Nintendo Switch OLED Review: An Upgrade’s an Upgrade

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs on a Nintendo Switch OLED.

Nintendo Switch OLED

RRP $ 350.00

"The Nintendo Switch OLED may not be what gamers have dreamed of, but it is undeniably a technological advance for the Switch."

advantages

  • Improved screen

  • Improved onboard audio

  • Much better stand

  • Cleaner dock design

disadvantage

  • No upgrades for the TV

  • Memory is still small

Much of the discussion about the Nintendo Switch OLED model has centered on what it isn't as opposed to what it is. From the first announcement, fans were noisily disappointed with the lack of three main features of the upgrade: 4K graphics when docked, an improvement in resolution in handheld mode, and a battery boost. That left many to write off the system entirely as a minor midlife switch upgrade rather than the version they envisioned.

So let's talk about what the Switch OLED actually is: It's clearly a better version of the Nintendo Switch. It has a bigger, brighter screen that makes the old Switch look washed out. That alone would be enough to make this a notable improvement, and it's not the only novelty here. The question is whether or not the difference is enough, considering the Switch is a four-year-old console that has lagged behind technological advances in gaming for nearly half a decade. The answer is probably no, but it hardly matters if Nintendo plays by its own rules.

The Nintendo Switch OLED optimizes an already great console with a better screen, cleaner audio, and a stand that dwarfs the old Switch. For those who prefer to play their games in handheld or tabletop mode, it's an upgrade worthwhile as your Switch ages. However, those who play docked stay in the dust, making it a somewhat enigmatic addition to the Switch family.

See the light

The only major difference you need to know about here is the console's eponymous OLED screen. Given how unimaginative the name of the system is, you have to assume that Nintendo is pinning a lot of its hopes on this aspect. There is a good reason for this, however: the new OLED panel is undoubtedly better than the Switch's outdated LED panel.

For starters, it's bigger. While the normal switch has a 6.2-inch screen surrounded by a thick black bezel, the OLED extends to seven inches to make better use of the switch's space. There's a noticeable difference, especially since video games tend to use the smallest amount of text when it comes to the user interface.

A Nintendo Switch OLED and a 2019 Switch model side by side.

More importantly, everything is brighter on the OLED panel. You can see this clearly by simply launching the home menu on an old and a new console. The original Switch almost looks like it has a white haze over it and the colors are dulled a little. On the other hand, everything is crisp on the OLED screen; it doesn't feel like anything is lost in the digital translation. When testing the Metroid Dread on it, I switched back and forth between my TV and the OLED in handheld mode. I quickly found that the picture on the OLED was just looking clearer than it was on my aging TV. Because of this, I decided to play the entire game portable.

The new OLED panel is undoubtedly better than the Switch's outdated LED panel.

For disappointed fans, a better screen was only half what they'd hoped for. The console does not offer any resolution increase in handheld mode, which means that like its predecessor, it is limited to 720p. A lack of 1080p sounds like a big deal on paper, but ultimately doesn't make that much of a difference on a seven-inch screen. Instead, OLED gives Nintendo's gaming a boost where it really matters. A game like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example, shines on the console with its colors that appear in all their shining splendor.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs on a Nintendo Switch OLED.

I'm a Switch gamer who plays in handheld mode almost exclusively, even when I'm at home. From that perspective, the new screen is a remarkable improvement for me. I wouldn't have rushed to buy it based on the datasheet, but now that I'm using it I can't imagine going back to my old model.

Undeniable upgrade

The other upgrades to the OLED are more subtle in comparison, though they justify the $ 50 price tag. For one, the system has a completely redesigned stand that makes the flimsy plastic of the old switch look like a gruesome joke. The entire rear lower half of the console can be folded out and remains in place at every angle. It goes so far back that the console can lie almost flat with a slight incline. The Switch feels a lot more stable in tabletop mode, which makes the dream of playing on the plane feel a lot more realistic. It no longer feels like the switch is falling over in a strong gust of wind.

The stand of the Nintendo Switch OLED compared to the 2019 Switch model.

Audio also gets a boost here, which is a small but nice touch. When playing in handheld mode, the onboard speakers just sound a bit louder and crisper overall. Similar to the way the new display removes the washed-out haze of the switch, this also applies here to a more subtle degree. The audio upgrade doesn't make a difference if you're playing with headphones on the go, but it's nice for a lazy couch player like me.

The other changes here are less important, though it's hard to complain a lot. The internal memory of the switch has been doubled from 32 GB to 64 GB. That number is still pretty skimpy considering the upcoming Steam Deck has 512GB of storage if you go for the top of the line. Switch games are smaller than PC games, and you can still save space by physically buying Nintendo's game, but those who make a living from downloads will still need a microSD card anyway.

The other upgrades to the OLED are more subtle in comparison, though they justify the $ 50 price tag.

The aesthetic component is also a nice plus, but hardly a reason for an upgrade. The white Joy-Cons look particularly clean when they are attached to the screen so that it looks less like a toy. The white dock looks similarly good and goes particularly well with a PlayStation 5 in your entertainment center. The interior of the dock just looks cleaner, too, with a sleek black interior that doesn't feel quite as scratched as the regular dock. I wouldn't advise anyone buying a console for the colors (nothing different with the Joy-Cons so don't expect a drift fix here), but it's a good bonus if you get one.

A Nintendo Switch OLED model in its dock next to a regular Switch dock.

“Bonus” is the key word here, so to speak. Aside from the screen and stand, the OLED's new features are nice but negligible add-ons. The only other major boost here is the battery, though it depends on which Switch you already own. For those who bought a base Switch in 2017 and didn't upgrade to the new SKU in 2019, the OLED features its larger battery size. It wasn't worth spending $ 300 on an otherwise identical product back then, but it's more enticing now in the context of an actually polished system.

Neglect from television gamers

The most puzzling thing about the Switch OLED is that it doesn't really bring any real improvements to docked gaming. While handheld and tabletop modes get a nice boost here, they run exactly the same on your TV. Given that Nintendo previously released the handheld-focused Switch Lite, you'd think its next system would tackle the other side of the hybrid console's player base. Amazingly, that's not the case here.

What we are left with is a console upgrade that is a straightforward recommendation for some gamers but completely irrelevant to others.

There's only one real difference when it comes to TV gaming: the redesigned dock has a LAN port to support wired online gaming. Theoretically, this should make online experiences more stable, which the Nintendo Switch urgently needs. Of course, it's not that simple. Online multiplayer is a two-way (or four-way or 100-way) street. When I'm wired, I know I won't have Wi-Fi problems, but that doesn't mean my opponents won't have problems. Most of my testing with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate went smoothly, but every now and then I would jump into a four-player game and experience stutters or delays. A wired internet connection only really works if everyone has access to it, which requires gamers to extensively upgrade their docks. In more practical terms, the wired connection will be a niche advantage for competitive gamers.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Dock.

What we are left with is a console upgrade that is a straightforward recommendation for some gamers but completely irrelevant to others. Buying a console for the first time? The OLED is a breeze. Are you a handheld gamer looking to step up a notch? It's a good excuse to upgrade when you have the cash to spare. But for those who only play on TV, there's practically no reason to buy one – especially since the dock will be available separately through the Nintendo website.

With Nintendo denying reports that a 4K model is in the works, it's impossible to know if we'll ever get a real Switch Pro. For now, this could be the last upgrade we'll get in the life of the Switch. It's certainly not the change we were hoping for, but I'd be lying if I said the new display isn't impressive. This is the model that Nintendo should have brought out when it launched.

Our opinion

The Nintendo Switch OLED model is an improvement on an already good console, period. No, it can't do 4K and it doesn't feel like a midlife change to PS4 Pro size, but an upgrade is an upgrade. The new OLED panel is a huge improvement that makes the Switch's old screen look washed out in comparison. A new stand and better onboard audio both justify the additional $ 50, though the other enhancements are somewhat redundant. It may not be the upgrade the system needs after four years in the market, but it is the definitive model to buy if you don't already own a Switch.

Is there a better alternative?

It's certainly better than a regular switch if you're handheld gaming. If you want more power, the Steam Deck is just around the corner (if you can get one).

How long it will take?

The redesigned dock reduces the chance of hair scratches on the screen. Is your Switch still working four years later? Then expect it to chug on in a similar fashion.

Should you buy it?

Yes sir. If you don't already have a Switch, there's no reason not to start here. It's also a worthwhile upgrade for those who play in handheld mode, though TV gamers won't get much benefit from it.

Google Pixel 5a 5G Review: A Slight but Worthwhile Upgrade

Google Pixel 5a functional picture with the screen on.

Google Pixel 5a 5G

RRP $ 449.00

"The Pixel 5a continues to live up to its camera expectations and offers smooth performance, expressive photos and lowlight functions at an affordable price."

advantages

  • Excellent camera performance

  • Smooth, clean software

  • IP67 water and dust resistance

  • Affordable price for its skills

disadvantage

  • Standard, a bit boring design

  • No high refresh display

Google's Pixel 5a 5G was the subject of so many leaks at the time that there are no surprises here – but it never had to be. The Pixel A series has always been cheaper, scaled-down versions of Google's main phones while offering the same high quality camera hardware and software performance. This has not changed with the Google Pixel 5a either.

In terms of hardware, it's a step up from the Google Pixel 4a 5G, with a larger battery and IP67 water and dust resistance. Conversely, it leaves out some of the premium features you get on the Pixel 5, such as the increased RAM and high-resolution 90Hz display. Overall, it continues to deliver exactly what users of the Google Pixel A series want: clean software, a strong camera and no major disadvantages.

Design and display

The design of the Pixel 5a 5G is largely unchanged from its predecessor, the 4a 5G, and borders on boredom. It's a standard candy bar design with sleek black plastic, rounded sides, and a screen with narrow bezels. The hole punch selfie camera is located at the top right, and a fast-reacting fingerprint sensor is located on the back. There is a 3.5mm audio jack on top, just like the 4a 5G.

The big change compared to the previous model is not visible, but a significant one. They now have IP67 water and dust resistance, which means the Pixel 5a can withstand full immersion in water, splashes, and rain, as well as a day at the beach. That was missing from previous generations and it is unusual to find even mid-range phones these days that are not waterproof. So it's nice to see that this durability issue has been fixed.

The screen is largely unchanged. It's a 6.34-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080. That's a slight change from the 6.2-inch screen on the 4a 5G, which gives you an aspect ratio of 20: 9 while the resolution and pixel density remain the same at 413 pixels per inch (ppi). The viewing angles are great both indoors and outdoors, with high maximum brightness. Videos, games, and text look crisp and I didn't notice any pixelation while using it.

The only thing I missed was the Pixel 5's high-resolution 90Hz screen, which allows for smoother scrolling, animations, and transitions. After you get used to the high-resolution 90Hz screen on the Pixel 5 and 120Hz Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, it is difficult to go back to a normal 60Hz refresh rate.

Google Pixel 5a shows apps.Ajay Kumar / Digital Trends

Performance and battery

The Pixel 5a 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. This is the same configuration as the Pixel 4a 5G and the same chipset as the Google Pixel 5, so I won't go into too much detail on performance. Everything is smooth enough for everyday use with no noticeable app slowdowns.

It also handles demanding games like Asphalt 9 and Genshin Impact without chugging, although the lack of the high-refresh panel is noticeable. Even so, it will get the job done with no major problems. There's nothing more to say about that.

Battery life is a big step up from the Pixel 4a 5G. With a 4,680 mAh cell, it's one of the more powerful batteries I've seen on a mid-range phone, and significantly more durable than the 3885 mAh cell on the Pixel 4a 5G. I used an average of one and a half to two days of regular use before charging, with normal daily use consisting of surfing, tweeting, gaming, and photography. There's no wireless charging, but the included adapter gives you 18 watts of fast wired charging.

It will get the job done with no major problems.

Over time, the phone's adaptive battery feature also learns your app usage and habits. That means it finds out which apps you use the most and what times you use them (for me it's Twitter and Reddit 24/7), and it makes sure that apps you don't use often aren't Waste of energy in the background. Over time, this feature should be able to learn your habits and optimize performance better to get more juice out.

A powerful camera

Camera features are why you're here for the Pixel 5a 5G and the phone doesn't disappoint in that regard. On paper, the hardware is identical to the Pixel 4a 5G. The main sensor is a 12.2 megapixel (MP) camera with a 16 MP ultrawide camera with a 117 degree field of view. The 8MP front camera works perfectly well for selfies and videos. But it's Google's software chops that really make the sensors glow.

In good lighting, the main sensor takes excellent pictures with lots of detail, without noise or blurring. Despite a brutally bright and sunny day that can often hide the automatic exposure of smaller phones, all the shots I took while walking in the park turned out to be beautiful. The colors were accurate, vivid without being oversaturated, and the greens stood out particularly well in the contrast between sunlight and shadow.

Taking pictures with the ultra-wide 16MP camera gives you a much larger field of view of 117 degrees. It's marked 0.6x in your camera app and allows you to capture a lot more of your surroundings and background. It's useful for landscape photography, and I enjoyed using it to capture the entire perimeter of the fountain and pond in the park.

But it's Google's software chops that really make the sensors glow.

There are some tradeoffs with the ultrawide camera. While the barrel distortion is not significant, some of the finer details in the recording are lost. Zooming in on leaves and branches reveals more artifacts and debris than if you were just shooting with the standard 12.2 MP sensor. And it is also worth noting that there is no telesensor. There is a 2x zoom option in the camera app, but it is a digital zoom, not an optical one, so there is a corresponding loss of quality there as well.

Pixel 5a night vision example.

Google Pixel 5a 5g Review Portrait mode example 1500x1000

Unsurprisingly, lowlight photography is another of the Pixel 5a's strengths. On a cloudy day in my kitchen, the phone automatically activated Night Sight to capture the colors of the slowly ripening banana and the pattern of the granite tabletop behind it. You can also enable night vision in portrait mode, which gives you access to a variety of powerful onboard editing options to control things like background blur and color pop, as well as enable black and white shooting.

Among the other features included, you also get astrophotography, which, like the Pixel 5, lets you take vivid shots of the night sky. For video recording, the phone can process 1080p and 4K at 60 frames per second. The capture of people kayaking in the lake was smooth, with minimal jerking or autofocus panning issues. I was even able to track an airplane flying overhead and take several clear shots.

Pixel 5a camera app.

Pixel 5a portrait mode.

Software and connectivity

The Pixel 5a is running the latest version of Android 11. It's Google's clean version of Android that most people are probably familiar with. The 5a is guaranteed to receive operating system and security updates for three years, so you are sure to receive the upcoming Android 12.

In terms of unique features, there are various smarts and integrations from the Google Assistant. You can identify songs, you can put the Google Assistant on hold for a call using the "Hold for me" feature in your phone app, view calls and identify songs. It also has a built-in recorder that can automatically create transcripts, which I found particularly useful for recording interviews and referencing quotes.

In terms of connectivity, the Pixel 5a 5G supports Sub-6 5G, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. I've tested mine on T-Mobile, but it's compatible with all the major US carriers, Japanese operator SoftBank, and Google's Project Fi.

Price and availability

The Google Pixel 5a 5G will only be available in the US and Japan. In the US, it will be available from the Google Store and Google Fi for $ 449 or through a subscription program for $ 15 per month. In Japan, it will also be available from the Google Store for 51,700 yen.

Our opinion

The Google Pixel 5a doesn't make promises it can't deliver. It's not a generational leap from the Pixel 4a 5G – the differences are pretty minor at best – but it does improve in key areas like waterproofness and battery life. Camera performance continues to be as expected, software is clean, and performance is smooth, so you get a great mid-range phone at a reasonable price.

Is there a better alternative?

If you already own the Google Pixel 4a 5G, the differences are in the IP67 sealing and improved battery life, which isn't worth the upgrade. On the other hand, if you have an older Pixel 4a, you'll also benefit from the faster processor, 5G connectivity, bigger screen, and two rear cameras, making the investment a much more worthwhile investment.

On the high end, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE costs around $ 100 to $ 150 more on average, but it gives you a crisp 120Hz screen, triple rear camera array, wireless charging, and much more powerful processors and specs. There is currently a shortage of other compelling mid-range phone options in the US alongside the non-5G iPhone SE, but there is no shortage of competitive options like the OnePlus Nord 2 5G in the international market.

One last thing to keep in mind is that Google has already announced the existence of the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro that use the new Tensor processor. So if you're willing to wait another year, we expect a future unconfirmed Pixel 6a to have a version of the same new chipset.

How long it will take?

The Google Pixel 5a 5G comes with a one-year warranty as standard, but you can expect it to last a lot longer. Although it shares the same Snapdragon 765G processor, it is guaranteed to receive operating system and security updates for three years to keep it feeling new. It also has IP67 water and dust resistance, which gives it more durability than previous generations.

Should you buy one?

Yes. As a mid-range phone with a great camera, clean software, long-lasting battery, and water resistance, the Pixel 5a doesn't have many comparable competitors. However, if you already own a Pixel 4a 5G, the difference isn't big enough to be worth the upgrade.

Ring Video Doorbell 3 Review: Not a Proper Upgrade

Ring video doorbell 3 rating with silver front plate

"I wanted to be excited about the third generation Ring Video doorbell, but it wasn't as impressive as it should be."

  • Great two-way audio

  • Fantastic app

  • Easy to install

  • Alexa compatible

  • Fisheye distortion

  • Doesn't work with Google Assistant

The Ring Video Doorbell 2 was such a success that it reached our list of top video doorbells from 2020. So you can bet if the Bell video doorbell 3 came out, there were high expectations. Has the third generation model introduced some exciting new features? Here's what I found out when I tried it.

Ring video doorbell 3 with silver front plate

installation

As with most wireless video doorbells, installing the ring video doorbell is a breeze. All you have to do is screw the mounting bracket onto your door frame, insert the battery and attach the doorbell to the mounting bracket. The instructions in the app show you step by step how to set everything up, including connecting the new doorbell to your home's Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz).

After installation, you can use the doorbell to connect the doorbell to other ring products in your home, e.g. B. with other indoor / outdoor cameras from Ring, intelligent light bulbs, path and step lights and the Ring Solar Floodlight. After everything is connected, you can create tasks for the devices to work together. For example, if someone rings the doorbell, you can have your porch or other lights turn on automatically.

Ring video doorbell 3 batteryAlina Bradford / Digital Trends

If you want to hardwire the Ring Video doorbell 3, it's pretty easy too, as the app guides you through the app. Just make sure that you have a connection with a maximum of 8-24 VAC and 40VA and a doorbell transformer with 50/60 Hz. If you do not know this or do not know what it means, you may need to consult a professional installer.

design

When it comes to design, you will immediately find that the third generation device is a small piece in terms of video doorbells. The Ring Video Doorbell 3 is 5.1 inches tall and 2.4 inches wide and really sticks out of your door frame (or wherever you install it) and sticks out like an aching thumb. Choosing a slimmer doorbell such as the Nest Hello, the Arlo video doorbell or maybe even the older Ring Pro is sure to have a less visual impact. The front panel is available in two colors: silver and black. So you have a choice of how this affects the atheism of your front door.

Ring video doorbell 3 front panelsAlina Bradford / Digital Trends

A major design improvement over the last Ring Video doorbell is that the company made it easier to remove the front panel so you can access the battery. This may seem small, but nobody wants to struggle with their doorbell just so they can charge the battery. It simply clicks in and out with a small push. Once the cover is removed, pull out the battery and charge it with a USB cable that comes with the doorbell.

The carillon in the ring video doorbell 3 is not very loud. It sends notifications to your phone. However, if you don't carry your phone with you, you may not hear it. Couple the ring 3 with the RingAt just $ 30, this is a great way to fix the problem. The doorbell is a separate device that you plug into an outlet in your home. From there, pair it with the doorbell. When the button on the doorbell is pressed, the doorbell also sounds. It's loud and has a variety of chimes to choose from in the app, including special Christmas chimes.

Video and audio quality

In terms of video quality, nothing has improved since the second generation. This third generation model still has a 160 degree field of view at 1080p HD, which you would expect with video doorbells, so no complaints. The video is really clear when there are objects just a few meters away from the camera. further away it gets a little blurry. The colors are a bit subdued, but taking pictures is good. There are a few pixels when the object the camera is focusing on is moving quickly, but it tends to clear up quickly.

However, there is still a curvature around the edges of the video. I'm not sure why Ring didn't think it was important to fix this since other video doorbells like the Arlo have no problem with the fishbowl. The field of vision is also somewhat narrow vertically, so you cannot see the floor of the porch at the door where parcels can be placed by a delivery person.

Ring video doorbell 3 live video on app

The night vision is in black and white, which is not unusual for a wireless video doorbell. However, if you hard-wire the Ring Video doorbell 3, the video is colored. So you should take this into account.

Like its predecessor, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 does not have a local video memory. You must subscribe to Ring Protect. It starts at $ 3 a month or $ 30 a year for storing videos and photos. So it's not too expensive. Other video doorbell brands offer storage plans similar to Ring Protect for about the same cost, but August, for example, offers its users free video storage.

Clear audio is always a good thing, especially when there are strangers at the door.

The two-way audio of the Ring Video Doorbell 3 is really nice and clear. This is probably due to the noise cancellation technology. It is said to raise voices from outside noise and does a good job. Clear audio is always a good thing, especially when there are strangers at the door.

properties

Ring video doorbell 3 app

There is a new function which is an upgrade of the Ring Video doorbell 2. With the near zone function you can adjust how close or far the motion sensor detects motion. This prevents your notifications from being triggered all the time, for example if you have a sidewalk or a street near your front door. You can adjust the range from 5 to 15 feet to your needs.

It doesn't have box detection like some other video doorbells, including the Nest Hello.

The snooze and sensitivity functions also help reduce the number of warnings. The app lets you set notifications to sleep for 30 minutes to four hours. You can also reduce the sensitivity of the motion detector so that a notification is only sent when something big like a human is hanging around. Or you can simply set it to people-only mode so that only people are recognized. It doesn't have box detection like some other video doorbells, including the Nest Hello.

If you have no more notifications, you can activate Home mode even better. This function prevents the doorbell from detecting any movement at all. Note, however, that this mode also disables the live view feature.

Like the second generation device, this new one can be connected to Alexa. This way, you can see visitors on Alexa video devices like the Echo Show 8. You can also use any Alexa Echo device to speak to visitors who come to your door. An upgrade that would have made sense is adding Google Assistant features. However, this is unlikely.

Ring neighborhood warnings

In my opinion, the app is the best function of all ring video doorbells. It has so many features and so few glitches that it's a pleasure to use compared to other smart device apps. My favorite feature is the real-time crime and security alerts. You can also view current crime activity on a map of your neighborhood, weekly security reports, and more in the app. With these tools, you can always know what's going on in your neighborhood, which makes me feel safer.

Battery life

Ring the video doorbell 3 on the solar chargerring

Ring does not state exactly what the battery life is. However, I've found that you are more likely to charge it about every 3 months, depending on how often you use it. It seems to consume just over 1% of the battery life per day. If you don't like this idea, you can purchase a solar charger that is installed just behind the doorbell for $ 50. The solar connection is a new option that the second generation ring did not have.

privacy

The Ring Video doorbell 3 contains three remarkable data protection functions. After Ring was asked to hack several of his video cameras, he made two-factor authentication mandatory for his app and website. This is a great way to make sure your footage stays safe, and a feature that many smart devices overlook. Another smart privacy feature is the ability to turn off the camera's microphone if you don't want it to be recorded.

Ring Video Doorbell 3 privacy option

You can also prevent the camera from "seeing" certain parts of your garden by setting up data protection zones in the app. Wherever you set up a data protection zone, this area of your garden is shown as a black box in the video.

Our opinion

While we love Ring Video Doorbells for its ease of use and great app, the third generation seems to be missing something – especially when you look at what else there is. While it's a great doorbell, it doesn't have any significant advantages over the Ring Video doorbell 2. If you already have a doorbell 2 and are thinking about upgrading, you might as well stick to what you have. Otherwise, the Arlo video doorbell is a better upgrade.

Is there a better option?

Yes. At $ 200, it's slightly more expensive than most other high-quality video doorbells on the market, such as Arlos' video doorbell ($ 149) with better video. Perhaps the only thing worth the extra cost would be that the ring app is the best, but if you go that route, you can also buy the ring bell 3 Plus for $ 230. The Plus has an additional feature called Pre-Roll that allows you to view an additional four seconds of video before a motion event is recognized by the doorbell.

How long it will take?

The ring video doorbell is made of thin plastic that doesn't last longer than a year or two. However, it is rainproof and the battery lasts at temperatures between -20 and 50 degrees Celsius. It also comes with a one-year limited warranty, and Ring will replace it for free if it is stolen.

Should you buy it

No. If you want a better ring experience, I would say spring for the 3 Plus ring doorbell. If you are on a budget, you can get the new bell (2020) for $ 100 less. If the ring app and ecosystem don't affect you, choose the Arlo video doorbell.

PlayStation DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment Review: An Awesome Upgrade

DualShock4 Back Button Attachment

Dualshock 4 back button attachment

"The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is the perfect way to better adapt the controller."

  • Robust buttons

  • Easy programming of different inputs

  • Multiple profile slots

  • inexpensive

  • Ergonomic design

  • A bit bulky

  • A bit difficult to attach

Sony's famous dualshock controls have remained relatively unchanged over the years. It is a testament to the original design. However, some require more from a controller, including additional buttons. This has driven serious gamers to third-party controllers that offer more options.

Now there is finally an official option. With the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment from Sony you can crush two additional buttons. Even better? You don't have to get used to a completely new controller to use it, as it connects to your existing DualShock 4.

Ready, done, play

Setting up the Back Button Attachment on the DualShock 4 controller only takes a few seconds. Well, if you don't have to mess around with it like me. A standard headphone plug and a charging connector are located on a swiveling part on the inside and snap into place on the underside of the DualShock 4. In my experience, it is difficult to attach this pivoting part, but it fits snugly along the back of the controller when positioned correctly.

To activate the new buttons, press and hold the large middle button for one second. The attachment screen provides options. You can scroll through the available functions for the two buttons and then click the middle button again to confirm your decision.

Setting up the Back Button Attachment on the DualShock 4 controller only takes a few seconds.

This process is even faster than inserting the back button attachment, and the middle screen turns off almost immediately to prevent it from consuming too much power. Given the miserable battery life of the DualShock 4, that's a good thing.

The back button attachment does not rely on an external app tied to your phone, console, or other device. The buttons may be easier to program when an app is available, but this approach has its own advantage. You can easily use the DualShock 4 with the attachment on another console. There is no additional setup.

The buttons feel great and have been designed to be clear and ergonomic. You press the two buttons on the curved edges, which are exactly where your fingers naturally want to rest on the back of the standard DualShock 4. They are easy to click, although the curved area is the only way to activate them. If your fingers slip, you need to mix them back in place.

Second nature

DualShock4 Back Button Attachment

With the option to reassign the buttons, games feel more natural. I tested the back button attachment extensively with Remnant: From the Ashes, a soul-like game with a focus on third-party shooting. By assigning the two new buttons to the square and X buttons on the DualShock 4, I was able to reload and dodge attacks without losing control of the camera, making intense battles against multiple opponents easier to deal with.

The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment contains a passage for 3.5 mm headsets. If you need to remove the attachment, you can remove it in a few moments and the memory will not be reset.

If there are rumors about the controller design of the PlayStation 5, back buttons might be available by default. In this case, it is possible that the Back Button Attachment makes DualShock 4 controllers compatible. Even if it isn't, the $ 30 price is an excellent addition to the DualShock 4.

A (big) little problem

Since the back button attachment is an accessory, it is bulkier than the paddles built into something like the Xbox Elite Controller or Scuf Vantage. The extra size can tire your hands after a few hours.

The trouble I was having prevented me from taking it off when this happened, but I still did it occasionally to give my hands a break.

The majority have advantages. The back button attachment feels very robust, as I am used to from PlayStation products. Although it feels big on the controller, it's still small enough to easily stow away when traveling or to attach to your controller when you put it away.

Our opinion

The DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment turns your controller into a customizable gamepad for just $ 30. It is an excellent choice for competitive multiplayer fans. If you can experiment with different configurations in no time, you will find your ideal setup in a matter of seconds.

Is there a better alternative?

No, not near that price. Third-party controls designed for using back buttons offer a better experience. However, you spend over $ 100 on most of these controllers.

How long it will take?

It runs on the DualShock 4's battery so you don't have to charge it separately, and it feels sturdy enough to last for years.

Should you buy it

Yes, especially if you are interested in action or competitive multiplayer games.
