echo and IFTTT. In addition to the company's own devices, the gateway also plays with hardware from Aeon, Enerwave, Fibaro, GE, Kwikset, Leviton, Schlage and others.

In addition to this powerful 93 decibel siren, the Abode Gateway has a 10-hour battery backup that provides protection in the event of a power outage and an optional cellular network connection that is available for a monthly fee of $ 10.

Abode is billed as a professional security system. Therefore, it makes sense that the company also offers 24/7 professional monitoring bundled with a cellular backup for $ 30 a month. This Connect + Secure plan also includes a 90-day timeline and media storage, compared to just three days of storage available in the basic starter kit. You can decide whether professional surveillance is required for your home. However, it is good to see a number of options, and the plans themselves are easy to understand without temporary locks.

Smooth system installation with a little hiccup

As expected, installing a reasonably comprehensive security system at home is not a two-minute task, but Abode is clearly committed to making the process as smooth as possible. The gateway connects to your WLAN router via a replacement Ethernet connection. Pressing a quick button on the back of the device activates the backup battery.

From there you can configure the gateway with the free Abode app, which is available for iOS and Android devices. You need to create an Abode account and then continue the setup on your mobile device or desktop web browser.

Abode Starter Kit checking flat portsTerry Walsh / Digital Trends

Terry Walsh / Digital Trends

An activation code included in the scope of delivery identifies your gateway and is required to connect the starter kit to your account. After entering your Abode gateway will be found and activated quickly on the Internet. It's quick and easy.

Of course, you will then have the fun of installing the sensors and the camera at home. Fortunately, the Abode app guides you through the device installation with practical tips for placing and aligning the sensor. Depending on the size of your doors, windows, and frames, the sensors may be more than a little bulky. Although they increase safety, they certainly do not improve aesthetics. At the very least, they are easy to install, as double-sided adhesive strips ensure that no tools are required.

Abode clearly strives to make the installation process as smooth as possible.

The installation instructions for the motion camera was less successful. First we were asked to remove a clear plastic tab to activate the batteries, but the tab on the device could not be found. At this point we noticed that the batteries were in the box and were not installed. Not a drama, but a bit sloppy from a user experience perspective. Inserting the batteries was a quick task, but required a screwdriver to remove the back plate of the camera.

After switching on, you can try out different positions for the motion camera that takes still pictures when the integrated PIR sensor is triggered. Preview the resulting images and you're done.

A rear bracket snaps into the device for corner mounting. Adhesive strips stick to each wall to hold the camera in place. Alternatively, you can use another self-adhesive pad for the flat wall installation, which is included in the scope of delivery. While the adhesive pads are certainly practical and keep the equipment in place, we want wall anchors and screws to be supplied as a more permanent option as well. Attention tenants! The pads remove paint from the wall when removed. A stand for the camera that would allow more freedom in positioning as well as easy relocation would also be a great addition.

With the hardware set up, you can use the Abode app to grant family members and friends account access. Only two user accounts are supported in the free basic plan. However, if you sign up for one of Abode's monthly services, this restriction will be removed. A quick tour of the app and you're good to go. Allow at least 15 minutes to set up Abode, with more difficult camera positions requiring more time. Apart from this battery error in the camera, installing the Abode system was a breeze.

Simple and responsive hardware with little specification dilutes the experience

One aspect of living with Abode that we really liked was that you are not limited to monitoring the system through a mobile app. Log in to the Abode website using a desktop browser and you have full visibility and control over your home security. The system combines the convenience of controlling mobile apps with the convenience of desktop monitoring – a perfect combination.

When Abode first delivered its all-inclusive security package, it included an app for Android, which, to put it bluntly, was a first effort. Since then, Abode has been updated to version 5.0.4 and is miles better than the previous version. The first time you open the app, you will be asked for a PIN. You can also integrate your phone's fingerprint reader to bypass the lock.

As soon as you get into the app, you get access to your system status as well as quick actions and camera views via the dashboard. Quick actions allow you to create shortcuts to common tasks that prevent you from having to rummage through menus.

In the lower navigation bar you will find the most important information for the system. The timeline shows you all the events that have occurred. CUE is an automation function that we discussed in detail earlier. Your device list shows you what you have and what status you have, and all are just a tap away. Even the general app settings have been organized in a much better interface. The first edition of this app had most of what this version does, but the main difference is that they're in places that make sense. To put it cautiously, the last iteration of the app didn't quite reach this bar.

Overall, this is an important update to the software that is running your smart home security that was badly needed. The previous app relied heavily on using the in-browser interface while referring to mobile devices. You can still use the web interface, but it is much less reliant on it now. This app gives your phone a lot more control. This is the device most of us will turn to most anyway. This is a fundamental facelift for the app and the entire company.

Access Abode from a desktop browser and take advantage of an expanded range of features beautifully presented in a modern, web-based dashboard. Again, you can view a clear timeline of events and warnings, monitor and manage device status and settings, create quick actions (e.g. macros for multiple devices), and configure automatic home and away perimeters to activate the system based on or disable your smartphone location and more.

The gateway alarm was quickly triggered by the camera and was extremely loud.

On the other hand, you have to repeatedly deal with attempts to buy additional hardware or subscribe to one of the company's premium service plans. You can't blame Abode for starting a business, but once the plans are rejected at launch, these prompts really have to go away instead of popping up all the time. Overall, Abode supports a variety of monitoring and management functions that are well presented and very responsive on both mobile and desktop dashboards.

The starter kit hardware itself is a little less fancy. Images taken by the motion camera have a very low resolution (standard 320 x 240, maximum 640 x 480), which leads to blurry, smeared images that can be used to detect presence, but are not suitable for identification . Without night vision support, the camera relies on an integrated flash for pictures in the dark. The flash does a decent job of illuminating a dark room, even though the pictures are a little yellow. However, the low resolution is the main problem. You should definitely consider upgrading to Abode's newly announced 1080p indoor camera for $ 149, which offers live streaming video, triggered recording, and built-in night vision.

We also found the window / door sensors a bit spirited. While the system correctly recognized the opening of a door or window, it was far less successful in recognizing the same door or window. This caused complaints when we tried to activate the system. Abode repeatedly and incorrectly informed us that the door was open. Maybe with more time to fine-tune the positioning of the sensors, we could improve detection in both directions, but we were frustrated that the detection worked in one direction but not the other.

We had no complaints about the gateway alarm that was triggered by the camera or door window / sensor and was consistently loud. After triggering, we received a notification on the phone within seconds with practical options for notifying the police or disabling the alarm. The system responded quickly when we deactivated the alarm and the bat stopped in a few seconds.

Overall, we were pleased with Abode's simplicity and responsiveness, but as with any multi-device system, your experience will be determined to some extent by the smart home sensors and other hardware you choose to connect to. The Abode Starter Kit will certainly familiarize you with the basics, but it won't be long before you want to upgrade.

Add Alexa and other smart home devices for perfect partnerships

Of course, you can't start a smart home system these days without familiarizing yourself with a number of third-party devices. Since Google (via Nest) and Amazon both enter the smart home security game, startups like Abode have to deliver breadth, depth and quality when it comes to integration. At first glance, Abode seems to have hit the ground.

Abode's Alexa capability enables you to monitor and control the system with an Amazon Echo or other Alexa device. If you have security concerns, a verbal PIN number is used to confirm certain commands, e.g. B. deactivate the system or deactivate an alarm. In addition to core functions such as the gateway alarm, the capability supports a wide selection of commands, the control of connected locks, sockets, garage doors and configured quick actions.

We have found that Alexa integration works well. If you detect intrusion, you can verbally trigger (or disable) a panic alarm faster than when you search for your phone. It only takes a few seconds to activate the system using a voice command, and we have found that Abode is consistently very responsive.

We connected a Nest learning thermostat and were pleased to see that not only could you synchronize Abode's absence status with that of the thermostat, but that manual temperature control was also available through the Abode desktop dashboard and the mobile app. This is also not a quick and dirty implementation. In both dashboards it was clearly considered to create a simple, intuitive user interface that connects the overall design of Abode with the device to be controlled.

With a strong and flexible platform, Abode should not be ignored.

Abode has developed a strong and flexible platform that can easily serve as a control panel for many smart homes.

While the Abode Starter Kit isn't perfect, it does provide a convenient introduction to the company's smart home platform at a reasonable price. Given the Kickstarter roots, it's no surprise that the gateway hardware and sensors are a bit rough around the edges (sometimes literally) and we want second-generation devices from Abode to feel higher with higher specifications and higher reliability. The cameras and sensors included in the starter kit don't show the Abode ecosystem as well as it should, and although the gateway works well, it won't be the prettiest or best built device in your home.

However, if you look beyond these entry-level devices, you can see that significant investments have been made in Abode's underlying platform. The Abode app and the web dashboard are well designed and beautifully designed and support simple, intuitive control without being unnecessarily conspicuous. The third-party integrations we tested were easy to connect and worked well. This demonstrated Abode's potential as a comprehensive smart home solution that combines heating, lighting, entertainment and security.

Since large companies are now dominating the smart home market, Abode must certainly work on its hardware in order to continue the early dynamic. However, with a strong and flexible platform, Abode should not be ignored.

Warranty information

The Abode Starter Kit is covered by a one-year guarantee that covers material or processing defects.

Our opinion

The Abode Starter Kit offers a cost-effective introduction to the company's smart home platform. However, the included gateway, camera and sensors offer disappointing build quality and specifications. Abode's software platform, however, is simple, intuitive and can be connected to a variety of smart home devices. Abode may not be at the top of our list of smart home platform providers, but it's certainly one you should check out.

Is there a better alternative?

Before you decide to buy a Smart Home Security, you should opt for the higher-quality and more expensive Nest Secure system for $ 499 or the cheaper $ 199 ring alarm.

How long it will take?

After four years, Abode is doing an excellent job adding new features and upgrades to its platform. As a small company with installations of thousands instead of hundreds of thousands, time will tell whether the company can take over the power of Nest, Amazon and other technology giants. Smart home security is reviving and there will likely be casualties. So there is a certain risk of choosing a smaller provider that may be acquired or lost in the struggle for supremacy of smart homes. However, we are currently not aware of any specific problems that would indicate that Abode will not be available in the medium term.

Should you buy it

With a variety of companies announcing security solutions for smart homes this year, Abode would not be our first choice. The platform looks good, but the starter kit hardware is clearly Kickstarter class. Be sure to check out bigger competitors like Nest, Amazon, and Netgear before you get started.

Updated July 13, 2020: The updated app experience has been noted.

Arlo Pro 3 Review: A Great Choice For Smart Home Security

Netgear Arlo Pro 3

"The Alro Pro 3 is a premium choice for smart home security."

  • Weatherproof, wireless cameras

  • High quality 2K video

  • Smart A.I. properties

  • Easy to install and use

  • Easy upgrade for existing Arlo owners

  • Minor performance issues with multiple 2K streams

  • A subscription is required for advanced features

Since its beginnings as a peculiar offshoot of Netgear, Arlo has found its rhythm with an excellent selection of wireless and weatherproof smart cams. The high-resolution Arlo Pro 2 tops our list of the best outdoor surveillance cameras in 2019 – and it is also a good choice for indoor surveillance.

In April Arlos became Ultra 4K came and marked the first shot in a next generation battle for the supremacy of the UHD Smart Cam. It offers superior sharpness and impressively large views, but a price tag of $ 300 per camera and a restrictive upgrade path for existing Arlo owners meant it wasn't a big hit.

The Arlo Pro 3 ($ 499 for a 2-camera kit with additional cameras at $ 199 each) sits exactly between the two. While Arlo Ultra 4K's headline-breaking UHD resolution is lacking, it does offer a wider range of enhancements that make it a better choice than Arlo's most expensive kit.

There has been fierce competition in this area, but Arlo's excellent track record has given consumers confidence that this should succeed.

This new model improves the Arlo Pro 2's 1080p image resolution to sharper, more vivid 2K (2560 x 1440 pixels) and supports a high dynamic range (HDR), which promises better video quality in very dark or bright areas. A 160 degree field of view may be narrower than the Arlo Ultra 4K's generous 180 degree field of view, but it's a significant advance over the 130 degrees offered by the outgoing model.

Additional functions are performed directly by the Arlo Ultra 4K. An integrated headlamp allows Arlo to take advantage of color night vision support, while noise-canceling two-way audio and a siren in front of the camera further strengthen the Arlo Pro 3's security requirements. It also benefits from the clean magnetic charging system that we got to know in April that promises a battery life of up to six months between charges.

A better choice for Arlo upgrades

Visually, the cameras and the SmartHub of the Arlo Pro 3 look identical to those we saw when we tested the Arlo 4K Ultra. That's not a bad thing, as Arlo's much-copied design is one of the more compact and attractive systems. The curvy all-plastic case is sturdy enough to withstand the elements, while installation is simplified by a strong magnetic mounting system (a screw-mounting option is also available). A partially flattened base also allows the camera to be placed indoors on a shelf or desktop. In short, you can install the Arlo Pro 3 anywhere.

The often copied design by Arlo is one of the more compact and attractive systems.

It also includes Arlo's latest SmartHub (VMB4540), which enables the network connection between the cameras and your router. Again, it looks identical to the slimmer device introduced with the Arlo Ultra 4K, but a closer look reveals important differences. External video storage for camera shots is available, but this model enables it via a single USB 2.0 port instead of the microSD slot equipped with the Arlo Ultra.

This is good news for surveillance video horters who benefit from storage capacities of up to 2 TB. The With Arlo Pro 3's lower resolution video, the system can also operate with reduced bandwidth requirements. This SmartHub works with 802.11 b / g / n Wi-Fi and not with the faster "AC" standard supported by the Arlo Ultra 4K.

Netgear Arlo Pro 3Terry Walsh / Digital Trends

Perhaps the best news is that owners of some older Arlo systems You can add Arlo Pro 3 cameras to your existing network and take advantage of enhanced 2K video streams without having to replace the SmartHubs. This makes the Arlo Pro 3 a better upgrade option than Arlo's top tier kit. Arlo Pro 3 owners can even add Ultra 4K cameras to their systems at a later date without losing functionality.

Setup is a breeze

As with every Arlo system we tested, commissioning Arlo Pro 3 is very easy. Arlo recently launched a new version of its smartphone app that guides you through the installation. While cheaper smart camera systems can switch between direct Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections during setup, Arlo's wired SmartHub does the installation smoothly.

Hardware installation is just as easy. The scope of delivery includes options for screw and magnetic fastening. Arlo's newer concave magnetic mount is fabulous and combines strength and versatility. Cameras snap into place on the bracket on the back and can be precisely angled despite the fixed connection. For more ambitious assembly, the included adjustable safety bracket can be screwed into walls, fences, ceilings, trees, etc. It supports 360 degree rotation and 90 degree tilt.

A step in video quality

In use, the Arlo Pro 3's 2K image quality is a noticeable improvement over the previous generation camera (and a big leap over the 720p that is supported by the original Arlo system). While it's not quite as clear as Arlo Ultra 4K or wired Nest Cam IQ models, it's still very good indeed.

The improved resolution allows you to use the camera's 12x digital zoom without instantly breaking images into blurry chaos. If you exceed the 3x zoom, the quality will be noticeably affected. Arlo Pro 3 is equipped with an intelligent automatic zoom and tracking function, which is practical for security monitoring. As we found with the Arlo Ultra 4K, the resolution of the camera is unfortunately reduced to 1080p when the function is activated.

Night vision offers greater sharpness and clarity than many competitors.

We found that the image quality is balanced during the day, with precise colors and good contrast. Arlo's Auto HDR feature makes it one of the few smart cameras we've tested indoors that avoid overexposure near bright windows. This means taking pictures of people looking through your windows to see if you are at home. The 160-degree field of view is wide enough to cover all but the most spacious rooms or huge gardens, and the distortion of the fisheye is negligible.

At night, Arlo Pro 3's color night vision feature requires the camera's built-in headlight to be illuminated. The resulting images are certainly more natural than the creepy standard monochrome images produced by competitors. Although the range is good, color night vision suffers from the blurring and noise that normally occurs in high ISO photography. If the headlight is deactivated, the camera returns to a standard night vision setting. The lighting area is good here too, and while monochrome images are a bit noisy, the night vision of Arlo Pro 3 offers greater clarity and clarity than many of its competitors.

Piercing alarm, integrated headlight

While the Arlo Pro 3 doesn't necessarily compete with those Easy or nest safe As a full-fledged smart home security system, it comes with a number of overlapping features that are worth considering until we wait for the next one to arrive Arlo security system.

The Arlo Pro 2 SmartHub piercing alarm was transmitted to the cameras themselves. The option can be triggered when motion is detected. The resulting racket is certainly enough to scare an intruder and, together with the camera's bright, integrated LED spotlight, forms an effective first line of protection for your home.

The Arlo app supports a number of configurable modes for activating the system. In addition to manually switching, you can enable monitoring using a timed schedule or geolocation setting. Each mode can be customized with simple IFTTT rules for motion detection, video recording and built-in alarm, or you can quickly create a custom mode that suits your preferences. Everything is very simple.

Easy to use, but it's super smart under the hood.

Elsewhere, we found the updated Arlo app easy to understand. There are few ways to tweak camera settings, but they do include useful options such as brightness, low-light settings, and video quality controls. Navigating, reviewing, and sharing video clips from the library is easy. A standard daily timeline view is supported by filters that allow users to zoom in on certain cameras or check clips based on the type of alert triggered or the object detected. Our only criticism of the app is that connecting to a camera's livestream can take a while, even on the local network. In some cases, we watched live videos within 5 seconds. In other cases, there is a delay of up to 30 seconds.

Terry Walsh / Digital Trends

Since both cameras broadcast 2K video live at the same time, we noticed some temporary performance problems during stress tests. About every 20 seconds, both streams were replaced by a black screen for one second before the livestream was restored. When 2K local streaming was disabled, the performance improved, although there was occasional flickering. Since both cameras report a good signal, we can only assume that this was a problem with the network bandwidth or a processing bottleneck. Maybe it would have been better to maintain Arlo Ultra's 802.11ac connectivity?

Intelligent functions behind Paywall

While Nest often praises Smart Cam A.I. Received, the Arlo Pro 3 is equipped with an admirable set of improvements that offer real comfort and benefit. Unfortunately, most are locked up behind you Arlo Smart Subscription service for $ 3 per month. A 3-month free trial version is available during setup so that you can try out the functions and check whether the upgrade makes sense.

This includes extended object recognition, which the camera can use to differentiate between people, vehicles, animals and packages (the latter is currently in the beta phase). Smoke and carbon dioxide alarm detection sends you a smartphone notification when a camera detects an audible alarm. US subscribers also benefit from an e911 feature that allows you to call emergency services with a single touch of a button on your smartphone.

We loved Arlo's extensive notification feature, which adds a thumbnail to the smart notifications sent to your phone. When a person is recognized, an image captured by your camera is displayed. Many smart cams do the same thing, but Arlo also darkens the image and clearly highlights the person in the frame. A quick look and you can check if the friend or foe of the camera has been recognized. Arlo is easy to use, but super smart under the hood. With everyday features like custom activity zones and a 30-day video recording cloud, Arlo Smart functions well. Only you can decide whether they are worth the extra effort.

Our opinion

While the Arlo Ultra 4K made headlines with its eye-catching UHD video resolution, we think the Arlo Pro 3 is a more worthy and economical successor to our favorite Smartcam of the past two years, the Arlo Pro 2. It is certainly not cheap, but the improved one Image quality, the integrated security functions and the simple app control of the Arlo Pro 3 make it an excellent choice for home surveillance. If you enjoy investing in a monthly subscription, you can take advantage of an expanded suite of useful A.I. Features that make the Arlo Pro 3 one of the smartest systems around. In the meantime, owners of Arlo systems of the first and second generation have a reasonable way to update their cameras and / or SmartHubs. We were waiting for a competitive Arlo Pro 2 smart cam to hit the bar – maybe it was inevitable that the Arlo Pro 3 would do the job.

Is there a better alternative?

Few intelligent cameras offer Arlo's convincing mix of lightness, quality and versatility. With a limited budget, however, there are numerous cheaper systems available. The Swann Smart Security Camera ($ 129) is a solid budget device with similar wireless connectivity and weatherproof protection to Arlo and 1080p HD imaging.

At the premium end of the market, the Arlo 4K Ultra ($ 599 for a 2-camera bundle) definitely beats the Arlo Pro 3 in terms of video quality, but you should be aware that you are into new cameras and a replacement SmartHub must invest Use UHD video. It's also worth noting that Arlo recently expanded its line and introduced new models like the Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight and the Arlo Essential.

The Cam Cam Outdoor ($ 329) and Nest Cam IQ Indoor ($ 229) cameras are top-notch performers that lack the versatility and value of the Arlo Pro 3.

How long it will take?

Arlo Pro 3 was developed to withstand the hard temperament of mother nature with operating temperatures between -20 ° C and 45 ° C. So expect the hardware to be robust. In terms of software, Arlo continues to publish improvements and optimizations for all Arlo systems. We therefore expect the owners to live a long and happy life with the Arlo Pro 3.

Should you buy it

Yes. It's an investment, but the Arlo Pro 3 is a great choice for those considering their first smart home camera system.

Iron Man VR Review: Bring the summer blockbuster home

"Iron Man VR is an entertaining superhero adventure that doesn't quite reach the summer blockbuster heights."

  • Satisfactory flying

  • Frenetic dogfighting

  • Creative motion control

  • A robust package

  • Fussy VR

  • Generic history

  • Unpolished graphics

Any other year, Iron Man VR would have flown under the radar. Despite all of the simulated exploits and explosions, it's the kind of licensed superhero fare that feels slim next to a muscular Marvel Studios movie.

But of course 2020 is not another year. Cinema-goers won't pack theater to see the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon. Iron Man VR could be the best thing that fans will bring to a summer blockbuster this year. It's not an ideal replacement, but the thought of traveling to a fantasy world where good always beats evil sounds more appealing when hope is so scarce.

Although Iron Man VR doesn't fully exploit its promising potential due to technical limitations and a general lack of polish, thanks to its creative control scheme, it offers enough fun and action film heroism.

Marvel flight simulator

Iron Man VR can best be described as a first person aerial combat game. Players step into the iconic red and gold armor to read an original story about a mysterious hacker who directed Tony Stark's deadly drones against him. Much of the adventure is spent flying around arena-like locations and blowing robot waves out of the air.

Both actions are carried out with different success using the PS Move controller. When flying, hold the moves straight down and press the triggers to drive forward. Turning the controller to the left or right moves the suit in this direction, while tilting it horizontally increases the height.

It's not the most seamless VR flight game, but when it all comes together, it's an undeniably cool experience.

It may seem intuitive at first, but gets more complicated when steering comes into play. Players can tilt their heads to rotate, but the most effective way to move is to press a button to rotate the camera. Flying becomes a difficult balance between controlling the character's position in the game and focusing on the PlayStation camera in physical space.

It is not the fastest learning process. In the game's early missions, I played with my arms and neck and tried to achieve a smooth flight pattern. It felt like I was playing a scene in a Spider-Man film in which a freshly bitten Peter Parker whirls around on the roofs and tries to learn the mechanics of his nets.

All this trial and error paid off when the controls finally clicked. In an outstanding mission, players fly through a rocky canyon to pursue a runaway villain. It's a standard video game chase, but it's also a sequence that rewards the player's mastery. As I raced through narrow passages and effortlessly snaked around rugged cliffs, I felt less like a youthful avenger. Instead, the PSVR headset felt like the Iron Man helmet, and the Move controllers became palm boosters. At that moment I was a superhero racing through the air with verve.

It's not the most seamless VR flight game, but when it all comes together, it's an undeniably cool experience.

Exploits

The action side of the game has its own ups and downs. During the flight, the Move controllers can be raised to shoot enemies. When you aim a straight one like a sword, players can fire blaster shots from the palm of their hand while flipping down activates an auxiliary attack like homing missiles from the suit's wrist.

If everything works as intended, all the time you spent as a child playing superheroes was worth it.

As with flying, shooting takes a bit to get the hang of it. The nuance of the wrist placement makes it difficult to constantly trigger the intended force in rapid battles. Flying and shooting at the same time is a separate fight in which the players have to juggle two separate movements. If the flight feels like it is fully focused, it will be absolutely impossible to do the tandem action.

Even with the tricky controls, firefights are often fun and hectic. The waves of jellyfish-like drones offer players a lot of moving targets where they can test their skills. It is uniquely satisfying to blow up incoming enemies with the palm of your hand on the right and aim with the other five ships and destroy them at once with a barrage of wrist missiles.

Iron Man VR

Iron Man VR adds additional gestural gameplay to enhance the feeling of heroism. If you hold down a button and swing the controller, a powerful blow is triggered, which can throw opponents back. There are also many other well-known comic book moments. The players open incredibly heavy gates and release the stuck landing gear of an airplane during the adventure. This type of tactile design feels more exciting than tapping X quickly to achieve strength in an average game.

The overall fight can sometimes feel a bit simple, especially when compared to a superhero game that is as varied and fluid as Marvel's Spider-Man, but the physicality of VR allows for additional experimentation in combat. If everything works as intended, all the time you spent as a child playing superheroes was worth it.

B-Movie

Despite a creative approach to control, Iron Man VR stumbles across its presentation. The story itself is a collection of genre clichés, from tortured heroes to predictable red pegs. The constant jokes feel like they've been pulled out of a seminar on writing a Marvel movie.

The graphics don't look much better. Many of the textures wouldn't look out of place in an average Nintendo GameCube game, and the largest set pieces tend to fall flat with lackluster effects. That wouldn't normally be a deal breaker for VR, but superhero games live and die through spectacle. Iron Man VR has a lot of potential, but can't always deliver its blockbuster moments. Explosions are more often anti-climactic than they inspire.

Iron Man VR

It's not that the game doesn't feel complete. It's a weighty package with an eight-hour history, lots of bonus missions, and a full suit customization. The problem boils down to a lack of polish that feels uncomfortable for the genre.

Love her or hate her, Marvel films have made entertainment a science. These superhero adventures have been carefully designed to provide constant fun for fans. Even when they are the weakest, it is rare for this iron formula to crack.

Iron Man VR has a lot of potential, but can't always deliver its blockbuster moments.

Iron Man VR, on the other hand, is a game in which players constantly see the seams. The technical restrictions always prevail, whether in the form of recycled locations or incredibly long loading times. These limits are particularly noticeable in the game's home base scenes, where Tony Stark's arms tend to twist and twist in a way that makes a surgeon flinch.

The frequent interruptions in flight keep Iron Man VR from reaching new superhero heights. There are lightning bolts from Avengers Action, but the experience is more similar to that of Tony Stark, who controls his Mark I armor for the first time and tries to remove the kinks.

Our opinion

Iron Man VR is an entertaining escape that finds creative ways to turn motion controls into heroic stunts, but lacks the thrill and polish needed to make it feel like a real Hollywood spectacle.

Is there a better alternative?

Marvel's Spider-Man is still the gold standard for modern superhero games, and Eagle Flight is a more elegant (but disgusting) VR flight experience.

How long it will take?

The story takes approximately eight hours and the game features races, combat attempts and free flight to add weight to the package.

Should you buy it

Yes, if you have a PSVR and a Move controller. If you don't have one, a killer app isn't enough to justify a full VR investment.
