Watch Dogs: Legion Review: The Reasons To Skip It Is Legion

"As Ubisoft presents its best open world yet, the main gameplay hook falls flat."

  • Fantastic open world

  • Pleasant fight

  • Fun new traversal options

  • Recruitment hook does not work

  • The story is a tonal mess

  • Too easy, even in the most difficult case

  • The PC version crashed frequently

Ubisoft wants its core gameplay hook, the ability to recruit anyone in the open world, which is what makes you want to play Watch Dogs: Legion. Unfortunately, the mechanic's reception is quickly exhausted. The more time I spent with the game, the less impressive it got and the rough edges of the system became clear.

The real reason you stick with Watch Dogs: Legion is because London is incredibly vibrant, one of the best open worlds I've explored in a video game. But buyers watch out. The PC version of the title is littered with issues, so the console is the preferred choice.

That's a story

Watch Dogs: Legion begins attacks on key London landmarks tied to the hacking group DeadSec. This forces the city government to turn control over to a private military company called Albion. As the game progresses, the player will uncover the secret behind Zero Day, the real perpetrators of the bombings and how the vicious factions of London bond with them.

Guard dogs Albion

Watch Dogs has always passed the edges of reality with its surveillance commentary, but Legion delves into the depths by adding a healthy pile of suppressive policing. The final game in the franchise, Watch Dogs 2, was released around the time of the last US presidential election, an event that changed not only my personal politics but the state of the world almost daily. As you know, 2020 was a long year.

I was hoping Legion would find something interesting, but subjects that should be tackled with a scalpel are tackled with a sledgehammer instead. The game has no tact and is never subtle, but insists on getting around hot button issues with the light-hearted nature that made Watch Dogs 2 popular. It doesn't work.

Watch Dogs Legion Mary Kelley

As Bagley, the A.I. Companion who accompanies your employees on missions, jokes, you are forced to take photos of corpses found in the middle of a sports stadium that has been converted into a concentration camp. In one mission, you have to navigate a spider robot through a mansion only to find refugees who are kept as slaves. If anyone asks for release, they will instead be executed in front of the other prisoners.

Yes. It's getting dark. However, the game never acknowledges the dire situations it represents, which has troubled me about the entire state of game history. Legion wants to get serious, but she also wants to be silly and feel relevant. The game cannot solidify these ideas into a reasonable story or even a theme.

A mechanic's recruit misses the mark

Legion lets you go to any London civilian and recruit them as part of DeadSec. The idea initially feels new but cannot justify its existence, and the lack of a main character becomes a problem as the game progresses.

After playing the prologue mission, which starts with a preset agent, there are 15 different randomly generated characters to choose from. They are given their name, profession, a single sentence about their background and the tool or skill they come up with. My choice fell on Marcel, a mechanic with a wrench that dealt additional melee damage.

From the jump you can approach (almost) anyone on the street and recruit them for the cause. I say almost everyone, because around 75% of civilians actually had the “start recruiting” popup over their heads at some point. I'm not sure if this was a bug or if the game only allows you to recruit a certain number of characters at a time. Still, there are enough people that I didn't believe Ubisoft falsely promoted the mechanic.

Watch Dogs Legion recruitment

You can verify recruits by examining the same information that was displayed during the initial recruiting post prologue: name, occupation, background, and skills. Depending on their feelings about DeadSec, you will have to complete a side quest of varying difficulty in order for them to join. As soon as this is the case, you can switch between employees at any time.

The campaign sometimes assigns you to recruit a specific employee for a mission. For example, you need a construction worker to gain undetected access to a construction site. The game also marks the card with recruits who bring more unique skills to the table.

The majority of employees play the same game.

While character swapping is new at first, you'll quickly find that it's too shallow. London's civilians are randomized, but the variety seems limited. I have often met people with the same haircut or beard as the character I played. I even met a recruit who had the same face as Marcel, but with a darker skin tone. The random visual and vocal matches mean characters don't always have meaningful voices.

Worse, the majority of employees play the same game. There are a few exceptions. My spy character had a handful more combat animations than the rest of my crew and the ability to spawn an Aston Martin car with missiles and camouflage. Mostly. However, I could have swapped one of my recruits for another and it wouldn't have made much difference.

My construction worker could call in a cargo drone to climb on top of the city and fly through it, but there were enough of them soaring through the sky as they are. I also gave a belly laugh when a staff member – an elderly woman – performed a flying spin kick to incapacitate a heavily armored Albion guard.

Watch Dogs Legion Team

The more hacking and combat upgrades unlocked for your crew, the smaller the differences between your recruits will become. It's hard to imagine that the game would play any differently if it only had a single protagonist.

I could have swapped any of my recruits for a different one and it wouldn't make any difference.

However, one main character or several protagonists would have served the story much better. We could have connected with them in ways impossible with the casual recruits, and a message beyond "fascism is bad" could have been gleaned from history.

The game tries to anchor you with its supporting characters, including the often amusing A.I. Bagley, however, they're a poor substitute for a consistent main character.

London is the real star

I'm disappointed with Legion's story and the surprisingly thin operational mechanic. Neither is noticeable. However, if all you want to do is jump into a Ubisoft-style sandbox, Watch Dogs: Legion is the company's best accomplishment yet.

Legion's London version is a joy to discover, especially for someone (like me!) Who grew up in England. You can meet other employees you recruited during the exploration and select members of the public will be highlighted if they are in any way related to a recruit. Although by and large I am lukewarm to recruiting someone, I do appreciate that touch.

If you just want to jump into a Ubisoft sandbox, Watch Dogs: Legion is the company's best accomplishment yet.

With ray tracing on, the reflections in puddles or on the side of a double decker bus gave the world a texture I'd never seen in a game. It's dirty, shiny, and cozy at times, depending on which part of the city you are in.

Watch Dogs Legion Multipalyer

The cargo drones that you can use to fly around the city add a new level of verticality to the game and offer new ways to enter a restricted area. This is a welcome addition as entering restricted areas accounts for 90% of Watch Dogs gameplay. That said, using a cargo drone was sometimes like playing the game in easy mode, as the server or other target I needed to access was often on a rooftop.

The game is played by the feeble-minded enemy A.I. The city is littered with Albion drones and guards, and yet I was able to create a lot of chaos without looking out of the fluff. And when they caught me in the act? Ducking around a corner or two quickly turned her awareness display from assault red to confused white, and within 30 seconds the chatter of giving up chase would get through on the radio with little effort on my part.

Hard mode doesn't make them smarter, just more deadly. There's also a permadeath mode in which an employee who dies is gone for good. With all that said, the game never felt challenging.

PC performance is an issue

My ability to enjoy Legion has also been impacted by significant PC performance issues. I tested the game on my new LG CX OLED TV. The game ran in 4K at high settings and activated ray tracing at a desired speed of 60 frames per second (fps). However, it would inevitably crash, be it a few minutes after the game started or half an hour. A Ubisoft representative told me to make sure I had the latest GeForce drivers and check the game's technical requirements.

I actually had the latest drivers installed which I reinstalled for security reasons. While I didn't have the Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card that asked what settings I wanted to run it at, even the most demanding games I played before Watch Dogs: Legion ran without any problems at even higher settings and higher frame rates. Plus, the problem wasn't a bad average frame rate. I would enjoy a steady 60 fps and then the game would crash and force me to restart.

I eventually reduced the resolution to 1800p which seemed to help, but this is not normal behavior for a game. Worst of all, I ran the game with its patch from day one. A console hotfix will be released on October 30th, while a more robust second patch for Squash performance issues will be released on November 9th. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Our opinion

Watch Dogs: Legion is Ubisoft's most ambitious entry in the series to date, and while it doesn't disappoint like the first Watch Dogs, it feels aimless. Exploring London is a good time, but the game is never challenging and the story makes very little sense.

Is there a better alternative?

Yes. Watch Dogs 2 is still the best the series has to offer. If you're looking for a newer game, you might be waiting for Assassin's Creed Valhalla to be released about a week after Watch Dogs: Legion launched.

How long it will take?

As with any Ubisoft open world game, you have a lot of side quests to complete. With goals associated with recruiting new members, this is taken one step further. The campaign lasts around 20 hours, but if you stick to the main story.

Should you buy it?

Legion's recruiting hook doesn't produce any results, and performance issues make this a leap for PC gamers.

Apple Watch Series 6 Review: The Best Feature-Rich Watch

Apple Watch Series 6 review case

"The Apple Watch Series 6 is the most complete smartwatch package you can buy. If you want to get the most out of all of Apple's wearable offerings, this is it."

  • Comprehensive health and activity tracking

  • Reliable software

  • Always on the screen ensures visual appeal

  • New colors in blue, red and gold look great

  • The Apple S2 chip is a powerhouse

  • ECG and SpO2 measurements can only be used to a limited extent in practice

In my opening paragraphs on the Apple Watch SE review, I asked how Apple could improve on the already excellent Apple Watch formula and the answer was to cut the price where the Apple Watch SE is successful. Now the question is, where is the Apple Watch Series 6 for more than $ 389? How does it get you into buying the SE or upgrading from a previous generation model?

Interestingly, it does this in a typically watch-like fashion while making sure that the nerd among us also gets new technology.

design

Apple hasn't changed the look of the Apple Watch Series 6 from the Series 5, but it did what many watchmakers do when they come across a popular design: they change the colors and introduce a special edition. You can buy the aluminum Apple Watch Series 6 with a blue case, a new gold case, or a special (PRODUCT) RED finish that compliments the existing silver and room gray models. Along with the new case, there are two new strap designs, the Solo Loop and the Braided Solo Loop, as well as new colors for many of the existing straps. (The straps are of course backwards compatible with earlier models.)

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

You can see the blue version in our photos and it is very pretty. It's dark blue, so it contrasts well with other colors. It's not as flashy as the happy (PRODUCT) RED version. Combine it with the right bracelet and you have a modern, sporty watch that is more interesting to look at than the space gray or silver versions. It's the 44mm version on my wrist, and a 40mm version is also available for smaller wrists. The size and weight are virtually the same as the Series 5, except for a tiny, imperceptible reduction in depth.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I choose the Sport Loop in Deep Navy (because it contains a reference to the Tag Heuer Formula 1 Gulf Special Edition), which is made of a soft nylon fabric and secured with a Velcro system and is immensely comfortable. The gently curved ceramic and sapphire caseback adds to this comfort, and the smoothed screen and sides ensure that it slips happily under your sleeves. I've been wearing the Apple Watch SE and now the Series 6 for two weeks and never once felt the need to take it off because it is hot, scratchy, sweaty or generally annoying.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The cheapest Series 6 is made from 100% recycled aluminum. However, you can spend more to purchase a stainless steel model or a titanium “watch edition”. So should you These materials are more durable to some extent, but both are heavier than the aluminum model, and few will tell the difference between the three materials if not informed. Much of the usefulness of the Apple Watch Series 6 is that it can be worn all day. As you add weight it may be less likely to do so. So think twice if you want to spend more.

Always in the display

The screen introduced in the Series 5 is the feature most are using to consider the reason to spend more and get the Apple Watch Series 6 instead of the Apple Watch SE. Instead of the screen going dark as you fall asleep after not having used it for a minute or two, the watch face subtly changes design and dims so that the time remains visible. Aside from enhanced utility, the Apple Watch makes your wrist look more interesting.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I like the way the watch faces change. It's not a sudden change, but a slow animated change between the main dial and its surrounding alternative. On some faces, like the new GMT face, the change is almost imperceptible, while on others like the new artist face, the change is significant as the color is completely derived from the screen. The Series 6 screen is sharp and detailed, and also brighter than the Series 5 screen, and I never had to change the brightness to see it outside.

The permanently visible screen is really all about the graphics, because as life with the SE has shown, the gesture to wake up the Apple Watch is so immediate and reliable that the time is always there when you need it. Keeping something on screen all the time changes the way the Apple Watch looks on your wrist from soulless technology to something with life and movement. Apple's diverse collection of watch faces is also highly customizable, adding another element of personalization beyond the bracelet and case color choices.

The always-on screen is one reason to buy the Apple Watch Series 6 through the Apple Watch SE. However, it is fashion, not utility.

SpO2 monitoring

"Blood oxygen app measurements are not intended for medical use." Not my words, but the words from Apple that were taken from the explanation page for using the Apple Watch Series 6's blood oxygen measurement (SpO2) tool.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Medically, pulse oximetry checks that there is enough oxygen in the blood and is important for people who have had a heart attack, lung disease, asthma, or other breathing problems. Because of this, SpO2 helps identify serious complications from COVID-19. However, when using a medical pulse oximeter in place of a consumer product like the Apple Watch. In this article on the benefits of owning such a device at home, Dr. Denyse Lutchmansingh of Yale School of Medicine: "Unless a patient has real lung disease, there is no need to monitor pulse oximetry."

What good is it if it's not intended for medical use? Based on the fact that outside of a medical setting, some data are better than no data, blood oxygen levels can initially help identify sleep problems such as snoring and sleep apnea, generate recommendations for post-exercise recovery time, or assess altitude acclimatization in hikers or hikers .

Reading on Apple Watch Series 6 takes 15 seconds and requires nothing more than tapping the Start button in the associated app. It can also be set up to take regular measurements and notify you when a drastic change is detected. Seen in this way, the SpO2 measurement of the Apple Watch is another tool in its already well-equipped medical bag.

If you remember, it makes sense to think of SpO2 monitoring as a silent feature, rather than a feature that you use every day or record the readings regularly. Along with other health characteristics, it gradually creates a picture of your general condition, monitors trends, and can quickly let you know if things change dramatically.

Take an EKG

You can take an electrocardiogram (ECG) with the Apple Watch Series 6, just as you can with the Series 4 and Series 5. This feature is primarily used to provide data to your doctor and does not detect a heart attack, blood clot, stroke, or other heart-related disease . Not my words, but Apple's words on their support page for the EKG feature. Do you see a pattern here?

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

However, the EKG is more useful than measuring blood oxygen. It's approved for use in the US and the UK (apparently only for people over the age of 22), and Apple states that it will provide readings similar to the EKG machines your doctor prescribes. So, if you've been diagnosed with problems that may affect your heart, Apple Watch can help. Again, it can be helpful as an early warning system when used with other Apple Watch integrity functions. However, reports can be found questioning the validity of warnings emanating from the watch.

It takes 30 seconds to perform the ECG. You need to sit and rest in a certain way and touch the digital crown throughout the exposure. The results are displayed immediately and can be saved for further examination by your doctor. It worked consistently for me, just like the blood oxygen measurements, and the app is both clear and attractively animated.

The EKG is another nice to have feature that can be of real use in extreme medical emergencies. For most people, and for most of the time, you won't realize it's there. Neither it nor the SpO2 readings are reasons to buy the Apple Watch Series 6, but knowing they are there is somewhat comforting.

Fitness and health monitoring

In my Apple Watch SE test, I went into more detail about the Apple Watch's training plans, the hand washing function, and sleep tracking. Since all of this applies to the Apple Watch Series 6, take a moment to read the sections on these aspects in this review as my experience here was identical.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Apple Watch is a great tracker for everyday activities. The activity ring system is clear and motivating for people who want to increase their daily activity and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The data provided in the Apple Health app is clear and simple. It is not for the serious athlete concerned with running cadence, interval training, or high-precision remote-rate heart rate monitoring.

This approach is reflected in the sleep tracking feature introduced in watchOS 7. The data that is made available all night after wearing the Apple Watch is actually only permanent and does not contain any information on sleep phases, interruptions or quality. It's just another piece of the health puzzle that Apple Health uses to keep you in the loop instead of bombarding you with detailed data.

Battery and performance

Keeping the screen on all the time does affect battery life, but it might not be as severe as you fear. The Series 6 can be used for a day and a half on a single charge. This includes all health monitoring functions, e.g. B. active SpO2 monitoring and overnight sleep monitoring. It lasts until the afternoon of the second day. At this point, it is recommended to switch to power saving mode to last several hours, but with limited functionality.

Adding an hour of fitness tracking (without GPS) drains the battery about 10% more, which seems to cut average usage time by about an hour. If you use GPS – the Apple Watch Series 6 has its own GPS so you can use it without your phone – it is likely to have a significant impact on battery life. Turn off the clock overnight and two full working days are possible.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Charging the Apple Watch when you want to track sleep becomes an issue. It takes about 80 minutes to fully charge from zero. This is a sizable chunk of the time to determine if you're not putting it on the charger overnight. Incidentally, the Apple Watch does not come with a charging stone, just the USB cable with a magnetic charging base.

The Apple Watch Series 6 features Apple's new S6 processor and promises a performance improvement over the Series 5 and Apple Watch SE, which use the older S5 processor. The speed of the Series 6 is obvious. Navigating watchOS 7 seems to be 1.5x because everything is so snappy. It's the little things that get you noticed. It's faster to tell when you're washing your hands than the SE, which usually has the timer on the screen between 10-15 seconds after your 20-second wash, but the Series 6 is 10 seconds and less The watch face gives you instant access to your data without any lag in the lightning-fast animations.

These aspects really only show up in comparison, but those who upgrade from a much older Apple Watch will really notice. If you get to the Series 6 from Series 4 or even earlier, you'll think Apple has strapped a big turbo to the side of the processor that feels so fast.

Life with the Apple Watch Series 6

Daily life with the Apple Watch Series 6 is not that different from life with the Series 5, except for the slight increase in speed that you will notice at first. It's practically the same as living with the Apple Watch SE except for the always-on screen. The Series 6 offers the same helpful functions as Apple Pay support, comprehensive music control, the walkie-talkie function, reminders to get up every hour, the relaxation exercise to breathe, Apple Maps and Siri.

You can buy a Series 6 with cellular connectivity if you want to use data services without having to carry your phone around. However, this will cost you extra each month. Without this feature, Apple Watch will continue to process calls as long as it's connected to your phone, and the speaker will be surprisingly loud too. However, callers don't always hear you well when you're outside. The notifications it receives are clear and concise, and almost all of them can be interacted with in some way.

Since wearing and using the Series 6 every day is so similar to the Apple Watch SE, check out my review of this watch I wore before the Series 6 for more information on how it looks for general use.

Price and availability

The aluminum Apple Watch Series 6 with a sports loop, solo loop, or sports band costs $ 399 for the 40mm model or $ 429 for the 44mm model. When you add cellular connectivity, it costs $ 499 and $ 529, respectively. If you want the solo braided loop strap, you need to add $ 50 to these two prices. Stainless steel Series 6 models start at $ 699, titanium models start at $ 849, and Hermés models start at $ 1,249.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

In the UK, a 40mm aluminum series is £ 6,379 or £ 479 with cellular connectivity while the 44mm model is £ 409 without or £ 479 with cellular. Stainless steel models start at 649 pounds, titanium models from 799 pounds, and the Hermés models from 1,199 pounds.

All are available through Apple's own online shop. Most of the models can be purchased through Amazon and other retailers, while wireless carriers also offer the cellular models.

Our opinion

The Series 6 is Apple's most complete smartwatch to date. While there are some features that you probably won't be using that often, this is the ultimate smartwatch package for your wrist. What if you own an Apple Watch Series 5? There's no really compelling reason to upgrade unless you absolutely have to have the blue, red, or new gold case. It's probably better to see what Series 7 brings next year.

If you've only ever used a Wear OS smartwatch, especially one connected to an iPhone, the Apple Watch will surprise you with its performance, reliability, and capability. If you've never used a smartwatch connected to an iPhone and are tempted, the Apple Watch is the only way to go.

Is there a better alternative?

No. Apple Watch Series 6 is the best smartwatch you can buy. However, ask yourself beforehand if you will ever need EKG or SpO2 readings and if the always-on screen is essential. If the answer to any of these questions is no, take a look at the Apple Watch SE as it is also great and will save you some money.

The only realistic competitor if you don't have an iPhone and don't plan on buying one is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, which outperforms smartwatches with Google's Wear OS software with its better usability and nifty control system. Samsung also offers two sizes, and the Galaxy Watch 3 has both an EKG and SpO2 meter.

How long it will take?

At least three years. The old Apple Watch Series 3 got the latest watchOS 7 software to give you an idea of how long the Series 6 will be supported, for example. The Series 6 is the better buy over the SE when it comes to longevity as it already has all of the top features. The aluminum case isn't particularly sturdy, but if handled well it won't be easily damaged, while the Apple Watch Series 6 is water-resistant to 50 meters and also swim-proof.

Should you buy one?

Yes, it's the best, most feature-packed Apple Watch out there this year and the best smartwatch you can buy if you own an iPhone.

How to Watch ULA Launch Its Delta IV Heavy Rocket

UPDATE: Tuesday night's launch was canceled after poor weather conditions affected pre-launch preparations. The start is now expected to take place at 11:54 p.m. ET on Wednesday September 30th.

The United Launch Alliance (ULA) will have another bang at the launch of their Delta IV Heavy rocket for the NROL44 mission late Wednesday, September 30th.

The space transport company's offer to use a spy satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) was thwarted twice in August and several times in the past few days due to technical problems and weather conditions.

When the MST roll began, we discovered a hydraulic leak in the floor system that is required to move the tower and needs further evaluation. The subsequent weather prevents the team from continuing today's attempt. The launch is now scheduled for Wednesday, September 30th, 11:54 p.m. EDT.

– ULA (@ulalaunch) September 29, 2020

The powerful Delta IV Heavy rocket has three booster cores for additional thrust so that the satellite can be brought into a higher orbit. It is the largest rocket in the ULA fleet and the second most powerful rocket in service today after SpaceX's Falcon Heavy. The most powerful rocket ever flown was the Saturn V – the launch vehicle for crewed missions to the moon five decades ago. Plans for other superheavy rockets include NASA's SLS system, SpaceX's spaceship, and Blue Origin's New Glenn.

The upcoming launch is the 141st mission for the ULA and the 29th for the NGO. It is also the 385th Delta launch since 1960, the 12th Delta IV Heavy launch, and the 8th Heavy for the NRO. The Delta rocket family has proven itself over the years and currently has a near-perfect success rate.

How to watch

Colorado-based ULA plans to launch its Delta IV Heavy on Wednesday, September 30th at 11:54 p.m. ET.

You can follow the event on ULA's YouTube channel.

Current information on the launch status can be found in the ULA feeds on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Apple Watch SE Review: The Best Apple Watch for Most People

Apple watch se review case

"The Apple Watch SE foregoes some of the more noticeable features of the Series 6, but retains almost all important functions with the same design at a lower price."

  • Stylistic look

  • Very customizable

  • Comprehensive health surveillance

  • Responsive, fluid performance

  • Reliable, user-friendly software

How exactly do you make the Apple Watch better? It's already a feature-rich, well-made, easy-to-use wearable to buy as a smartwatch if you have an iPhone. The answer is, they're making it cheaper, and that's exactly what Apple did with the Apple Watch SE. A price cut comes with a reduction in functionality, of course, but how much does this affect the SE and should it put you off?

The answer is no, it definitely shouldn't put you off. In fact, it will be the Apple Watch model that is slated to be purchased this year.

design

The Apple Watch SE looks exactly like the Apple Watch Series 5 and Series 6. It has a 1.78-inch retina screen under Ion-X reinforced glass with a density of 326 pixels per inch. The digital crown is on the side with a single button underneath. The aluminum housing is available in sizes 44 mm (shown in our photos) or 40 mm and can be made in silver, space gray or gold. If you like the look of the Series 5 or 6, you will like the SE.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I picked a gold version that is paired with the Charcoal Sport Loop band and as you'd expect everything is beautifully done and presented, right down to the packaging that it arrives in. The SE is only available in aluminum with the posher. more expensive and slightly more durable surfaces made of titanium and stainless steel, which are reserved for the 6 series. The gold is less on your face than the renders on Apple's website suggest, and it's a more brassy tone than I expected. It works very well with the blue and gray accents of the carbon ribbon. Since the screen is usually black, the overall picture is more noble than the silver model and more interesting than the room gray version.

The screen is often black because the SE doesn't have the always-on screen feature of the Series 5 and 6 and only shows the time you raise your wrist or tap the screen. If the last Apple Watch you used was Series 3 or 4, this is nothing new. After using the Series 5 last year, I miss it on the SE, but the wake up gesture is so accurate and immediate that figuring out what time it is is never difficult.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The 44 mm Apple Watch SE is light at 36 grams and the Sport Loop bracelet adds practically nothing to it, so it is comfortable to wear not only during the day but also at night. The SE supports WatchOS 7's sleep tracking feature, so if you want to wear it while you sleep, this is a good combination. Replacing the belts only takes a few moments. So if you need a metal band during the day and want to keep the sports loop or other band for the night, you can do it without a fuss.

Learn about the square shape of the Apple Watch. When you put on the Apple Watch SE or an Apple Watch, you will immediately notice how little it affects clothing and movement. The digital crown is never in your wrist, and the tabs on the strap have only a slight overhang so they don't get caught on the sleeve of your shirt. The lack of sharp or sharp edges combined with the smooth ceramic and sapphire caseback means you will never feel it on your wrist regardless of your movement. Round smartwatches that mimic traditional watch designs are rarely as convenient.

The shape of the Apple Watch may be controversial to some, but it makes a great smartwatch that can be worn all the time. It's by far the least intrusive watch-like wearable out there, and that wearing and forgetting is essential if you want to get the most of it. You will often forget that you are wearing the Apple Watch until a haptic tip reminds you.

Wash your damn hands

While it's technically a WatchOS 7 feature, the automatic hand wash timer is one of the many health and fitness monitoring features on the Apple Watch SE and excellent. The Apple Watch SE is a product of its time. She listens to the tone and waits for the movement in which you wash your hands. She then starts a 20-second timer to make sure you are doing the recommended exertion. It's shockingly effective.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The timer credits you with the time already spent washing and shows a soap countdown before a haptic tip lets you know you're done. It never failed to tell when I was washing. In contrast to the manual hand wash timer from Wear OS, which you have to start yourself, this function is completely input-free. The Apple Health app even has a dedicated section for hand washing data. It's a dream feature for 2020 clean freaks.

Sleep and fitness tracking

Sleep Tracking is another new feature of WatchOS 7. With the right band, Apple Watch SE is comfortable enough to wear while you sleep and automatically detects when you go to sleep. You can also set up a sleep schedule with Wind Down, which will prepare the phone for the night. It will still add helpful shortcuts to the lock screen, such as: B. access to the timer, the alarm or the music. This will reduce the distraction while the watch only shows the time and your alarm until it gets dark while you sleep.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The sleep data shown is not very comprehensive. It lists your bedtime and calculates averages, but does not provide detailed sleep phase metrics. Sleep Tracking is a nice addition to Apple Health and helps to create an overall picture of your lifestyle. However, it does not provide a thorough analysis of sleep patterns. It's intended for occasional use only, and while the impact on the battery is relatively minor, the time between charges increases, which can prove to be more useful.

Workout tracking is excellent. The workout can be started on the watch and there are a variety of specific activities to choose from. Data is collected in the Apple Health app and displayed along with daily activity data. Apple Health doesn't go into the details and instead simplifies goals using the activity ring system. The idea is to close every ring – goals based on exercise (represented as burning calories), exercise, and standing – each day, which is easy to understand and motivating.

The Apple Watch SE is not for marathon runners, hardcore cyclists or anyone else fixated on their VO2 Max. It provides a comprehensive view of daily activities and overall health without getting too nerdy. It shows you if you are burning fewer calories than usual, if you are exercising more than the week before, and how far you need to go to reach a daily goal.

You won't get electrocardiogram (EKG) or blood oxygen (SpO2) monitors on Apple Watch SE, but there is a heart rate sensor on the back that detects irregular rhythms, as well as fall detection and noise monitoring. Apple's mindfulness feature, Breathe, is there, and the watch can be set up to remind you to take a few moments each day to relax. It also reminds you to get up once an hour if you've been sitting for too long. It all adds up to a comprehensive, coherent and complementary package of functions that keep you up to date and motivate you.

All health monitoring functions on the Apple Watch SE work outside of the initial setup with very little input from you, while the data in the app is displayed attractively and clearly. Serious sports enthusiasts may not find the data in sufficient detail and may also benefit from the Series 6 SpO2 monitoring, but for everyone else, the Apple Watch SE is the wearable health monitor they need. Apple's new Fitness + program, which works in conjunction with your Apple Watch SE, will be rolled out later this year and has the potential to make it an even more rounded package.

Use the Apple Watch SE

The health and fitness features make up a large part of the watch's appeal, but what about everything else? Everything you do on the Apple Watch SE is incredibly polished, straightforward, and quick. It has the same dual-core processor as the Series 5, not the updated S6 Series 6 processor, but I didn't even wish the SE had any more power as the response is almost instantaneous, even when running data-intensive applications how to use cards or access to e-mail. The Digital Crown is a joy to use as the feel of it matches the rotation required to move it through the operating system. The button below activates the dock, which can be filled with current apps or a selection of favorites for quick access.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Notifications are handled professionally. Let's use a Twitter notification as an example. If there is an image in it, the watch will display it without waiting for it to appear. You get an extremely tactile haptic alert, you raise your wrist and the message is displayed almost instantly, where it can be viewed, liked and retweeted in its entirety from your wrist. It is great.

Now, take advantage of this experience with Apple's messaging, email, and many other apps, including Microsoft Teams. Usually you can do with most – such as B. Reply, mark, like or delete – interact quickly and easily without reaching for your phone. Then extend that speed and functionality to the vast majority of other installed or third-party apps that you might install yourself. If you choose the cellular model (for $ 50 more upfront plus monthly service charges), you can make and receive calls regardless of your phone. Even if you don't, you can still use the Apple's phone functionality to watch with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The voices are loud and clear and useful when your hands are full.

The watch supports Apple Pay, shows music controls when music is playing on my phone, there are plenty of fun and useful watch faces to choose from, and there is Siri too. You can even create Memoji on the Apple Watch. This process is incredibly quick and smooth given the multitude of choices and animations. This is a very good example of the great fluidity and performance of the Apple Watch SE no matter what you do.

battery

The Apple Watch SE can be used for two days before charging. This will vary based on your use, but for me from 9 a.m., usually with an hour of tracking exercise, then overnight to track sleep, and by day two it was up to 18% less than 6 p.m.

Monitoring your sleep overnight has used up between 15 and 25% of the battery. This variant makes the second full day a hit-or-miss. If you don't bother with sleep tracking and instead charge or turn off the watch overnight, two days of use is no problem at all. Even with an hour of fitness tracking, the SE will last from early morning until after midnight with about 60% of the battery left.

Not that it matters. In order for a smartwatch with Google's Wear operating system to last two days, it takes special modes, a clever second screen, or very careful use. In other words, you can't really rely on it. The Apple Watch SE doesn't require any special attention, and that makes life a lot easier.

Price and availability

The 44mm Apple Watch SE is $ 309 while the 40mm model is $ 279, assuming you choose a Sport Loop, Solo Loop, or Sport Band strap (including the Nike models ). If you want the braided solo loop, pay $ 329 or $ 359 – or buy it later for $ 99. Add cellular connectivity to both models for $ 50 plus a monthly carrier fee.

In the UK, the 44mm Apple Watch SE is £ 299 or £ 349 with cellular connectivity and the 40mm model is £ 269 or £ 319 with cellular connectivity. Adding the solo braided loop increases the cost to £ 349 for the 44mm model and £ 319 for the 40mm model.

Apple Watch SE is available immediately through the online and retail stores of Apple, Amazon, and many other retailers.

Our opinion

The Apple Watch SE is almost flawless and Apple is once again showing everyone else how smartwatches are made. But what about the missing features – are they preventing it from being a must have? Keeping the display on all the time is the most unfortunate omission that can affect everyday use. Knowing that these are series 5 and 6, they are just a little more enticing. The EKG and SpO2 features are more specialized, and those who feel like they're using them regularly enough can justify the extra $ 120 to buy a Series 6. Anyone else won't miss it.

Spending more on a stainless steel, ceramic, or Hermés Apple Watch gives you only boastful rights as they are all technically identical and the SE's performance is excellent on last year's processor. I have no hesitation in recommending the lower-cost, almost fully featured aluminum Apple Watch SE, but will have to wait until I've worn the Series 6 for a while to be sure if the SE is the Apple Watch bought this year shall be . However, at this point in time, it looks like it could be very good.

Is there a better alternative?

Not really. If you own an iPhone and are thinking about buying a smartwatch, then you should get the Apple Watch. However, what about the $ 399 / $ 429 Apple Watch Series 6? Several features are added – including the ECG, SpO2, and the always-on screen – but they look the same. The jump in price is significant if you're not expecting to use the advanced health features. You can also find a Series 5, which may be available at a slightly cheaper price than the Series 6, and enjoy the always-on screen and an EKG.

Smartwatches that use Google WearOS, Samsung Tizen, and Huawei Health can connect to iPhone, but they don't offer the same level of integration with iOS, and you'll miss out on some features, including messaging support. Many cost about the same price as the Apple Watch SE, but the performance and features aren't that good.

The only other alternative you should seriously consider for your iPhone is the $ 299 Withings ScanWatch. It has all the health tracking features from the Series 6 including an EKG and SpO2 measurement, better sleep tracking and a very attractive design. There is less emphasis on the related elements like notifications, but they are there and work well enough.

How long it will take?

Smartwatches don't follow the same upgrade cycle as a smartphone, and the Apple Watch should easily last three or more years if handled well. For example, the aluminum body can be damaged if you are careless. However, the Apple Watch SE is waterproof up to 50 meters. The abundance of replacement belts also helps to extend the service life.

Your own needs will determine whether the additional health-related features of the Series 6 will become more useful in the near future. If you think it might, the increased spending on the Series 6 may prevent you from feeling like you need to update the SE early on. Software support should last at least three years. For example, WatchOS 7, the latest version, is compatible with Apple Watch Series 3 2017.

Should you buy it?

Yes, the Apple Watch SE has almost everything you would expect from a smartwatch.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Review: The Other Smartwatch to Buy

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Review: The (Different) Smartwatch You Should Buy

"The Galaxy Watch 3 is the smartwatch you can buy if you have an Android phone."

  • Stylish, traditional watch look

  • Attractive, reliable software

  • The brilliant rotating bezel supports the control system

  • Comprehensive health monitoring functions

  • Solid battery life

  • Questionable fitness tracking accuracy

  • Slow charging of the battery

If you own an Android phone, which smartwatch should you buy? The answer isn't as obvious as you might think. You can't use the shoe-in option, the iOS-based Apple Watch, which is the undisputed top of our smartwatch recommendation list.

Samsung hopes the new Galaxy Watch 3 can take on the role. After all, it shares many of the appealing aspects of the Apple Watch. It comes in two sizes and has a good design, strong software and a unique control system.

That makes it an easy recommendation for Android phone owners – with one caveat. You have to be happy to spend a pretty large sum to get one, weaknesses and all.

design

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I wore the 45mm Galaxy Watch 3 which has a chronograph style and is a little more masculine than the 41mm model. It also has softer design features for a less sporty look. It weighs 53 grams (0.12 pounds) and is 11 mm (0.43 inches) thick. Due to its overall size, I initially chose the 41mm version as my preferred model, but the larger of the two models has proven to be handy and has established itself as a comfortable companion.

The roundness of the Galaxy Watch 3 makes it less obvious that you're wearing a smartwatch, and I really like that. The 1.4-inch Super AMOLED screen has a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels and is sharp and very colorful. You can choose an always-on screen that, unlike most WearOS watches, doesn't minimize the watch face much. It lowers the brightness and removes all animation like a second hand, but the overall design stays on the screen. This makes it look like a normal watch.

The party piece of the watch is the bezel, which physically rotates to move through the software.

Made of stainless steel, the Galaxy Watch 3 has Gorilla Glass DX above the screen and also looks like a glass showcase. Two buttons are separated by a protective piece on the right side of the housing, with the upper one being used to secure a step in the menu and the lower one being used for the app menu. Long press the top button activates Samsung Pay, and long press the bottom button brings up the Bixby voice assistant. If you look closely at the top button you'll see the words "Galaxy Watch" engraved on it, which is a really nice touch.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The watch's party piece is the bezel as it physically rotates to move through the software rather than having to swipe the screen or play around with a rotating crown.

Not only is this convenient and intuitive, but it also doesn't obstruct your view of the screen when you interact with the software. I really like the neatly dampened rotary motion and the quiet clicks when moving. The software's response is also very quick, so you can turn it one way or another without the clock getting stuck. In reality, you should be using it with care and precision, which shows how high-quality the action feels. If you're not touching the screen, less greasy prints are printed on it, a nice bonus, and the bezel's subtle texture makes it rotate naturally.

My test model has a black leather strap with white stitching that softens shortly after it is put on and is attached to the case with 22mm quick release pins. Switching to almost any other strap is easy, but the Galaxy Watch doesn't offer the same third-party support as the Apple Watch, which means you have to turn to traditional watch accessory manufacturers. That's not a problem, but not as new to newbies as buying custom-made Apple Watch straps.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Like all all-round smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 3 is closely based on a traditional watch design, so you may not be immediately recognized as a “smartwatch wearer” if you don't want to. However, this comes with a certain degree of anonymity.

The uniqueness of the Galaxy Watch 3 is based more on its ease of use than its looks. I appreciate its presence on my wrist, but Samsung still hasn't found a way to make my heart beat faster when I look at it.

software

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Samsung uses its own Tizen software for the Galaxy Watch 3 and not Google's WearOS for Fossil, Mobvoi or Motorola smartwatches. While WearOS is better than it was, it can be frustrating to use. Tizen on the Galaxy Watch is nifty and mature and much closer to WatchOS than WearOS in terms of usability, but still has some weaknesses of its own, including the complete departure from Google Apps.

First the good things. I'll keep going but the rotating bezel is a work of genius. It's simple and cleverly implemented, and it's key to the Galaxy Watch's quality of life. 3. Turn left to view your notifications. Turn right to view fitness data, workouts, weather, shortcut buttons, and more. These widgets can easily be customized so that they remain relevant to you.

To its disadvantage, the Galaxy Watch 3 uses Bixby for voice control and not the Google Assistant.

Samsung does an excellent job of displaying data on the Watch 3's small screen. The text is clear, large, and legible in sunlight. Because the widget array can be personalized, you rarely need to go to the main menu of the app. Find what you want quickly. It's all very pretty too, with lots of pictures and graphics, right down to large profile pictures to be used with WhatsApp messages and bold colors to distinguish modes, icons, and menu options. It's fun and friendly without being cheap and off-putting. I like the choice of watch faces as there are hundreds available on the Galaxy Store if you don't like the pre-installed Samsung watch faces.

The feel is strong and noticeable, but you have to raise your wrist significantly for the notification to appear on the screen, which can be annoying. Notifications allow you to interact with predefined responses or emoji, speech or a small alphanumeric keyboard. The keyboard is a bit fiddly, but voice control is surprisingly accurate when dictating answers.

To its disadvantage, the Galaxy Watch 3 uses Bixby for voice control and not the Google Assistant. Bixby is in no hurry, and even the command "Hey, Bixby" means pausing for several seconds while he decides whether to listen or not. This mostly makes it useless and nowhere near as good as the Google Assistant on a wearable.

The lack of Google Apps is a problem. You will miss Google Maps the most. I find maps on my wrist helpful in areas I am unfamiliar with as I don't have to stare at my phone like a tourist, but the Galaxy Watch 3 has no pre-installed map option at all. The decent Here Maps app is available from the Galaxy Store, but Google Maps isn't. Samsung brings you into your own ecosystem with the Galaxy Watch. For example, you use Samsung Health instead of Google Fit and Samsung Pay instead of Google Pay.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

I used the Galaxy Watch 3 connected to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and it worked fine. It's easy and quick to set up, it connects and reconnects with ease even if you turn the watch off overnight, and it even displays a small haptic reminder when you are out of range of your phone. If you're using another Android phone or iPhone, you'll need to install the Samsung Galaxy Wear app in order to use the watch.

The big thing for me is that Tizen isn't annoying on the Galaxy Watch 3, which WearOS almost always is. After the notifications are sorted out during setup, it just sits back, gets on with its work, and isn't irritating when I have to interact with it. This is part of the success of the Apple Watch, and it's great to see it replicated for Android phone owners.

health and fitness

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Galaxy Watch 3 has all the usual fitness monitoring tools on board as well as a heart rate monitor, sleep tracking, automatic fall detection, VO2 max data and blood oxygen monitoring. Like the rest of the software information, it is displayed in a colorful, easy-to-read manner. It has meaningful reminders to keep you moving, and even little stretch routines that are easy and fun to follow – or shut up if you don't have time.

The automatic workout tracking is a little overzealous, however. It occurred while I was vacuuming and painting a door. The Galaxy Watch 3 will now track your sleep when you wear it overnight. The results were different from my Withings Sleep Analyzer – where the Withings tracked deep sleep, the Watch 3 seemed to classify it as light sleep instead.

The Galaxy Watch 3 covers everything I want in a fitness tracker, but there are some accuracy concerns.

Outside of the basics, it's not particularly informative. Personally, since I don't find wearing a watch very comfortable while I sleep, the dates didn't inspire me to wear it often. Heart rate is not measured at night, so battery life is not significantly affected. About 6% was used during seven hours of rest, which means that the watch is having trouble getting through a second day of heavy use without charging.

The data is synced with the Samsung Health app on your phone. In addition to basic information such as number of steps, calorie consumption and training data, you can also add food and water intake there. There is also a stress measurement tool that is linked to a breathing exercise program. The app is informative and attractive, and it has some basic explanations as to why you want to track features like stress.

The Galaxy Watch 3 covers everything I want in an everyday fitness tracker, but there are some accuracy concerns. I noticed that some of the data points appeared to be on the low side compared to what I normally see, and I wore them next to the Apple Watch for comparison. During a set period of time, there were big differences in the steps taken, with the Apple Watch 940 and Galaxy Watch 3 recording just 380 over an hour of comparison.

Wearing both for a simple workout also made a massive difference in calorie consumption. The Galaxy Watch estimated 283 calories for a 64-minute session, which seemed low with an average heart rate of 133 beats per minute (beats per minute). The Apple Watch delivered an average heart rate of 127 beats per minute for the same session and an active calorie consumption of 471. However, the resting heart rates were identical.

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

While neither may be absolutely correct, the Apple Watch results always match other wearables I've tested. Cause for concern? It's not a medical device, so not really. I'm also using a pre-release version of Galaxy Watch 3, so a software update may arrive before it starts to optimize the data collection algorithms.

Unfortunately, if you need the Galaxy Watch 3 for EKG or blood pressure monitoring, these functions are not yet available. Both must be approved by the local authorities before starting. Although the Food and Drug Administration has now approved the Galaxy Watch 3's EKG feature, it has not yet been enabled in my review model.

battery

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

With moderate use. The battery of the Galaxy Watch 3 lasts two working days if it is switched off overnight with the display active. Introduce GPS, continuous heart rate and stress level tracking, and additional fitness tracking, and that will drop to a little over a day. As I tracked my sleep, the battery dropped from 48% when I went to bed to 42% in the morning.

I find the battery life of the Galaxy Watch 3 acceptable, but certainly not desirable. It improves on many WearOS watches, which often can't make two full days even with light use, but the charging process is very slow. The magnetic puck sticks pretty loosely to the back of the watch 3, and regardless of which charging block I used, the charging time from 5% to 100% was at least two hours and 15 minutes.

I wore the Galaxy Watch 3 next to the Apple Watch for a few days to compare the battery consumption. Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., the Galaxy Watch 3's battery dropped to 66%, while the Apple Watch's battery dropped to 75%. I turned the clocks off at midnight and back on at 9 a.m., then followed an hour's workout, and then continued using it all day. The Galaxy Watch 3 showed 5% at 10 p.m. while the Apple Watch had 10%. When it hit 15% and 5%, the Galaxy Watch 3 suggested turning on a battery saver that only shows the time to extend usage.

Using the Galaxy Watch 3 with other Android phones and the iPhone

The Galaxy Wearable app, which is required to connect the Galaxy Watch 3 to your phone, is available on Google Play and the iOS App Store. I tested it on a Samsung phone, but what is the experience like with a third-party device? I'll be updating this over the next few weeks as I use the Watch 3 with different phones. I will add the results to this story

Price and availability

The Galaxy Watch 3 is $ 399 for the 41mm WiFi model or $ 429 for the 45mm WiFi model. Samsung is also making a 41mm 4G LTE version for $ 449 and a 45mm 4G LTE version for $ 479. Both are compatible with all major US airlines. All Wi-Fi models will be released on August 20th and 4G models in September.

In the UK, the 41mm WiFi model is £ 399 and the 45mm WiFi clock is £ 419. The 4G LTE units cost £ 439 for the 41mm model and £ 459 for the 45mm model.

Our opinion

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 isn't perfect, but it's the best smartwatch you can buy if you own an Android phone. The software is reliable and pretty to look at, the control system is an absolute winner, there is a choice for small and large wrists, and it has extensive health features too.

However, they pay a heavy price. It's twice what you'd spend on some WearOS watches, and since smartwatches are more of a nice addition than an essential one, you really have to be sold for the concept to spend that much. Apart from the Apple Watch, the Galaxy Watch 3 is the only modern smartwatch that I still like to wear after the reporting period. I think that's a strong recommendation.

Is there a better alternative?

The Galaxy Watch 3's biggest rival is the Galaxy Watch Active 2. It's cheaper and has the same software but a touch-based version of the rotating bezel and a less interesting design. It's a good buy if you don't have the budget for the Galaxy Watch 3. If you want WearOS for Google's apps, the Fossil Gen 5 and Moto 360 are good. The Mobvoi TicWatch C2 Plus is still cheaper. Keep in mind that WearOS isn't as sophisticated or as easy to use as Tizen.

If you own an iPhone, there's nothing here to turn you off of the Apple Watch. Even if the experience is good, only the Apple Watch can be integrated with Apple's messaging system and apps. If you have an iPhone, you should still buy the Apple Watch.

How long it will take?

The Galaxy Watch 3 has IP68 water and dust resistance and a toughness rating of MIL-STD-810G, which means it should be suitable for everyday use and in most situations. The design shouldn't age badly. If Samsung continues to support the app, the Galaxy Watch 3 will last as long as you have your current phone.

Should you buy it?

Yes. It's expensive, but if you're connecting to an Android phone, it's worth it.

  • Battery life

  • Build quality

  • Music storage

  • Suitability for everyday use

  • Expensive

  • One size only

  • No touch screen

Whenever a product contains the words "marine" or "boat connection" in the description, I turn away as soon as possible. These words are usually reserved for overpriced niche articles that are flooded with features that I will never use. When I found out that the Garmin Quatix 6 was going to arrive on my doorstep, my first thought was: "I'm not going by boat." How am I supposed to check this? "

Fortunately, the Quatix 6 is not just a boat watch. It could be the best multisport smartwatch you can buy today.

Furnishing and design

While the packaging says Quatix 6, it is essentially a variant of the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro that can do everything the Fenix 6 Pro does. It only has a number of pre-installed boat functions.

Starting with the basics, the Quatix 6 monitors the usual suspects: steps, calories burned, sleep and climbed floors. It also connects to your iPhone or Android device to receive notifications. Such features are expected these days, but the Quatix 6 offers GPS, a heart rate monitor, a barometric altimeter, a compass, a thermometer, an accelerometer, a pulsox, and a gyroscope. What is special about the Quatix 6 is not that it has all these sensors, but what it does with the data.

Garmin's new user interface is certainly an improvement over previous iterations. If there are several complications on the standard screen, I get all the data fields I want without the face feeling cluttered.

I usually make a sacrifice when I select "home screens," but the Quatix 6's various facial options strike a balance between clean aesthetics and the information available at a glance. In the meantime, the widget loop shows a list instead of taking up the entire screen, which enables faster scrolling. These minor changes make the user interface less cumbersome.

Battery life

Another minor change from previous models is the battery format, which is now displayed in days for charging instead of being full in percentage. The battery life depends heavily on your usage mode. Garmin offers the following:

  • Smartwatch mode: Up to 14 days
  • GPS mode: up to 36 hours
  • GPS and music: up to 10 hours
  • Maximum battery GPS mode: 72 hours
  • Expedition GPS activity: 28 days
  • Battery saving mode: 48 days

This type of adjustability for battery usage is helpful when you are out on the water or in the wild.

Activity tracking

Life on the water is the goal of the Quatix 6, and for this reason all possible widgets are pre-installed so that you can switch from landlubber to seal in no time. With full connectivity from all chartplotters to autopilot controls to Garmin's Sailing Assistant, the Quatix 6 is ready to go to meet all of your boat needs.

But as I said, the Quatix 6 is much more than a water dog – it's a multisport pony that improves your fitness game regardless of activity.

In addition to the skills the Fenix 6S Pro demonstrated in a previous wilderness test, the Quatix 6 can guide you through home workouts, including yoga, P.ilates, weight training and cardio, all with on-screen animations to guide you through the process. For the most part, these are extremely practical and I had to mix in various workouts that I would normally not have looked up.

My only criticism are the noises that the watch makes when switching between positions during yoga training. They are shrill electronic beeps that are not wanted when I try to turn on my Zen.

I mainly train indoors these days and the Quatix 6 has a special tracking for indoor cycling. Most of the time I search for my readings at Zwift, but the Quatix 6 can connect directly to my Wahoo Kickr to show my performance and distance without interrupting my Zwift training. This may seem a little unnecessary, but for anyone who has decided which apps to connect to your Strava, this is a nice addition that allows you to keep your data in one place.

If running, swimming or cycling are part of your weekly work, the Quatix 6 with PacePro keeps track of your target pace, offers new bike courses with Cycle Map and monitors your swimming efficiency in the pool. And if you like to play golf, 41,000 golf courses are preinstalled.

To be honest, there are far too many features to mention here. So if you are interested in the full list, you can read it on the website Garmin site.

The Quatix 6 can combine your activities and evaluate them with its numerous functions. With features like a heart rate sensor, GPS and the Pulsox sensor, which estimates the amount of oxygen in your blood, the Quatix 6 can estimate your fitness level.

What I liked most about the Quatix 6 was the stress and body battery functions. In all likelihood, this has more to do with checking this watch during a pandemic. Nevertheless, it was a nice change to pay more attention to my stress and my energy level.

That doesn't mean I needed a watch to say I'm more stressed than usual, but when the Quatix 6 asked if I wanted to do a breathing exercise because he knew I was nervous, I was happy to remember to get offered. This is a small part of the general capabilities of the Quatix 6, but this was a welcome addition for this journalist who struggles to meet deadlines in a world that works a little differently than before.

Additional functions

The onslaught of functionality doesn't stop with breathing exercises and sports. With 32 GB of storage space, the Quatix 6 can record 2,000 songs. Since it is Bluetooth and Wi-Fi compatible, you can stream from Spotify, Amazon Music and more.

Another smart feature is Garmin Pay, which allows you to set up a virtual wallet for contactless payments.

Everything I've mentioned up to that point applies to the Fenix 6 Pro at $ 700. The only difference is that the marine functions automatically included in the Quatix 6 must be downloaded to the Fenix 6 Pro via the Garmin Connect app.

So why buy the Quatix 6 and not the Fenix 6 Pro? Aesthetics matter.

With its silicone band "Captain Blue", the bezel made of brushed stainless steel and a touch of red, the Quatix 6 gives a completely different atmosphere than its all-black tactical brother. I'm usually a fan of the all-black options, but the classy look of the Quatix 6 is a wonderful change from the watches I've had in the past. If you want to stand out even more, the Quatix 6 is available in a titanium version for $ 1,000, which is equipped with a sapphire crystal lens, a titanium bezel and a titanium band, as well as a weight loss from 83 to 72 grams.

Our opinion

You may not know Quatix 6, but you should be. It has the same functionality as the Fenix 6 Pro, with a different look that's as classy on a boat as it is on the trail or in the gym.

Is there a better alternative?

In the north of the $ 500 price range, look for the best smartwatches available on the market, such as the Apple Watch, Suunto 9 Baro, and Polar Vantage V Titan. Much of this choice depends on your personal preferences, price, and willingness to learn how different brands work.

The main blow against the Quatix 6 is the high price that can throw it out of competition for many people. However, if you want to be patient, Garmin watches are often on sale, more than most other brands.

How long it will take?

Garmin watches are built to throw around, and the Quatix 6 is no exception. If previous experience indicates this, you will wear your Quatix 6 for at least three to four years. From this point on, you will notice something shiny and new long before it lets you down or runs out. The watch comes with a one year warranty.

Should you buy it

Yes. If you can afford it, it is arguably the most robust multisport smartwatch currently available.
