How To Apply Serums, Oils & Concentrates

Serums, concentrates and oils are high quality skin care products, so every drop counts! If you've ever wondered whether you are using too much product or applying too often, we have some simple tips to follow so that you don't waste a single dollop of these luxurious face oils or serums.

Why should you include serums, concentrates, or oils in your skin care routine?

Before we dive into the best way to layer these products, why would you even want to use them? It can be confusing to decipher the difference between the three. Face oils are designed to help moisturize and retain moisture in the skin and usually contain herbal and herbal ingredients to help nourish the skin.

In comparison, serums contain a high concentration of active ingredients that target a variety of skin problems at once (such as wrinkles and fine lines). They usually have a gel-like texture as well. Concentrates, on the other hand, focus their high potency on one active ingredient and usually have the consistency of a light lotion.

An example of a classic serum is our Citrus & Kale Potent C + E Serum, which contains a cocktail of stabilized vitamin C, citrus fruit oils, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (also known as vitamin C salt), and vitamin E to improve the appearance of skin health younger looking skin.

How to Layer Serums, Oils, and Concentrates

We recently looked at the best serum or oil for your skin type. Now that you've decided on your skin care superstars, it's time to properly layer these products. All of your skin care products should be used in a specific order to get the most out of each product. Ideally, you should limit your selection to one or two serums, oils and / or concentrates so that they can be effectively absorbed into the skin.

We recommend starting your skin care products with the thinnest consistency and ending with the richest:

  1. Serums
  2. Concentrates
  3. Oils

After cleansing and toning, start layering your facial serum, the product with the thinnest consistency as it is the most efficient at delivering the active ingredients to the skin. Next up are concentrates, followed by facial oils. Face oils come last as they prevent water loss and "seal" the formulations into the skin.

How Eminence Organics Product support team leader Alicia Hawthorne explains, "Applying a facial oil after the serums helps lock in the moisture and nutrient-rich ingredients you just applied to the skin while allowing optimal penetration of the product."

When and how much serum should I apply?

As Alicia recommends, apply a thin layer (three to four drops) of each product all over your face. You can use the serum every day during your morning and evening routine. Gently press the product into your complexion and don't forget your neck area. Allow time for each product to soak into the skin to maximize results. Then, apply your favorite Eminence Organics moisturizer to lock in the good.

What if you don't layer them properly?

The main reason for using these products in a specific order is for absorption. The right layering of skin care products will determine how effectively the formulation can penetrate the skin. If you applied a thicker, richer formula first, it could result in poor product absorption for the following products. That being said, Eminence Organics moisturizers are a little bit extraordinary which makes them more versatile. Our skin care products do not contain mineral oils that could create a barrier on the skin, allowing our moisturizers to penetrate through the face oils! Feel free to apply our oils before or after your moisturizer, or add a few drops to your favorite Eminence Organics moisturizer. If you are using a different brand of moisturizer, stick to the order of serums, concentrates, and then oils, followed by that moisturizer.

If you apply products in the wrong order, pilling can occur and the skin can feel sticky or sticky to the touch. But as Alicia advises, waiting about a minute between steps should help prevent pilling from occurring. In addition, they can irritate your skin and cause new skin problems. According to The Skincare Edit, applying serums to oils can leave your skin dry and dehydrated because not enough water is reaching your skin.
