Pentax FA Star Series 85mm F/1.4 Review: Stellar Performer

Pentax-D FA Star-Series 85mm f / 1.4 in hand with lens hood attached

“Pentax fans have a winner. For everyone else, the Star Series 85mm is the best portrait lens you will never use. "

  • Very sharp

  • Excellent workmanship

  • Nice bokeh

  • Minimal vignetting

  • Minimal chromatic aberration

If you're a camera company that has made the decision to double up on DSLRs despite the surge in popularity of mirrorless cameras, you should at least have some lenses worth talking about. This is exactly what Ricoh, owned by Pentax, did with the slowly growing Star series, and the new HD Pentax-D FA Star series with 85mm f / 1.4 SDM AW is a shining example of optical excellence. This full-frame portrait lens can easily hold its own against the best 85mm lenses from other brands. In fact, it's a near-perfect lens – and at $ 1,900, it should be.

There is only one possible problem that is preventing most people from enjoying it: it requires a Pentax camera.

Mammoth size

The first thing you notice about the Sta-Series 85mm f / 1.4 is the world-eating size of the front panel. If you look into it for too long, you can get lost. This lens is a giant at 2.77 pounds – heavier than the already uncomfortably large Sigma 85mm f / 1.4 Art. Perhaps that's why it's called a star lens – it has enough mass to create its own gravitational field.

Daven Mathies / Digital Trends

With the lens hood attached, it looks like a much longer telephoto lens than just 85mm. Passers-by who saw me testing no doubt assumed that I wanted to watch birds.

But when you can handle the weight, you'll love how top-notch it all feels. The lens is completely weatherproof, the materials are luxurious, the focus ring is buttery soft, and even the lens hood feels redesigned, with a rubber collar on the front and a grippy inner surface. The hood snaps into place with a very short reach bayonet mount that is faster to use than most other hoods and is incredibly satisfying to do so. If ASMR were a lens, it would be the Pentax Star Series 85mm.

With 12 elements in 10 groups, the optical formula isn't really that complex, at least in terms of pure numbers. Despite the added weight, that's two elements less than the aforementioned Sigma 85mm Art. Numbers aren't everything, however, and Pentax has clearly made efficient use of the glass it contains, including three particularly low-dispersion Super ED elements and a single aspherical element.

Daven Mathies / Digital Trends

Pentax is also paying particular attention to its new autofocus system. The SDM motor has 1.3 times more torque than the 50 mm Star series lens, and the focus group contains, according to Pentax, a “greater number of optical elements than normal lenses”. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but the focus performance is certainly very fast.

The lens also uses an electronically controlled aperture which, according to Pentax, interestingly allows smooth exposure adjustments while recording video. By the way, almost every modern lens uses an electronically controlled iris, which tends to be more accurate than the older lever-driver style. Aside from smooth exposure changes in the video, this is helpful for consistency in things like time-lapse photography.

Daven Mathies / Digital Trends

The remaining specs include nine rounded bezel blades, a minimum focus distance of 33.5 inches, and a 0.12x magnification ratio. Spec sheet snoopers will find that these are all identical to the Sigma 85mm Art. It's almost as if Ricoh had some work to do in developing this lens (Sigma, which makes lenses for many different camera brands, stopped manufacturing Pentax K-mount lenses last year). Surprisingly, because of its additional weight, the Pentax “only” uses an 82 mm filter compared to the Sigma's 86 mm filter.

But the Sigma is $ 800 cheaper. So there is this.

Comparing these two lenses is, of course, nothing more than an academic exercise. One is available exclusively for Pentax, the other for every DSLR except Pentax.

Deep field

Aspherical elements and high torque focus motors are great, but I know that the only thing people really care about about an 85mm f / 1.4 is the bokeh. You want to see backgrounds that are forgotten, turning point lights into large, soft, gently overlapping circles. I assure you, dear reader, that the Star Series 85mm delivers all of this.

Environmental portrait shot with an 85mm f / 1.4 lens from the Pentax-D FA Star seriesDaven Mathies / Digital Trends

At 1: 1.4 wide open, your subject is brought to rest on a pillow-like bokeh cloud. The depth of field is so shallow that you can still achieve a decent separation of subject and background when the subject is relatively long. This is ideal for full body portraits or shots where you want to draw attention to a relatively small subject in a large setting.

As expected, there is vignetting at f / 1.4, but it's pretty mild. With f / 2.8 it's completely gone. The sharpness of the center is fantastic at any aperture, although the edges slope off a bit with larger apertures. I was impressed with how well a night sky was rendered at f / 1.4, and while an 85mm lens wouldn't be my first choice for astrophotography, this lens is sharp enough to handle it. It gets even sharper if you stop at 1: 5.6. However, in the real world, you should feel confident choosing an aperture for exactly the depth of field you want without having to worry about sharpness.

The chromatic aberration is particularly well controlled. I noticed some color fringes in defocused areas, as is common with any lens, but only extremely small stripes in the focal plane and only with large apertures.

Oh, and there just isn't any distortion. At all.

I have to get really pedantic to find a bug with this lens, but let's go: while the blur circles aren't perfectly rounded 1: 2 in the center of the frame at f / 1.4, they extend in Rectangles. If you stop after f / 2.8, you can see the angular shape of the iris leaves in the blur circles. "Onion rings" also appeared in my test shots of LED string lights. It's all awful, I know.

Seriously, the Pentax 85mm f / 1.4 is a beautiful lens, and checking its little flaws is nothing but a waste of time. If you believe in the Pentax Belief and can win two grand, just step out and shoot, focus on your art, and trust this lens to keep making gold.

Astral plane

Products like these make being a reviewer great because I can try something new that I really enjoy, but that I would never actually buy for myself. I mean, did you think I would switch to Pentax?

And there is the problem. The Star Series 85mm feels like a dream, a utopian experience separated from reality. It could be the Pentax, not the Pentax.

I tested the lens on a Pentax K1 Mark II, which is a full-frame DSLR with an older but still excellent 36-megapixel sensor. I didn't want image quality – although I think this lens will go for even higher resolutions – but it's still not good enough for this lens. The 33-point viewfinder autofocus system lacks the flexibility and accuracy to actually use it. They are basically fixed to single point AF and the “focus and reformulate” shooting method. This is not the easiest way to get sharp results with an aperture of f / 1.4. During this test, as impressed as I was, I could only imagine how much better the lens would be with Sony's real-time eye AF or flawless subject tracking from Canon in the EOS R5.

The K1 Mark II has never been my favorite DSLR, but most of the flaws are simply that of format. DSLRs simply cannot offer the advanced focus features that mirrorless cameras take for granted. A couple of extraordinary lenses might have been enough to get people back to Pentax – if they didn't have to get people back to the DSLR first.

But the optimist would say that this lens is trend-setting. If Pentax can make such a great lens, maybe there will be an equally great DSLR soon. I think there is still room for innovation in DSLRs, but they have been moving away from the mainstream for years. Perhaps Pentax can be the one to rule this new niche realm?

After all, Ricoh is apparently good at working on the sidelines. The GR III is a neat little camera that was built for a select few street photographers. This Pentax lens is aimed at a similarly small group of customers. The brand may never be a high-volume competitor, but that doesn't mean the Star Series 85mm is any less of a triumph for those who can (and can afford) use it. Whatever your reasons for sticking to your Pentax DSLR, you have another big one right now.

Our opinion

Like the quiet, introverted kid in the back of the class who passes the test but doesn't say a word, Pentax continues to use some stunning lenses with little fanfare. Even the CameraVille, possibly the only Pentax-focused YouTuber, doesn't have a handy video at the time of publication. Compared to influencer-obsessed Sony and Canon, that's … kind of nice.

Of course, a lack of fanfare can simply signal a lack of fans. But for all of the confusing decisions Pentax has made with cameras (remember the Q?), I can still admire it when I make lenses like this. The Pentax-D FA Star Series 85mm f / 1.4 is as good as it gets – though most people will never get a chance to try.

Enjoy this moment, Pentax shooters. You finally have time to be happy.

Is there a better alternative?

No. The options for third-party Pentax photographers are slim these days. In many ways, this lens feels like a response to the lack of alternatives. However, in addition to being a great option, this is the only option. Vacuum or not, this is a brilliant portrait lens.

How long it will take?

Any professional lens will easily outlive the life of your camera, and this one is no different. I just hope the Pentax brand doesn't survive.

Should you buy it?

If you are ready to reiterate your commitment to Pentax and DSLRs, then yes. It may be gigantic and expensive, but the Star Series 85mm is a thank you to the Pentax believers who have kept it up for so long. Enjoy it; you deserve it.

Vizio V Series 5.1 Soundbar Review: Putting The “V” In Value

Vizio V series soundbar

Vizio V Series 5.1 soundbar

"Vizio's V-5.1 5.1 soundbar is a cost-effective way to add good surround sound."

  • Easy setup

  • Immersive surround sound

  • Warm music playback

  • The middle channel is a weak link

  • Some lackluster "features"

For more than a decade, Vizio's stance on sound bars has consistently been about delivering tons of value without breaking the bank. If you were on the market to improve the sound of your TV without making a large investment, Vizio was often the best place to look.

Well, although we all live in the wrong world of 2020, at least one thing hasn't changed. Vizio's new $ 250 V-Series 5.1 soundbar system is an affordable surround sound setup – even if a few too many cost-saving measures have been taken this time.

Out of the box

I will always be amazed at how easy it is for Vizio to set up a soundbar. I was in no hurry to plug it in for testing, but if I raced a watch I would bet I could go from unpacking to listening to music in 10 minutes.

Vizio V series soundbarNick Woodard / Digital Trends

The system includes the bar itself, a pair of surround sound speakers, and a wireless subwoofer. Admittedly, there is not a ton here that could slow you down. But it's really just a matter of connecting your bar and your subwoofer to the power supply, making a physical connection between the bar and your display, laying the supplied speaker cable from the surround sound speakers to the subwoofer and turning everything on.

From there, the bar automatically searches for a content-generating entry. Be ready to act quickly and connect your phone via Bluetooth or stream something on your TV as the Vizio voice prompt is out of date after the first announcements that it is looking for an entry.

Apart from this little annoyance, that's all. No WiFi can be configured with this bar – which we'll discuss in more detail later – and there are no other setup frames that you can jump through. It's probably as close to plug and play as a soundbar system.

design

According to Vizio, this year's budgetary system was treated rather inconspicuously, which may be an understatement. The bar itself does not differ significantly from the latest sound bars that were on my media stand: With a length of 36 inches, it is only two inches shorter than the Sony HT-G700 that stood before it.

Vizio V-series soundbar remote controlNick Woodard / DigitalTrends

However, the rear speakers and subwoofer are small. The sub-cabinet houses a 5-inch woofer, and the speakers are slightly outshone by some older Vizio-Rears that I dug up for comparison. The size, frankly, worried me that Vizio might have become too compact (are we making ants home theater?) And sacrificed the sound. But as we will see shortly, the system grabs a punch for its size.

There are three drivers in the bar, one each for the front left, middle and right channel in a 5.1 system. Go to the back of the soundbar and you will encounter multiple connections. There's a retro 3.5mm stereo audio input (the good old red and white inputs) as well as an optical connector, an HDMI ARC connector, a 3.5mm AUX input and a USB connector Vizio says he only supports WAV and MP3 formats.

Would I have liked to see Vizio drop the old school stereo audio inputs in exchange for another HDMI port? Yes. Is this a pretty solid lineup of connections for the price, regardless of that? Also yes. Just keep in mind that certain connections limit your sound format options. The stereo inputs naturally only produce two-channel sound. You can receive surround sound through the digital optical link, but you will miss the DTS Virtual: X format that the V-Series is equipped with.

Vizio's standard soundbar remote control is also updated to be a bit rounder and gentler than its more brick-like older relative. The new remote control also appears to be more functional. With the buttons for EQ, Setup, Level and Effect you can play with the sound settings. I've never been a big fan of these old Vizio remotes, and it seems like Vizio is moving in the right direction with something that reminds me of my Nvidia Shield clicker.

properties

There are some legitimate features built into this bar, but some things that are "technical" are strangely cloaked by Vizio Marketing to be far more important than they really are.

Vizio V series soundbarNick Woodard / Digital Trends

You can stream music – and only Bluetooth. And that's good. The connection was solid and the sound was good. Despite all the advances in Bluetooth technology, Wi-Fi is still the king when it comes to streaming audio, and bars like the Yamaha YAS-209 have proven that it is possible to have this type of function in a budget bar.

The V-Series bar has a useful function called Front Surround Mode for setups where it is not possible to mount surround speakers in the back of the room. This workaround is to attach the rear speakers on either side of the soundbar, move the subwoofer to the front of the room, and then access Front Surround mode using your remote control. According to Vizio, the bar will use DTS Virtual: X to create virtual surround sound in this configuration. The result is acceptable, but there is a reason why speakers in the back of the room are called "ideal setup".

Then there are things like dual stereo mode – an example of a function we have termed “technical” – that sends the same audio to all five speakers. This feature works to be clear, I'm just not sure when this is needed or wanted. Watching movies is generally best in normal surround, where dialogs and actions take place in the front left, center, and right, and the back provides background noise. And listening to music is literally designed for left and right stereo sound. Although the dual stereo mode is functional, there is no ideal time to use it.

Vizio also advertises its soundbar as "Voice Assistant Ready" due to its aux port and Bluetooth connection. This is total marketing: If this soundbar is considered "Voice Assistant Ready" according to this standard, this also applies to every modern loudspeaker, receiver or even television with the same two connection options. Yes, you can connect an Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant device to the soundbar and it sends audio through the system. In fact, "voice assistant should be ready" to have a Wi-Fi connection and offer direct control through these smart devices. With this terminology, Vizio disguises its otherwise standard connections so that they are not.

To be fair to Vizio, there is a feature that allows the voice assistant in the bar to be active, even if the soundbar plays audio from another input, and the bar automatically mutes other sources so that the assistant can be heard. The same applies if you have a phone that is connected via Bluetooth. Unfortunately, you can accidentally transmit TikTok videos through your movie audio.

Audio quality

A few hundred words ago I teased how in love I was with products as small as the Vizio-Sub and the rear speakers that produce such a significant sound – and that's a lot of truth. For a solid week I've been throwing different content on it – from all kinds of music to various Netflix documentaries and TV shows, as well as the occasional Marvel movie and a Hamilton watch (or two) – and I can say that for sure people Those who buy this bar will be completely satisfied with this type and quality of surround sound.

Vizio V-series soundbar surround speakersNick Woodard / Digital Trends

It contains all the basic elements that make for a good surround setup. The front stage effectively captures action scenes, the rear speakers provide adequate immersion, and the sub, although it is only designed for 50 Hz, rumbled enough to elicit a random bark from my previously deeply sleeping dog. I was also pleasantly surprised by listening to the music, as the Vizio bar produced a generally warm sound that was balanced enough to have fun.

Overall, it's the sound you should expect from a $ 250 package. But this bar is certainly not without its quirks. In my experience, the apparently lackluster center channel is the most important among them. When viewing vocal dominant content like Netflix’s comedy series The Degenerates or the Down to Earth documentaries, this wasn’t a big problem. However, when switching to action sequences in Guardians of the Galaxy or the busier areas of Hamilton, the dialogue couldn't keep up with all the other events in the scene.

You can turn up both the center channel and the dialog using the Vizio remote control, which is helpful to a certain extent. However, it is clear that some content simply outperforms the center compared to the rest of the sound produced by the system. Also, I wasn't a big fan of the various EQ presets – including the movie and music options that you can switch between with the remote – as they seemed to bloat the sound. Essentially, these EQ settings turned up all frequencies, making the action a little more booming but much less sophisticated. Listening in direct mode was preferable to me.

DTS Virtual: X is also available in this soundbar. DTS Virtual: X is essentially the less popular alternative to Dolby Atmos and is said to be able to add virtualized 3D sound to any audio sent through the soundbar. It should also work with almost any speaker configuration, and although I had a more immersive experience when I turned it on, my partner could not notice it without pointing it out. This result makes sense because with everything that virtual technologies promise in terms of audio, you can only achieve so much with three front-firing drivers.

In addition to changing the levels of the dialog and center, you can also adjust the bass, treble, subwoofer, surround level and surround balance. Although this sound may have its flaws, it was a smart move by Vizio to make the bar's audio so customizable that it pleases the palate of most people.

Our opinion

Vizio's new 5.1 soundbar system may not be the best way to add surround sound to your setup – which is a traditional home theater, by the way – but it is once again one of the most enjoyable. With the decent characteristics and good sound it throws into the mix, the V-Series is a value for the masses.

Are there any better alternatives?

Frankly, it's hard to find another bar in this price range that offers a full 5.1 system with a subwoofer and rear speakers. The Yamaha YAS-209 is still our favorite bar because of its versatility, features, and sound, but it doesn't have surround speakers and is currently a bit more expensive for $ 300. I prefer the sound of the Sony HT-G700, although I don't prefer the price of almost $ 600.

How long it will take?

Not only are they cheap, the Vizio soundbars also seem to have a knack for durability. They have a standard one-year warranty, but the Vizio system I bought for my parents eight years ago still works. I can't guarantee that this bar will have the same durability, but it should last for a while.

Should you buy it

Yes. At this price, you really can't get real 5.1 sound anywhere else. Even if you need to fine-tune the audio and deal with the lack of meaningful features, the Vizio V Series 5.1 soundbar is undoubtedly a lot.

LG Gallery Series GX 4K HDR OLED TV Review | Gorgeous

"LG's most beautiful OLED television so far."

  • Breathtaking design

  • Excellent picture quality

  • First class HDR / contrast

  • Improved user experience

  • Excellent for playing

  • Expensive premium for design

  • Stand sold separately (only mounted on the wall)

LG made his bed. Now it has to be there.

After years as the only OLED TV manufacturer in the US, other manufacturers have collapsed. The first problem was Sony. And now Vizio is on board, Philips is sending an OLED to the USA and the budget brand Konka is getting involved.

Now that LG has so many roommates moving into the house it built, it has to struggle to secure the master suite. That means making the best and most sought after OLED TVs on the market. It is likely that LG will never be the cheapest option, so it has to rely heavily on premium options to seduce customers.

Enter the 2020 LG Gallery Series GX OLED. Its characteristic design elements are a so-called "No-Gap-No-Shadow" wall mounting system and an extremely thin profile. LG is an obvious answer to Samsung's approach to seamless wall mounting (available for select Samsung Q-Series TVs from 2017) and has created its own piece of art that somehow keeps the inherently ultra-thin properties of an OLED panel combined with sophisticated technology all electronics in a flat chassis.

LG GX OLED profile recordingDan Baker / Digital Trends

This stunning design comes at a price, albeit a lower premium than I expected. In fact, LG's OLED TV prices are lower across the board. However, a 65-inch GX costs $ 3,500, while the 65-inch CX step-down model, which offers the same excellent image quality, costs $ 2,800. Neither is affordable, but does the Gallery series deserve the $ 700 premium?

If looks could kill, the LG GX OLED would be a serial killer.

I'm not sure. I think the answer will depend on how much value aesthetics has for you. However, one thing is pretty certain. If looks could kill, the LG GX OLED would be a serial killer.

Out of the box

Entertaining story: I hadn't expected the GX-OLED television (pronounced G 10) for this test. I was expecting the CX model and when I took a very carefully orchestrated, socially distant delivery of this TV, I didn't look closely at the box.

To make an unboxing video during a global pandemic, I asked my video producer Dan Baker to unpack the TV himself while he was documenting B-Roll for our video. Then came the message: "There is no stand. No legs. I think we are missing some parts."

A quick phone call to LG revealed that I had deliberately been lined up with a GX-OLED and that the TV doesn't come with legs, but with the gapless wall bracket – an accessory that Samsung charges an additional $ 150 . The fact that I could not get my legs was an unfortunate consequence of closing offices due to coronavirus lock orders.

Dan Baker / Digital Trends

Three days later I got the legs and decorative plastic plates – accessories, extra for the LG.

Bottom line? This TV is designed for wall mounting. It makes no sense to put it on a sideboard or an entertainment booth, except maybe to enjoy its extra thin profile. If you are not planning a wall mounting, I will guide you to the CX series.

Made to assemble

I'm a fan of LG's wall mount for the GX OLED. The intelligent, one-piece design is compact, robustly built and easy to install. Thanks to the articulated arms, the TV can be pulled out of the wall. This is not so much for adjusting the horizontal viewing angle (which is not necessary with an OLED television with extremely wide visibility), but for easy access to the inputs of the television.

I was surprised at the weight of this GX OLED, which tips the scales at 65.7 pounds. It's not bulky and you can still mount the TV using the included drywall anchors, but I would recommend drilling in bolts if possible.

picture quality

I was impressed with the mini LED and micro LED TV technologies that other manufacturers are starting to mess around with, but at the end of the day my heart still belongs to the OLED and the GX is one of the nicest examples I have seen.

Despite brave efforts to alleviate the problems of LCD televisions and the LED backlights they rely on, there is nothing better than a self-emissive display for black levels, screen uniformity and breathtaking contrast. OLED is currently the best there is. And the 2020 OLEDs from LG look better than ever, even if the improvements are small compared to the previous year.

Currently the only real competition from LG comes from Sony. As mentioned earlier, this will change later this year. However, if I had to choose between a 2020 LG OLED and a 2020 Sony OLED, I would only have to choose the LG based on its features. The Sony A8H is coming, and I can compare LG directly to the Sony competition, but I have to imagine that a significant difference in picture quality that goes in Sony's favor is likely to be overridden by the better package offer of LG's OLED TVs is set.

How for the GX series? I don't see it as the best choice for everyone based on the cost. However, the aesthetics of the TV are undeniably sexy, and LG has the right to ask for a little more. The only reason prevents me from giving this TV a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. Otherwise, this TV is a big win for LG and its customers.

User experience

The GX OLED may be an eye-catcher from the outside, but almost all other improvements for 2020 are hidden inside.

WebOS, LG's smart TV platform and operating system, has been redesigned and the improvement is noticeable. While I have always believed that webOS is accessible and easy to use, it has felt a bit outdated lately.

Magic Motion Remote from LGDan Baker / Digital Trends

The new version of webOS looks and feels much more professional. There are fewer dabs of color and more transparent backgrounds, and the menus are simply easier to read.

The home screen shows multiple apps at the same time, making access to Disney +, Apple TV +, or ESPN as easy as Netflix or Hulu. You could always order the apps to your liking, but now you can see more of them at the same time.

The home screen also takes up less space, closer to a third of the bottom than half.

There are a few fun functions within webOS, one of which is unfortunately useless for the time being – again due to the corona virus. Sports alerts let users select their favorite teams and get on-screen alerts for game times, updates to game results and highlights highlighted at a glance.

Another new feature called "Who. Where. What? "Try to make Live TV more interactive by answering voice queries, who the actors are, where a scene is, and what products are displayed on the screen. It's a fun idea. But I still have to put it into practice implement.

In terms of voice interactions, LG's own voice assistant is more intelligent and powerful, recognizes natural language better and provides more personal answers. Interactions feel more like talking to a person than a robot. When the capabilities of the LG Assistant deteriorate, Google Assistant takes control. For example, LG's assistant can help you find content or change the channel, while Google Assistant intervenes to give you news and weather information, or to order a pizza.

The GX also offers far-field voice control if you want to use it. As with all LG OLEDs, the Magic Motion remote control from LG has a microphone and a microphone button. In the GX series, however, a microphone is now built into the TV and the wake-up words "Hi LG" trigger the wizard.

Improved processing

The heart of the 2020 OLED TV from LG (except for the entry-level BX) is the Alpha 9 Gen 3 processor. There are some valuable improvements associated with this. My favorite is a new A.I. Image mode that helps optimize image performance by analyzing ambient light in the room and correcting image settings on the fly.

This may sound familiar, but the function goes beyond the basic “eco modes” by adjusting the TV's electro-optic transmission function (EOTF) to maintain bright details and HDR highlights for the best picture, no matter how bright or a room may be dark. I found the feature to work well and I encourage owners to turn it on when they first set up the TV.

LG GX OLED heroDan Baker / Digital Trends

Other improvements are somewhat technical, but do lead to improvements in image quality. I noticed that the decontouring filter on the Alpha 9 Gen 3 better minimizes banding in wide color ranges, especially for low bit rate content where banding is often a problem. The result is a much smoother picture with fewer distractions.

LG's dynamic tone mapping has also been improved. For the viewer, this means a better HDR experience, in which bright highlights are retained, the brightest objects of interest have the best highlights, and areas with poor lighting retain details without blacks getting a hit.

LG has also added a feature to increase the peak brightness for SDR content, which allows it to look a little more vivid – like HDR – without juicing the entire image in a flashy way.

Speaking of picture mode: users will find that Filmmaker mode is installed on LG's OLEDs this year, including the GX. This image mode deactivates the hatred of all postprocessors, eliminates the soap opera effect, keeps the colors accurate and maintains the aspect ratio and the original frame rate.

To be honest, Filmmaker mode looks very similar to ISF Calibrated Dark. If I watch more content, I will definitely update my comment here. For ready-to-use image settings, I still recommend ISF Calibrated Bright or ISF Calibrated Dark as a starting point.

Gaming performance

Equipped with HDMI 2.1 connections with all technical data and all available player-friendly functions, the 2020 OLEDs from LG are a convincing argument for gamers who are looking for a large-format display to play with. So far, LG's OLED televisions are the only models that support variable refresh rate (VRR) in addition to Freesync and G-Sync. They also support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) with delay times of just 13 milliseconds.

LG's OLEDs are also the first to add an HGiG mode that should greatly improve the HDR gaming experience. HGiG stands for HDR Gaming Interest Group, which was founded to provide guidelines for TVs, consoles and game developers.

Simply put, this TV kicks your gaming monitor in the ass.

In short, HGiG supports televisions that behave in a predictable manner so that game rendering engines take over the entire HDR tone mapping and allow the TV to easily cut highlights at any peak brightness of the TV. This should help eliminate some of the poor picture quality we've seen recently in some HDR games.

While branding continues to be a problem for some applications, LG OLEDs are very useful for gamers this year. Simply put, this TV kicks your gaming monitor in the ass.

Our opinion

LG's Gallery series GX OLED offers a premium, but the additional investment pays off in beautiful design, an elegant wall-mounting system, and an improved user experience. If you take advantage of LG's excellent OLED picture quality, you have an amazing TV.

Is there a better alternative?

I think the LG CX OLED will make more sense for most people. It's not that slim and doesn't look that sexy on the wall. However, it is cheaper and offers the same image quality and features for the user as the GX, except for the aforementioned hands-free voice control.

For a non-OLED option, the Samsung Q90T could be considered for an equally high quality LCD / LED display.

If Vizio and Philips ship OLEDs in the United States, I will update this section of the review.

How long it will take?

Due to the support of HDMI 2.1 and all related functions, this television is positioned in such a way that it will continue to exist in the future.

guarantee

LG offers a 1-year limited warranty on parts and labor. This guarantee does not apply to image storage, also known as branding.

Should you buy it

Yes. If you appreciate the GX's slim profile and unique gap-free wall bracket and can afford the premium, then go for it. I can confidently say that I would buy the LG GX OLED immediately if the cost didn't matter. It is the most convincing television set that I have ever tested.

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 Review: The Best Game Controller

Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 Review Microsoft 3

Xbox One Elite Controller Series 2

"The Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is the best game controller we have ever used."

  • Huge buttons and triggers

  • Excellent control pad

  • Fully customizable rear paddle

  • Adjustable analog sticks

  • Very solid build

  • Case has lots of bells and whistles

Microsoft's standard Xbox One controller lacks the fancy DualShock 4 touch bar on the PS4 or the "HD Rumble" of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, but its reliability and design make it undoubtedly great. There is very little to improve – either by correcting features or adding new ones – but Microsoft has found a way with the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2.

With a price tag that matches the impressive design and build quality, it costs the equivalent of three Xbox One games at full price. Even so, it's easy to see why within a few minutes of using it. This is the best video game controller ever made and a simple recommendation for competitive gamers.

What is the same?

The Series 2 Xbox Elite Controller is based on the regular Xbox One controller, so the placement of buttons and sticks feels familiar. Both shoulder buttons and the triggers feel almost identical to the standard Xbox One controller in terms of driving distance and pressure required.

The connectors on the base of the controller reflect the normal model with a 3.5mm jack and the proprietary connector that came with the controllers of the 2013 console. Accessories provided for the standard controller should fit without any problems, unless they need to be wrapped around the back.

This is the best video game controller ever made.

Although the charging port is still next to the sync button, it's USB-C instead of micro-USB, so cable compatibility may be an issue.

Classic Xbox design

Lisa Marie Segarra / Digital Trends

The look can be deceptive, and although the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 looks like a standard Xbox One controller at first inspection and feels like a standard Xbox One controller, it offers a lot of bells and whistles that you won't find in the standard design.

The players will immediately notice that the directional pad is circular, which is strange. Fortunately, it is removable and can be replaced with a traditional cross-style directional pad. After toggling, it becomes the best d-pad I've ever used, with a firm tactile click that doesn't require excessive force. This design will be used for the upcoming Xbox Series X console, so it will be more common by the end of 2020.

Similar to third-party offerings like the Scuf Vantage, the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 has removable analog sticks that are held in place by magnets. They can be easily removed and replaced with the alternatives contained in the carrying case. Players who prefer a convex design can switch easily, as can those who want a shorter or larger racket.

However, the adjustable voltage regulator below is more impressive than the options offered. With an included key, players can move their sticks looser or tighter, depending on their preferences. I found it a bit loose by default, but it took less than a minute to repair and didn't require disassembly other than popping the stick out.

The tension of the triggers themselves cannot be adjusted as with the Scuf Vantage, but they do have a three-stage hair release system. By default, they move roughly to the standard controller, but flipping the switch can reduce that by more than half. For first person shooters, a short travel distance can increase the competitiveness of players and it is possible to leave them in different settings.

New features and customization

Lisa Marie Segarra / Digital Trends

The Series 2 corresponds to the first Elite Controller design from Microsoft and has four removable paddles on the back. By default, they are programmed on each of the four face buttons so you can keep your thumbs on the analog sticks while performing other functions. With the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox One or PC, these can be reprogrammed for other functions, including pressing a button on the analog sticks.

Multiple profiles for specific games or multiple users can be saved. If you hold down the special profile button on the front of the controller, the paddles are completely deactivated. This came in handy when playing hectic games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, so I didn't have to worry about accidentally swapping a weapon by pounding a paddle. Removing the paddles is a breeze as they are also magnetically connected. If a guest is against it, the removal takes only a few seconds.

The paddles can be completely reprogrammed.

Since the paddles work by pressing a smaller hidden button underneath, they leave a small hole when removed, which is hardly noticeable. No wires are visible inside, and dust or crumbs are unlikely to accumulate if left out permanently. Spending almost $ 200 on a failed controller and removing its biggest feature may seem silly, but the customization is valued above all.

The tote bag is great

Lisa Marie Segarra / Digital Trends

A carrying case is usually no longer considered once the controller has been removed, but Microsoft has chosen the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2. The bag has magnetic slots for all the accessories included. Aside from being easy to store, it improves the transportation of the controller without worrying about one of the small parts rolling around or falling out when the case is opened.

The housing has slots for all the accessories supplied.

It also has an integrated charging station and a hidden cable connection, so you don't have to remove the controller to charge it. It's not a necessity, but it does add a bit of flair to justify the cost.

Our opinion

Yes, it's expensive, but the Xbox Elite Controller Series 2 is a phenomenal controller. You will find it difficult to use something else after spending a few hours playing it, and it was difficult for us to find bugs.

Is there a better alternative?

Provided that the price does not matter, there is no better alternative.

How long it will take?

The battery can last up to 40 hours when fully charged. The controller is designed to withstand abuse and is much harder than the standard Xbox One controller.

Should you buy it

Yes, unless you are a very occasional player who doesn't need the frills or doesn't care. It is the best video game controller I have ever used.

Electrolux EFLS627UIW 4.4 Cubic Feet 600 Series Front Load Washer Review

Electrolux EFLS627UIW 4.4 cubic feet 600 series front loading washing machine

"When used correctly, the stain-fighting power of this Electrolux machine is impressive."

  • Reversible door washing

  • Fit a lot in the machine

  • Better performance when using a POD

  • Steam option for deep cleaning

  • Long wash cycles overall

  • Bad stain remover if only detergent is used

  • No hand washing option

The Electrolux Perfect Steam ™ washing machine with front loader and LuxCare Wash and SmartBoost was developed to combat stains. When used correctly with the right stain control agents, it does a good job. However, these functions are a waste for people who only want to use detergent in their laundry and nothing else.

Big and brave

The white (also available in gray) washing machine is full of frills, and most of them have one goal: stain removal. In true Electrolux fashion, the front loader model is attractive – the type of machine that you would expect in a custom home. Perhaps our favorite design feature is the reversible door of the washing machine, so it can be used in almost any large room with installation restrictions.

In true Electrolux fashion, the front-loading washing machine is attractive – the type of machine that you would expect in a custom home.

The 4.4 cubic foot washer measures 38 x 27 x 32 inches (H x W x D) and is therefore not ideal for more compact washrooms. These dimensions are not far from the slightly larger 4.8 cubic foot Maytag MHW6630HC0. The Elektrolux accompanying dryer Electrolux EFME627UTT is similar in size. Like most washing machines these days, you can purchase an optional 15-inch pedestal on which you can place it so you don't have to bend down to use the machine.

Simple panel

The Electrolux Front Load Perfect Steam washing machine has a lot of settings and we found that navigating was a breeze. The cycle selector offers options for heavy duty, whitest whites, normal, active wear, color, 15-minute quick wash, delicate wash, rinse and spin and clean washing machine. Once you have selected a setting, you can adjust the temperature (disinfect, hot, warm, cold and tap color), the type of floor (solid floor, max, heavy, normal and light) and the spin speed (max, high), medium , low and no spin).

For additional stain control, you can also choose between StainSoak and Perfect Steam. When using the StainSoak feature, you can also choose the type of stain you want to remove (chocolate, blood, or a stain). There are also options for Extra Rinse, Wrinkle Release, Extended Refresh, Delay Rinse and Control Lock. As with most washing machines, there are restrictions on what options you can add to a wash.

On the far right of the control panel you will find the Start / Pause, Cancel and PODS buttons. On the far left of the machine is a pull-out drawer into which you can fill detergent, fabric softener, bleach and even the pods. If you choose to use a pod for your washing needs, also press the PODS button on the control panel. There is also a stain treatment liquid compartment that you want to fill when using the StainSoak function. This option extends a cycle by approximately 10 minutes.

The LED display also has a variety of instructions. In addition to the large digital timer (you can see how much time is left from a distance), you can choose the type of stain you want to treat, mute the sound, and check if your wash combination is environmentally friendly. The letters "close door" light up when the door is not locked.

Once you have loaded items into the device, press the power button to select your settings. The digital display shows relevant symbols and an estimated time how long the charging process will take. We should note that many of the cycles on this machine take well over an hour. However, if you're in a hurry and have a small load, you can use the 15-minute cycle to clean clothes that aren't stained.

A stain on performance

With all of the stain removal options available, we were keen to love the Electrolux 600 series washing machine. Unfortunately not so much. We can say that using a POD instead of a standard detergent made a significant difference. This is probably because a POD usually contains more than just laundry detergent. In our tests, however, as in our practice, we only used basic HE detergent and did not add any additional stain control or detergent.

Using a POD instead of a standard detergent makes a significant difference in performance.

We ran different loads over a few months and were satisfied with the results. When it was time to test the stain removal functions, the results were a bit mixed. We washed a basic load of minimal stain clothing on Delicates and selected Normal Soil, Cold, and Low Spin to remove almost all of the stains. To be fair: an item had a stain that we have been trying to remove for months.

To really put it to the test, we sprayed cooking oil, red wine and hot sauce over T-shirts, heavy cotton shorts, polos, khaki pants and a buttoned shirt. We leave these stains on for a few hours. We did not use a stain remover and washed these items with the "Normal" setting with warm temperature, normal bottom, medium spin and perfect steam. While these settings may not be optimal to combat stains in this machine, we usually test all washing machines. Sixty-eight minutes later, when the cycle was complete, we still saw the residue of some stains. When washing the items again in a longer cycle using some of the stain control settings specific to this model, the results were much better and almost all of the stains were gone.

warranty information

The Electrolux washing machine comes with a one-year guarantee that covers parts and labor. During the second year of operation, Electrolux pays for the replacement of defective parts. In addition, the manufacturer will cover the inner wash tub for the life of the product and the wash tub drive motor for ten years. Workers are no longer included after the first year.

Our opinion

In the end, the Electrolux Front Load Perfect steam scrubber with LuxCare Wash and SmartBoost can do a good job of fighting stains, but you need to make sure that you are using the right stain remover and settings. If you are someone who likes to use PODs, you will appreciate the space available in the dispenser and will likely get more stain control power from them. However, if you don't want to add extra detergents to your laundry load, this may not be the best solution.

Is there a better alternative?

We were more impressed with the Electrolux EFLS537UIW front loading washing machine with LuxCare washing system, which costs less and removes stains better when only detergent is used. However, the model is a bit smaller. That said, Electrolux models generally have deceptively large tubs, so you should be able to easily fit king-size duvets into them. It really depends on what you want, and our washer and dryer shopping guide can help you decide which features are most important to you.

How long it will take?

Front load washers typically do not last as long as top load machines. usually have a longer lifespan than front loading washing machines. The experts say a washing machine should last between 10 and 14 years, and is probably closer to 10 than 14.

Should you buy it

We weren't so impressed with the machine's stain-fighting abilities – although there were plenty of them. For a washing machine that costs over $ 1,200, it really should have been better to clean clothes. If you need a reversible door washing machine, we recommend that you check out other Electrolux models with some basic stain control features.

Electrolux EFME627UTT 8.0 Cubic Feet 600 Series Front Load Dryer Review

Electrolux washer and dryer side by side

Electrolux EFME627UTT 8.0 cubic feet 600 front loader electric dryer

"This top-of-the-range model offers a variety of functions that are ideal for a busy family or a household."

  • wrinkle control

  • Spacious

  • steam option

  • Fast drying cycle

  • Cycles can run longer than the assigned time

  • Short cycle works best with smaller loads

The electric Elektrolux front-loading steam dryer with PredictiveDry and immediate update is very spacious and can process several blankets. The best thing is that the internal LED lighting of this model can help you find the missing sock in the columns of the dryer.

Built for bulky items

The white dryer (also available in gray) offers all first-class functions, including steam with wrinkle removal. This Electrolux model in combination with the washing machine of the Electrolux 600 series gives even the most boring washrooms in the basement style. Like most dryers, the Electrolux has a reversible door. Perhaps our preferred design feature is the basket style lint filter, as it is easy to clean and has twice as much space to collect dryer waste.

The 8.0 cubic foot dryer measures 38 x 27 x 31.5 inches (H x W x D). Although you can get an accessory to stack it on the washing machine, you will probably enjoy it more if you place it side by side. Page. The accompanying disk of the Electrolux is similar in size. If you're looking for a more ergonomic setup, an optional 15-inch base is available, so you can use the machine without stooping.

The Electrolux Front Load Perfect Steam 600 dryer is equipped with user-friendly settings. You can select cycles for heavy / hand towels, allergen, normal, active wear, mixed load, 15-minute quick drying, delicates, time drying and instant updating. Once you have selected a cycle, you can adjust the temperature (disinfect, high, normal, low and air drying), the degree of dryness (max, high, normal, less and moist) and the drying time (auto, 75 minutes) 60 min, 45 min and 30 min). Additional options include Perfect Steam, Anti-Static, Eco, Wrinkle Release, Extended Tumble, Delay Time and Control Lock. The options you choose depend on which drying cycle you originally selected.

On the far right of the control panel are buttons for start / pause and cancel. The LED display has a large digital timer (you can see the remaining time some distance away) and information about the sound of the machine, the lock and whether it is an environmentally friendly charge. You do not have to ask yourself whether it is time to clean the fluff filter, because if so, the letters "Clean fluff" light up on the display. Once you've loaded items into the device, press the power button to select your settings and press Start. The timer on the digital display tells you how long the cycle should last.

drying Dynamo

We used the Electrolux dryer for a few months and were happy with the results. In general, the cycles ran slightly longer than indicated on the digital display. However, it usually didn't take more than ten minutes. You can also change the settings during a cycle by pressing the Start / Pause button, making the new selection, and then pressing Start.

The 15-minute drying cycle works excellently for small loads in an emergency.

During our tests, we made two loads of different items, including delicates, tablecloths and shirt blouses. We dried the clothes with Activewear, Normal Temperature and Normal Dry as well as the automatic time setting. After 35 minutes the rather heavy load came out dry. In addition, we put a dry, wrinkled shirt in the dryer and activated the instant update cycle with the "perfect steam" option. Although the top did not come out perfectly, most of the wrinkles were removed. We appreciated the 15-minute drying cycle, which works great with small loads.

warranty information

The Electrolux dryer has a one-year warranty on parts and labor. During the second year of operation, Electrolux pays to replace defective parts, but after the first year there are no more workers.

Our opinion

The Electrolux Front Load Perfect steam dryer is a solid machine. This top-of-the-range model offers a variety of functions that are ideal for a busy family or a household. However, if you only need a simple dryer, this model is more than you want.

Is there a better alternative?

We were impressed with this dryer and are comparable to other high-end models available. If you're looking for a solid, less frills model that costs less, check out the LG DLE7100W. The dryer is a bit smaller at 7.3 cubic feet and costs about half the price. When you buy a dryer, you should make a list of the main features. Read our washer and dryer shopping guide for an idea of what's available.

How long it will take?

According to experts, this Electrolux front-loading dryer should have a lifespan of 10 to 13 years.

Should you buy it

The Electrolux Front Load Perfect steam dryer of the 600 series is impressive and equipped with functions that are extensive. You'll pay for it though – this dryer costs over $ 1,300. While this is expensive, you are unlikely to replace it until ten years from now.
